Marisa is amazing! She is extremely intelligent and knows the law very very well. Besides being very intelligent, Marisa is very "human" and have compassion and understand the emotional distress and damage I went through with my unlawful termination case. She walked me through everything and didn't act like a cold attorney that only wanted money. She really cared about what happened and really made the stressful process much more bearable. Make no mistake, don't take her kindheartedness for weakness. Marisa was super TOUGH when it came to defending me and attacking the other side. I am so grateful that she was on my side of the table. Without her I really would not have proceeded with the case. It's stressful and Marisa understood that and really guided me well. Needless to say, I was very satisfied with everything. If you want someone that's kind and understanding to you, but really beat the other side mercilessly, then I really recommend Marisa! She's smart and without her, I really didn't know what I would have done. Job well done Marisa and THANK YOU so much for everything!

I hired an employment law firm and filed a lawsuit against a former employer for years of unpaid overtime. Marisa was the associate but became my primary contact. She was very knowledgeable about the law and always answered my emails promptly. She was there for my deposition and mediation. She was a lot of fun to be around. We had some good laughs and was a real person and not intimidating at all. She was patient and understanding especially as things drew to a close and I was a basket of nerves. Well, I won my suit and I'm sorry I won't get to see her anymore. She was an awesome attorney.

Hired Marisa to help me with a wrongful term/breach of contract employment matter. She did an excellent job drafting the mediation brief. I felt she had a very good understanding of the issues from both sides. She represented me well.

I made some very stupid mistakes with my friends a couple of years ago, and ended up getting a court letter in the mail about a year later stating that I was being charged with 3 misdemeanors. This was my first time ever being involved with the law, as I had never received even a parking ticket prior to this incident. I felt completely overwhelmed and anxious for days, and even had trouble sleeping. I searched around for different lawyers in my area, and immediately felt comfortable with Dyke and his assistant Kym. He was extremely understanding of my situation, yet very straightforward and clear with his approach to tackle the whole ordeal. He helped to put my mind at ease with the court case and was very professional, yet friendly, at the same time. He handled everything for me and represented in me court. Dyke was able to get my charges dismissed through some volunteer work and restitution fees. I was given a 2nd chance in life to stay on a straight path and out of trouble, and have done just that since this case about 2 years ago. I highly recommend Dyke, his work is absolutely superb.

Dyke is a legend as far as I am concerned. He has gotten me out of big time trouble using his knowledge of the law. While he has a small firm just him and his secretary I have witnessed the magic that he can do in a court room. He is straight to the point when it comes to your case and is passionate about each and everyone of his clients. While he's been my attorney for multiple cases he has never let me down even when the odds where severely stacked against me. Not to mention he is willing to work with you on his cost, while he isn't cheap he is extremely fair. But as far as attorneys go I will never use a different one and would recommend him to anyone I care about if they were to get themselves in a sticky situation. I can't thank the man enough for what he has done for me!

This is long overdue. I am a former Marine, got into some stupid trouble (first time in my life). Dyke was a great advocate and adviser. He didn't sugar coat anything but he remained buoyant and positive. Despite fact that I ended up pleading out and going to prison I know Dyke did everything in his power to help me. All is good now and it's a lesson learned. Smart, trustworthy and reliable and good taste in music and guitar players. Highest recommendation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Mission Viejo, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
