Both my husband and I were extremely happy with Mr. Philip Daunt's help regarding our legal matter. We only wish his business was in our area, we would hire him to advise and represent us in court. We would recommend him to anyone who needs legal advice. Thank you so much for all your time, help and advice. Sincerely, Bob and Pamela Schooley

Anyone who rents in the Monterey area can appreciate the cost of renting and with that comes high deposits. Its really important to know what you are getting into when you sign a lease. I cant say enough about Mr. Daunt. He helped me on a residential lease that went wrong. He knows the laws and was able to guide me in the right direction. I really enjoyed his approach to my problems and of course his great guidance that worked extremely well for me.

Printed info first received was very helpful $39 for a few minutes with an attorney was very helpful in helping me decide which direction to go forward. My only question would be why was not the $39 talk with an attorney for a few minutes offered sooner.

Philip J. Daunt has long been my first choice for legal advice and legal representation for both my clients and me personally. I have been a licensed real estate broker since 1990. I owned two Prudential Realty Franchises until I sold them in 2006. I currently am an associate broker with Coldwell Banker. Philip has the knowledge and the demeanor to assist our clients with the professionalism that we would expect when referring our clients who need good council and an honest assessment of their situation. Mr. Daunt has given me the same great service for my real estate legal needs in several instances. Philip Daunt has a stellar reputation here on the Monterey Peninsula as a real estate lawyer and as a short sale negotiator with his company known as Strategic Loan Services, LLC. His addition to the short sale process as a licensed attorney allows the proper legal advice to be given to our clients when they ask those questions that require an attorney to answer. Philip stays current with the law and he gives the client added confidence when they are assisting how to proceed with their financial decision regarding their real estate. SLS, LLC has done over sixty successful short sales for my clients in the past six years. I have always been confident that the representation would be excellent. My clients enjoy the initial interviews and the short sale approval letter reviews. Philip conducts those interviews personally and requires that the clients always go through the process. They have a full understanding of their standing when those reviews are completed. Philip approaches his litigation with a solution as his motivation. I have been witness in my own legal questions that Philip has handled for me. His dialog sets the tone for a successful mediation. The opposition is minimized because his approach is solution based. Philip Daunt has earned our praise. His billing practices are accurate and fair. He is a pleasure to work with.

Finally an honest attorney that will actually tell you when have a good case, when a case does or doesn't make business sense, and whether you should pull the trigger on litigation or not. Philip Daunt understands that in many cases only the attorneys benefit and he finds ways to work out a favorable resolution without wasting your time and money. I've worked with more than my share of attorneys over the years, from family law to hot shot litigators. After working with Philip on a number of issues over the past several years, I can say Philip is the first person I call now for any legal matter whatsoever.

I've never been in a situation of retaining legal councel to pursue accident injury claim. The firm that Denis works for was a recommendation from a partner as well as a friend and although I was reticant to pursue the case, I did. Denis was instrumental in putting me at ease and informing me fully on how the case would progress and what our collective responsibilities would be. Denis and his staff ensured that the process would be as smooth and painless as possible and I thank him for that. His attention to my case was consistent throughout and although I don't want to be in the situation again, if I were, I would want Denis to handle the case.

Denis was an honest, passionate, articulate and advocate of my family during a VERY complicated and stressful case. He made himself available to explain the nuances of all the legal aspects of the case and was understanding of the stresses caused by the experience. His attention to detail was unbelievable. I would unequivocally recommend Denis.

Ms. Kennedy helped me through a difficult accident and she got me a great settlement. Each time I needed to understand what was going on in my case, it was explained to me so that I knew what was happening and why. Her expertise as she negotiated with the insurance companies was amazing. Ms. Kennedy's professionalism and knowledge of the law helped me get a settlement that I didn't think was possible.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Monterey, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
