After doing extensive research to find the best lawyer in Monterey County, we decided to choose Lawrence Biegel. He was referred to us by a few other attorneys who revered him as the “best around.” Not only did I receive a much better than expected result after a lengthy trial, but Larry was extremely upfront and transparent about the costs involved which was extremely reassuring. I highly recommend Lawrence Biegel as he is an outstanding lawyer who is extremely personable and cares a lot about his clients and getting them the best result possible.

I was a client of Lawrence Biegel during a political conflict with a local politician. I was, and am, extremely dissatisfied with "Larry" Biegel both as a person and as an attorney. I believe that "Larry" sacrificed me for his own personal political/monetary gain. Avvo is a protective site and limits the discussion of debacles. Suffice it to say; I felt that I did not receive the services I paid such a considerably large sum for. Nor would I ever again trust Mr. Biegel's honesty or integrity. I believe he violated not only my civil rights but also violated the client/attorney confidence and facilitated injustices and injury upon me. From my perspective, "Larry" behaved in a deceitful, disrespectful, harmful way and was destructive to me and my interests. I felt threatened by not only his actions & words but in retrospect I think he manipulated me thru fear and his arrogance. I would suggest the services of a true quality attorney and not those of such a lawyer like "Larry".

My 18 year-old son got into bad trouble. We hired Larry (and Tina) on retainer, and they worked with us until the matter was very satisfactorily resolved. I recommend them without reservation. They are excellent advocates, have good client relationship skills, bill very fairly, and GET RESULTS.

She is the Champion my friends, She'll keep fighting til the end. This is how I embody Attorney Carolyn Harris. I have just ended a 1 1/2 year guardianship/custody "Battle". I have been the legal guardian of my grandchild and the biological father wanted sole custody. Carolyn came highly recommended from a Los Angeles Attorney. She was forthright with all of the issues that I would encounter. I had the end goal in mind and she chipped away at each of the legal procedures that were needed to attain my goal. I had a very slim chance of retaining guardianship but Attn. Harris was methodical, professional, and in tune with all of the procedures that were needed for each step. She is a TRUE professional. She doesn't get caught up with the underhandedness that some lawyers employ. Her detailed questions and record keeping of my case were SPOT ON. With Attn. Harris's years of working in the legal system, she knows how the law works and does her research. My case ended with a trial and Attn. Harris was PREPARED, and that is how you WIN!!! Her knowledge of the law is why I think Carolyn Harris is a CHAMPION. I would HIGHLY recommend Attn. Harris for any legal issues.

During my consultation with Attorney Harris, I was impressed that my case file had already been obtained and reviewed. Ms. Harris explained exactly what I needed to do, and she gave me the option to do this myself or to hire her as my attorney. Ms. Harris immediately began electronically filing the needed documents. I was so impressed with her legal expertise and professionalism. Now my marriage is finally over, and I did not have to appear in court. Thank you so much to Attorney Harris and her legal assistant Melissa. I highly recommend Carolyn B. Harris as she is an excellent family law/divorce attorney.

Carolyn is upfront, understands the law, and knows the courts in Monterey. She understands the importance of Fathers having shared-custody and parents who are "obstacles" to their children's relationship to their own Father. I hired Carolyn to help me with a long drawn out divorce centered on parental alienation. She helped me reach the goal for the children: shared custody.

For the average citizen, legal matters are difficult to completely understand as well as get through. After losing my job of over 6 years, that is exactly where I found myself. Worried about my future, confused about the laws, questioning my rights, and unsure what my next step should be; I began an internet search for law firms. I reviewed websites, researched case histories, noted professional achievement awards, and made phone calls to several local practices. Frustrated with the responses I was getting and almost ready to abandon my quest for justice, I called The Law Offices of Nicolas Vrataric. Following the only positive call since I started my search, not only did I have renewed hope in my situation but I also had a consultation scheduled in 2 days. I was politely welcomed into the firm, attentively listened to, expertly advised on any potential case, and given information to take home and go through. There was no pressure or demand to retain their services nor did they rush to get through my consult. I have experienced sincere and professional interactions from every member of the staff since my initial phone call. Mrs. Khan handled most of the proceedings and was my first contact but Mr. Vrataric oversaw every step of the case and was always part of any office meeting. Mrs. Khan always took the time to explain each phase of my case (sometimes more than once) in easy to understand details. She has always been informative, responsive, detailed, and readily available. She was always willing to schedule meetings and calls after hours to avoid jeopardizing my new job. I would highly recommend the Law Offices of Nicolas Vrataric to anyone seeking quality legal representation. In addition to successfully representing my case, Mr. Vratarc, Mrs. Khan, and their entire legal team renewed my faith in our legal system and the lawyers sworn to uphold it. This was the first legal matter I’ve experienced that I was allowed to remain actively involved in the proceedings and I never once felt like just another ‘case’.

I think that communication is #1 when it comes to a lawyer and a client , when something happened in and about my case I was notified. They spent all the time needed on my case and then some, treated me with kindness 100% of the time of my case. They got to the bottom of everything in a timly matter and we are all moving on with our lifes, this was the best choice I made. thanks for the hard work

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Monterey, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
