David explained the legal process clearly and helped me navigate every step with confidence. The entire team showed real compassion, and their dedication led to a positive outcome. I worked with the Law Offices of David Lederman on a child custody case, and I can’t say enough good things about the help I got. As a father, going through this process was tough, but the team was supportive and always made sure I understood what was going on. They fought hard for me, and I’m grateful that I get to be with my kids. The whole team was helpful, professional, and always responsive to my questions. They really cared about my case and made me feel confident throughout the process. Highly recommended.

I had David for more than several years. There are positive aspects and in most cases progress made but it has come at a terrible cost, excessive wasted time and fees. Often times, key issues I made, most concerning facts about the litigation, I kept reminding and warning to David but always get pushback and always lose on the very aspect I kept warning. It has become such a problematic and chronic to the point it has become clear pattern of wasting legal fees for no reason and i have become weary of evening reminding him because it is just brushed off. Availability is another huge area of concern, after 3 years, he still as busy as ever, always in trial and extended days and weeks and unreachable. The issue is somewhat mitigated by calling assistant by scheduling certain date and time but that is significant overhead and far out in the future i.e. 2-3 weeks away when there are something needed to be done much sooner with urgency.

This review is overdue, but it's been a year since my final settlement conference and I'm still trying to fix the mistakes Mr. Lederman made in my divorce. I've had to hire other attorneys to correct multiple oversights and errors he made in my case. It's cost me an additional year (and counting), and many times more than his initial estimate. I would seriously consider taking Mr. Lederman to court for malpractice, but I still have my hands full with the divorce he did a remarkably poor job on. I originally hired David based on his reputation. I had a similar experience to another negative review here. I was working with another attorney at their firm, and was reassigned to David. Here are the reasons for my negative review: - of the 5 things he requested in my settlement conference, he got me zero. Based on the status quo requirements in California for health insurance, he may have even gotten me less than what was legally required. Looking over the conference transcript, he told the judge that MediCal would provide the specialty benefits I'd need (it doesn't). In the transcript, the judge replied with skepticism to that proposal. - Mr. Lederman left me hanging with an outstanding bill for thousands of dollars my ex was court-ordered to pay before the final settlement conference, despite my having emailed Mr. Lederman multiple times to get it resolved beforehand. - After many months of assiduous billing by his firm, and extensive discovery showing that my ex had the funds to pay my legal fees, I asked about how to get my ex to pay. His firm hadn't yet gotten around to asking for support or attorney's fees, and never did: something both the opposing counsel and the judge remarked on. - when trying to get my ex to declare known, proven, and highly visible accounts for the initial financial disclosure, Mr. Lederman eventually gave up, instructing me to settle the divorce with him, and pursue the omitted assets in a separate lawsuit. - The opposing counsel pressed for a resolution conference three weeks after the initial meet-and-confer conference. The judge said this wasn't enough time to get outstanding issues finalized, but Mr. Lederman insisted he would "make do". The judge was right, and now I've had to hire other attorneys for the subpoenas and discovery that should have happened before the final settlement conference, not after. - his firm spent 6 weeks hammering out a privacy order they recommended to protect sensitive information. Later I saw that the privacy order they drew up required any confidential papers to be marked as such before they were filed. To my knowledge, not a single paper was marked as confidential, and now my private information is part of the public record. I have to hire another attorney to take care of this. - In terms of the client preparation he mentions, I never received a case strategy or cost analysis, despite asking for it. The afternoon before the settlement conference hearing, I had to call his office to find out how to log on to the video conference. I had emailed David about it earlier that day, and had no response. I hoped he'd show up, but wasn't entirely sure he would. - this was all with assiduous and extensive billing from his firm. Going over the bills, I'd find entries for other cases that had slipped into my bill. I need to take responsibility for my part, and I stayed with his firm when there were multiple red flags. But, I've never been divorced before, and I trusted David. There are many qualified family law attorneys in the Bay Area, with no negative reviews, who are competing for your business. I understand my experience may be an outlier, but there's no reason to take the risk when looking to hire a divorce attorney. Divorce is an extraordinarily stressful period in one's life, and my experience with Mr. Lederman made it more so. Choosing him as an attorney prolonged the process, and considerably upped the cost of mine. I hope you find a more reliable advocate.

Due to privacy reasons, I am withholding my name. These are my opinions and my expressions are my legal and protected rights. Mr. Lederman was worth every single penny I paid towards my legal fees. Freedom is all I feel. It is priceless to be done.I cannot alter my past, however, I am not saddled with my future. Mr. Lederman, David, worked hard to dismiss this case. I cannot thank him enough for his years of dedication, expertise and integrity in the legal specialization in Family Law. The Family Law Court feels ... is like is a different breed. Good riddance to it also. The opposing side, the other party, had hoped to punish and decimate me with fees and destroy my good name/ reputation and my livelihood. The assumptions about me were ALL incorrect. Now I can continue to move past the situation and carry on with clarity. I “dodged” a bullet, and am very thankful for having an attorney like Mr. Lederman. He was wonderful, and his services were A+ and even more..

I am happy to share my satisfaction with my estate planning process with Balamuth Law. I had previously initiated piecemeal efforts toward that end. These left me with a false sense of security which soon became apparent. I am very relieved to now have the confidence of knowing that my wishes are spelled out properly and will be a great relief to my family when the time comes. The staff at Balamuth was very pleasant and walked me through all of the hurdles involved with this important task. I am pleased to recommend them highly.

This was an amazing 1st experience. The Balamuth group were so attentive to me. They went above and beyond. They delved into areas i never even thought of. They minimized my confusion and doubt. They were very understanding of my injuries and came to my home. They focused on all areas and avenues to get the best outcome for my age and how this would affect the rest of my life. They never ever tried to force me to settle. They were amazing in all aspects of my case. You cannot lose with Balamith law group..the best!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Moraga, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
