I cannot express how difficult it was to work with Marietta Raqueno. I hired Robert as my divorce attorney and she came as part of the package as his assistant. On many occasions, she delayed relaying critical information from the other party in a timely manner, causing me to make important decisions without the benefit of that information. She told me she didn't agree with the lead attorney’s strategy (Robert) and tried to get me to go in a different direction, injecting an unnecessary and infuriating level of chaos and drama into an already difficult situation. To top it off she was arrogant and seemed to lack experience, compassion and maturity . I was very happy with Robert. However if Marietta Raqueno is assigned as the assistant on your case, I would recommend requesting someone else.

Marietta helped me through the most trying time in my life. Prior to the pleasure of her taking my case over, I had the unpleasant situation of a less experienced attorney which kept me up all night because of worry. When Marietta took over, my worries disappeared. She understood my goals, explained my options to me throughout the process and kept me informed throughout my case. She always welcomed my comments and respected my opinion. She has an eye for detail and does a good job getting her point across. She made sure I was comfortable with all work product before sending it to posing counsel. As for communication, she is formal and downright honest, which I believe people may mistake for being rude or arrogant. As a businessperson myself, I truly appreciate these qualities about her as she has exceeded my expectations. Her candor is something I quickly learned to appreciate. It was the mutual respect of client and attorney that led to a favorable result in my case - along with Marietta's knowledge of the law and her work product. She came highly recommended as an attorney and I would recommend her to anybody needing a family law attorney.

I have worked with several family law attorneys through the years, and Marietta is the most responsive I have met. She seemed to really care about not only the outcome of my case, but my family. She was a strong advocate for my family and was able to help us get a good outcome. I recommend her to others.

This gal was rude and was not knowledgable. She also couldn't keep the details of my case straight and faked that she knew them. She was late court and did not apologize. I will not recommend her to any of my buddies. Made a big mistake in hiring this attorney.

James Sweeney is unparalleled in his professional and easy-going handling of his cases, the meticulous research he engages with, and the drive to success in his cases. I can say that because he won my case. He aims to win and has the drive to follow it through to the end. If you need an attorney to go to bat for you, James Sweeney would be welcome on any team as a pinch hitter to get the job completed with everything given to that goal.

Mr. Sweeney is one of the smartest people I have ever met in my life. He knows the law better than I could imagine and was able to help me win 2 court cases with the background and knowledge he has learned throughout the years. A family friend recommended him to me and I am surely grateful to have him on my team. I recomend Mr. James Sweeney and know he is the #1 defence attorney in Orange County California

All I had was a traffic ticket, so I went online to ticket snipers to remove it and they failed and offered no way to fix the issue. Mr. Sweeney refilled and has given me a strategy that I can stand behind. I'll update my review when I win the case!

Vanessa was assigned to my case and her and her team took care of everything. They made sure to communicate with me at every step and I can't say how much I appreciated it. My mother ended up getting into a car accident a few years later and I immediately reached out to Vanessa. I can't recommend them enough, they always get the job done!!

I would highly recommend Kalfayan Merjanian. They are there for you to help to answer any questions or just check in on how you are feeling. From day one until the closing of your case (5 years in my case) you have someone on your side. Thank you!

I was in a bad car accident last year and I was recommended to work with Kalfayan Merjanian and I’m glad I did. Getting into a car accident and all the aftermath of an accident is stressful, but working with this firm it made it all a breeze for me. They helped me find the medical care I needed and made appointments for me. Very communicative throughout the process. It was a pleasure working with everyone from this firm.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Newport Beach, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
