Miles is a talented lawyer who expertly guided me through the messy process of divorce. Every step of the way, Miles advocated for my best interests and long-term strategy/outcomes. His communication style with me was responsive and compassionate, while assertive and concise with opposing counsel. I especially appreciated Miles’ ability to explain complex legal concepts and terms to me in a simplified way. He was thoughtful, thorough and knowledgable. Thanks to Miles, my case was settled with terms that well exceeded my expectations. I trust Miles completely. He has earned my respect and highest rating. Highly recommend.

Five years ago, I found myself in the midst of a daunting divorce process. Miles' professionalism, mixed with genuine care, made every conversation a breath of fresh air amidst the stress. He doesn't just work hard for his clients; he becomes a trusted partner. Miles' dedication to his clients' best interests, combined with his practical approach and honesty, make him a standout professional. Not to mention that Miles is an exceptional writer. His memos and emails are concise, professional, and clearly get the point across. He goes above and beyond by informing me of what I am entitled to, which significantly eased every step of the divorce process, knowing that he is there on my side. I cannot recommend him enough. For anyone seeking a compassionate and skilled attorney, Miles is the ideal choice.

Miles is an extremely talented and effective attorney, and I highly recommend hiring Miles if you are in the unfortunate position of needing a family law attorney. Throughout the process, Miles consistently drafted pleadings and/or proposals that aligned with the judge's ultimate decisions and/or recommendations. Miles' written communications to opposing counsel were concise and assertive, and he demonstrated an ability to work with opposing counsel in a way which ultimately benefitted me. During conversations, he was patient and explained difficult concepts in easy to understand terms. Most importantly, Miles didn't miss a single issue when reviewing completely unreasonable and underhanded proposals presented by the other side. He caught subtle drafting omissions which would have had enormous consequences for me if left as is. He was always prepared, knew the details of my case, and did an outstanding job representing me every step of the way.

I have worked with FKKB four the past 11 years on a very messy, protracted divorce case. For the past four years I have worked closely with Miles, specifically on a motion I filed to terminate spousal support due to a drastic depletion in my financial condition. One of the senior partners at FKKB recommended I work with Miles, citing him as “one of the best young attorneys I have ever worked with”. I would have to wholeheartedly concur with that assessment. From day one, Miles has worked tirelessly on my behalf. He is highly detailed, thorough in his approach, and leaves no stone unturned. His plans/strateges to each aspect of my case are well thought out and organized, sticking toi the facts and evidence as they stand, not ever dealing with conjecture. He is a great listener, extremely empathetic, understanding, and always tells me what I need to hear, not what I want to hear. He is direct, straightforward, and always tells me what “the worst case scenario/outcome” would be, and then follows up with the probability of that scenario, to ensure I am fully prepared for what could happen. But he is always “glass is half full” positive with me, if he fully believes my case has the facts on my side, is constantly encouraging, and has done a great job of managing my stress and anxiety throughout this arduous process. I give Miles the highest rating possible, and would recommend him to anyone going through the pain of a divorce.

I would sincerely like to retract my previous review. I apparently had reached out to Analisa Pratt with incorrect contact informations. Because of the review, Analisa reached out to me, and we're now enjoying a very good and thorough professional relationship. I apologise if my less-than-stellar review caused anyone to disregard the other excellent reviews. I also apologize to Analisa if my too-quick response cause any trouble for her. In my book, she works very hard to earn the 5-star review above. Thank you.

Julia is great. My only regret is that I wish I had found her sooner. I had to learn the hard way that there are a lot of bad lawyers out there. Divorce is very stressful, but Julia was able to minimize that stress and help me come to the resolution I was looking for with out destroying any future chances for a successful co-parenting relationship.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Menlo Park, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
