So Incredibly Thankful for the Ashcraft Firm Team! My Mother has recently completed her trust after years of uncertainly and confusion of best course of action, etc. The entire team made her feel comfortable and explained the entire process to her. She and her entire family are so happy with the piece of mind of her secured assets and knowing the Ashcraft team is always available for questions and alterations All of our sincerest gratitude to you all!

Was able to get conservatorship for my kid without any problems through Nickerson Law May 2024. I called a couple of months after to seek counsel regarding some other issues, Mr. Nickerson called me back himself to answer my questions. I very much appreciate the follow-up!

Pros
1
Knowledgeable and efficient in handling complex legal matters like estate planning, especially for clients with special needs family members
“If you have a special needs family member, Jeff knows exactly how to properly take care of your estate and cover things you didn't even think of.”
2
Provides professional, friendly, and personalized service from the attorneys and staff
“Mr. Nickerson, his paralegal Cassie and receptionist Ashley are amazing. I highly recommend them. Very professional, efficient and friendly service.”
3
Highly organized and streamlined process that takes the stress out of legal matters
“They handled every question, every concern and walked us through the process from beginning to end seamlessly -- taking all the stress out of a potentially challenging process.”
4
Attorneys are patient, thorough, and ensure clients fully understand all documents and steps
“Jeff was very patient with as we had a lot of questions. This something we need for our special child. Wish I know this sooner.”
5
Provides excellent value and reasonable pricing for the services offered
“The price was very reasonable too. I would not hesitate to recommend Nickerson Law.”
Cons
1
Potential issues with communication and responsiveness in rare cases
“They were recommended to me by someone they worked with and when I wanted to make my own decisions, they dropped me and refunded my money. Their email even said it was because I didn't want to do things the way this 3rd party wanted. They are shady and untrustworthy.”
2
Extra fees or requirements (like a mandatory financial education course) that some clients found unnecessary
“Call any other bankruptcy attorney in the area and they will tell you that you don't have to pay $1,000 for the extra credit course the Ashcraft firm forces you to take. This is a rip-off.”

There arent enough words to express how much of an AMAZING Attorney Michael is. He sets the bar on the level of communication he has with his clients. He takes so much pride in his ability to fight for his client, that he studies each and every word in your case. There were details he remembered that I had informed him of, and as I thought I was notifying him for the first time, he finished my update all on his own, remembering every little detail, as if it happened directly to him. I forgot I had already relayed the update, but I cant even begin to describe the overwhelming feeling of comfort to know Michael was not just my attorney, he was someone who genuinely cared about me and my kids. We went to our hearing, Michael all prepared and excited to represent me, evidence and notes in one hand and confidence in the other. Michael is not a very tall man by any means, but the fight he had inside of him, the fight he used defending and representing me, was one of an army from Sparta!! As a mom, going through court against my kids father, who instigated constant chaos, is that last and the hardest situation you ever want to face in general, however, just to know that Michael was in my corner fighting with and for me and my kids, made this situation a bit easier to handle. Thank you Michael, from the bottom of my heart. You will surely be missed at Westover!!

I canโ€™t begin to explain how assuring Sharon Cosgrove was of my case, not only did she answer any questions I had but she also gave my family their comfort of mind knowing I was going to go home with a dismissed case! With her determined attitude along with everything else that makes her great I would highly recommend her to anybody that needs help. I was blessed to have her as an attorney!

Ms. Ryan is the yardstick by which all other public defenders ought be measured. She was my final court appointed attorney over a 5 year stretch of petty drug offenses. Her efforts, compassion, and genuine concern changed my life. She saw to it that I received high quality residential substance abuse treatment at the facility of my own choosing, as opposed to the standard "local outpatient/work release" sentence which always results in another probation violation and another trip to county jail. Whitney Ryan is not only a talented lawyer, but an exemplary human being. I will always be grateful to her . . . Thank you, Ms. Ryan.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Murrieta, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
