Pros
1
Excellent communication and empathy, helping clients feel supported and understood during difficult times
“What sets him apart from the pack is his high EQ. Right away, he could sense my fear and anxiety about the divorce process (and the prospective cost) and helped calm my nerves by communicating with empathy, understanding, patience, and clarity.”
2
Strong legal expertise and ability to achieve favorable outcomes for clients
“David helped me achieve very ambitious and perhaps unorthodox goals in what can only be called a very high conflict divorce. In less than a year David and I got all terms resolved favorably, with everything, including legal AND physical custody, being split 50/50 and zero support due either party.”
3
Commitment to client-focused, collaborative approach to resolving disputes
“David strongly applauded my original collaborative goals and insisted they were noble and worth fighting for. More importantly, he had a well argued plan of action that promised to negate my wife's aggression before matching it.”
4
Responsive and accessible, keeping clients informed throughout the process
“He doesn't hide a thing and is trustworthy in all his actions. If there is a deadline, Mr. Holcomb manages to stay abreast of these and takes action in a timely manner.”
5
Compassionate and supportive, providing emotional guidance during difficult times
“When you think that your world is falling apart, he is emotionally supportive. At times I thought he was more of a friend than an attorney.”

David was my rock during a very nerve wracking and scary time in my life. He worked extremely hard on my behalf during a complicated, contested divorce. I came to David at my lowest point, as a mother of two young kids who needed a way out of a bad marriage that was quickly getting out of control. I interviewed several lawyers before deciding to go with David. What sets him apart from the pack is his high EQ. Right away, he could sense my fear and anxiety about the divorce process (and the prospective cost) and helped calm my nerves by communicating with empathy, understanding, patience, and clarity. In our initial consultation, he jotted down the divorce process in very simple steps which really helped me with my fears about the complex legal system. His willingness to spend the extra few minutes to educate me on legal terms and processes in simple, easy to understand terms was worth the price of the divorce. He helped me save my house, me and my kids safety, and my sanity. David did not sugar coat or lead me to believe any of this would easy, but he made me feel that I would have a partner so I was not as afraid of the unknown. David always spoke in a calm and reassuring tone (not condescending) that helped me see clearly through the dark clouds. I'll always remember the words he said at the end of our initial consultation "let's get you your divorce," and he did, but he got me so much more--my freedom. I will be forever thankful to him for that.

I worked with David on my lengthy and difficult divorce. Needless to say how emotional and confusing it can be. This was my first need for an attorney, and a good friend highly recommended him. I immediately felt heard in a personal way and confident with the no nonsense communications to my ex. He appears in court as an elegant and completely prepared man, who is in charge. We achieved our desired goals and he supported me in all ways. I highly recommend David as an attorney that you can rely on.

David is a great person and an even better attorney. He has helped me with several legal matters over the years and has gone above and beyond my expectations each time. I am very grateful to have David on my side and would recommend him to anyone seeking legal services.

Mr. Holcomb is one of the most compassionate people I have ever met. Even since out first consultative phone interview, he was and continued to be able to quickly identify ways to enhance the success of my divorce-on my behalf. Divorce is very difficult for the entire family, Mom, and the kids-no matter how old they are-and Mr. Holcomb was very sensitive to the emotions and needs of the persons he represented-me as the mom and my children. He has up-to-date knowledge of the California Divorce Codes and Family Law, and uses this knowledge to really fight for his client. He is very quick to reply to emails and phone calls and ensures that the client is well informed as to each phase of the Divorce. He doesn't hide a thing and is trustworthy in all his actions. If there is a deadline, Mr. Holcomb manages to stay abreast of these and takes action in a timely manner. In relation to costs, there are regular invoices to avoid any last minute surprises. When you think that your world is falling apart, he is emotionally supportive. At times I thought he was more of a friend than an attorney. I highly recommend David Holcomb as your Divorce Attorney.

Mr. Woodlief was outstanding in helping move my case forward. Our eventual settlement was far more than my company ever expected. As a C-level executive, I demand professionalism, grace, tenacity, and creativity. To date, I've not met anyone that embodies all of this and more. His unsurpassed knowledge of the peripheral areas of law that affected our needs was also impressive. We called on him to assist us with debt restructuring and still retain him for other issues. It is be my pleasure to recommend Mr. Woodlief without reservation.

George handled everything from the interview to settlement. Throughout the process, I always felt I was in good hands. At the consultation, George took the time to understand the case, including my priorities and concerns. He tailored his communication to my needs. He was immediately able to walk me through the most likely courses the case would take, and this ended up being accurate. Where we had choices for how to proceed, I was presented with clear alternatives, and it was up to me. Other than that, I let him handle everything. He was always available by email or by phone within 1 day, even when he had other trials going on. The experts he hired to add specialized knowledge were appropriate. With George, I felt protected from the messy and frustrating aspects of this process. I just had to show up, and tell my story, as needed. In documents he prepared, conversations and meetings we had, it was clear that he took the time to understand the details of the case inside and out. It became clear that the other side was not reasonable, and I was glad to have George there to give them a dose of reality. I felt confident that we arrived at an optimal outcome. I am glad I hired George.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Mill Valley, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
