I had a pretty horrible accident and injury while on a run/jog back in 2013. Trip-and-fall. Invisible dark blue parking stopper. Unlit business/parking establishment. The bottom line was an avulsed tendon, cracked kneecap. Surgically-repaired by a top orthopedic surgeon twelve days later. 3-4 months of GRUELING physical rehab followed. It was a nightmare, a complete interruption of my year/well-being/lifestyle. But for Attorney DePaoli coming-in, taking the case, helping me towards a very fair settlement? It would have left a very sour, bitter taste in my mouth. The gratitude I have to/for this attorney can't be measured. It was not an easy time, an easy case, there were all kinds of issues. Including my own liability for cutting-through an unlit parking lot. Fifteen attorney's refused to take the case. I'd decided to let the whole matter go when a fellow Y member suggested Attorney David A. DePaoli. My friend said, "Speak to David - THEN let it go - as you deserve SOMETHING for all of this pain, angst, recovery, etc. - " Attorney DePaoli is nestled along with two other outstanding attorneys in Montrose. Super easy access, right off of the 2 Freeway, couldn't be easier to locate, park, go in. It's a bristling law firm, a friendly office, and I was welcomed. Dave is a young, brilliant, athletic, friendly, good-looking guy. He didn't think it was an especially good idea to be running at nine p.m. In an area known not to be especially well-lit. Nor did he completely agree with my choice to cut through a dark parking lot. But he did understand the circumstance, did feel both parties were at fault. Therefore it was my great fortunate an attorney of David's stature and background took my case on. I knew I was in excellent hands when we signed the representation agreement. With both David and a second attorney at 2015 Montrose Avenue in Montrose. A week or so before the case would have exceeded the two-year Statute of Limitations. David has worked both sides of Personal Injury cases. So he explained the strengths, the weaknesses of my case. What would be needed on my part (patience/cooperation/medical records). Obviously there was going to be stress, a deposition - it was going to take time (it only took David less than one year to resolve this matter). But David was confident, super- knowledgeable in this area/field. Plus I liked both himself and Attorney Cooper. They put nervous/stressed clients at ease because they kid-a-lot and to relieve the angst/stress. IMHO the case was won at the first deposition. Due to Attorney DePaoli being super-prepared. Not just prepared and spot-on in protecting me through the first (of two) depositions. But spot-on and prepared in the way of all photographs, evidence, medical records, etc. Attorney DePaoli caught - then pointed-out a critical mistake the other side was making. One which could be exploited, used for gain. Rather than choose the option of embarrassing the other side/attorneys? Attorney David A. DePaoli merely pointed OUT the error. While I can't get into specifics? It would/could have been huge, a huge advantage for our side. But by being respectful and honest. Not going for the jugular? David won the respect of the other side/team. Thus a fair and equitable settlement was offered and just ten months later. Just a wonderful attorney and wonderful experience. An attorney I feel great gratitude towards. THANK YOU Attorney David A. DePaoli !! Not just for WINNING but for PUTTING UP with me for a year!! Amazing !!

It sucks having to wonder if you made the right choice. That was never the case Khachik. From start to finish, professionalism, communication, and dedication was excellent. Took my case without question, helped me understand what the foregoing process was going to be like, making the whole ordeal stress-free as can be. Khachik Akhkashian is the right choice, undoubtedly.

The past couple of years have been hard on everyone but I found myself in a personal, medical and financial crisis recently. Filing bankruptcy seemed like the only daunting solution. Khach was warm, confident and comforting. He advised me as if I were part of his family, informed me of my options and warned me of what to expect. We maintained communication through every step. I found Khach's fees to be extremely reasonable and much more affordable that what others attorneys quoted. I'm so grateful to have found him.

We hired Lisa to sort out some.accounts that were left to our children. She lost ALL of our info...SS numbers, bank account numbers, drivers liscence numbers....EVERYTHING! She was horrible at returning our e-mails and phone calls. The whole experience was horrible. My kid's identities are totally compromised at this point and we still have no control over the accounts. Lisa was very apathetic to the situation. She went as far as to try and blame the whole debacle on of her employees that has a drinking problem. I would not recommend Lisa for any legal services regardless of how simple they may seem.

In terms of mediation, she came across as siding with my opposition when they didn't have full proof. My opposition was asking for more money or items than what was in writing from a deceased relative. I came out ahead paying less money going to court than taking her advice. I didn't trust my opposition because I had caught them in lies. I actually ended up going to another lawyer for mediation prior to court. Also, she doesn't seem knowledgeable about dealing with handicapped individuals. I felt insulted by comments she made to me. She felt that it's easy to deal with Social Security issues (SSI) when Social Security drags things out, any government benefits family members get and government becomes involved will just drag things out. She blamed me as the person who hired her. That does not help to constitute good client/lawyer relationship. Benefits a handicapped individual can get can change their financial situation and can effect them financially in some legal issues. Certain facilities for the disabled are limited in number in California and she seems unaware of this and I felt she blamed me as her client for not moving a disabled relative sooner. It's also frustrating to have her to tell you to do something and then she wants to do something contrary to what you felt she wanted you to do in the first place. I felt every time I communicated with her she would in the end always want me to do something contrary. This drags things out due to her own actions. I felt that communication with her was also tough because she joined another law firm after I had hired her as a solo attorney so she only became available then on a more limited basis.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Montrose, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
