Andrew, with RSC Law Group, was the 3rd attorney I worked with in the course of my messy and protracted divorce. Andrew was amazingly patient with me as he helped me navigate through that legal nightmare. He spent a lot of time explaining to my stress addled brain all my options and suggesting next steps. He was a tremendous advisor to me and I truly appreciated that he and his firm gave me the guidance that was best for my family and not what generated the most billable hours. Divorce is not a clear cut process and I took a lot of comfort knowing that I had a place to turn to when I needed help. In court I felt well represented and I liked that he didn't spend time arguing with opposing counsel outside of the courtroom arena. If things were different he'd still be my attorney but I appreciate that they left my family and I in a safer and more secure place than they originally found us in.

Andrew has handled our family law case for the past 4 Years here in Monterey. Our case was very complicated and involved child custody, visitation, and support. He was very attentive to our needs and patient with us during the difficult and emotional experience. He was knowledgeable and paid special attention to detail which helped us win each time we went to court. Andrew was always prepared and swift to answer any questions via phone or email and there were even some times that he helped me during the weekends or holidays. I have recommended him to many friends here in the area and will continue to recommend him and utilize him for my own case as needed.

She is the Champion my friends, She'll keep fighting til the end. This is how I embody Attorney Carolyn Harris. I have just ended a 1 1/2 year guardianship/custody "Battle". I have been the legal guardian of my grandchild and the biological father wanted sole custody. Carolyn came highly recommended from a Los Angeles Attorney. She was forthright with all of the issues that I would encounter. I had the end goal in mind and she chipped away at each of the legal procedures that were needed to attain my goal. I had a very slim chance of retaining guardianship but Attn. Harris was methodical, professional, and in tune with all of the procedures that were needed for each step. She is a TRUE professional. She doesn't get caught up with the underhandedness that some lawyers employ. Her detailed questions and record keeping of my case were SPOT ON. With Attn. Harris's years of working in the legal system, she knows how the law works and does her research. My case ended with a trial and Attn. Harris was PREPARED, and that is how you WIN!!! Her knowledge of the law is why I think Carolyn Harris is a CHAMPION. I would HIGHLY recommend Attn. Harris for any legal issues.

During my consultation with Attorney Harris, I was impressed that my case file had already been obtained and reviewed. Ms. Harris explained exactly what I needed to do, and she gave me the option to do this myself or to hire her as my attorney. Ms. Harris immediately began electronically filing the needed documents. I was so impressed with her legal expertise and professionalism. Now my marriage is finally over, and I did not have to appear in court. Thank you so much to Attorney Harris and her legal assistant Melissa. I highly recommend Carolyn B. Harris as she is an excellent family law/divorce attorney.

Carolyn is upfront, understands the law, and knows the courts in Monterey. She understands the importance of Fathers having shared-custody and parents who are "obstacles" to their children's relationship to their own Father. I hired Carolyn to help me with a long drawn out divorce centered on parental alienation. She helped me reach the goal for the children: shared custody.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Monterey, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
