Francine was an absolute professional when working with her to have our retirement planning process trademarked. Over a period of months we communicated via email, telephone conference, and webinars to layout our plan to achieve our goal. Francine was able to guide us through the labyrinth of legal potholes and landmines which allowed us to not only get our process trademarked, but to obtain a registered trademark! There is no doubt that without her help we would not have been able to achieve the highest standard. Thanks again Francine!

Francine went above and beyond in responding to our urgent need for intervention in a business crisis with a rogue associate. Because this turned out to be a specialty case with unique requirements, she spoke personally the very next day with a top colleague, who in turn cleared her schedule to meet with us ASAP. It would have taken days and probably weeks to get to see this second lawyer. We are forever in Francine's debt for the help she gave us.

She answered my Avvo query with respect and knowledge generously shared. She picked up on fact that it wasn't just about a $2600 fee paid - the acct blew a sol and an 80 year old lost $30K. Other attys answered as if "not worth any atty's time" bc money is so small. That seems like an stand for our legal system. I wish NC & USA had more attys like this fine lady.

Francine helped me complete two important client contracts. She involved me in creating the document, went through it line by line to ensure I understood what was in it, was willing to make changes based on my input and ensured that I was completely satisfied with the product.

I really appreciate that Ms. Francine! It means a lot that you take your job to the next level by truly caring about the people that you work with. There is no doubt in my mind that when the time is right the time will be right. When the time is right I will defiantly be coming to you for all of my attorney work. If anyone every ask me about an attorney to use I will for sure reference them to you!

Mr. Woodlief was outstanding in helping move my case forward. Our eventual settlement was far more than my company ever expected. As a C-level executive, I demand professionalism, grace, tenacity, and creativity. To date, I've not met anyone that embodies all of this and more. His unsurpassed knowledge of the peripheral areas of law that affected our needs was also impressive. We called on him to assist us with debt restructuring and still retain him for other issues. It is be my pleasure to recommend Mr. Woodlief without reservation.

George handled everything from the interview to settlement. Throughout the process, I always felt I was in good hands. At the consultation, George took the time to understand the case, including my priorities and concerns. He tailored his communication to my needs. He was immediately able to walk me through the most likely courses the case would take, and this ended up being accurate. Where we had choices for how to proceed, I was presented with clear alternatives, and it was up to me. Other than that, I let him handle everything. He was always available by email or by phone within 1 day, even when he had other trials going on. The experts he hired to add specialized knowledge were appropriate. With George, I felt protected from the messy and frustrating aspects of this process. I just had to show up, and tell my story, as needed. In documents he prepared, conversations and meetings we had, it was clear that he took the time to understand the details of the case inside and out. It became clear that the other side was not reasonable, and I was glad to have George there to give them a dose of reality. I felt confident that we arrived at an optimal outcome. I am glad I hired George.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Mill Valley, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
