I was represented by Ray & Bishop. I almost lost everything especially 6 years of nursing school during this time my father had a TIA, car repossessed and I was without work and couldn’t pay my bills. I would recommend Mr. Bishop who knew I was innocent and understood the legal complexities of my case. While it was a long waiting period I can now get back to my career and dust myself off to begin a new. Thank you Mr. Bishop for everything! DNM

I was searching for a licensed defense attorney in California that specialized specifically in defending nurses against accusations from BVNPT/BRN and came across Ray & Bishop, PLC through a google search. I read reviews that former clients have posted about their representation and also looked up their webpage online. I decided to take a leap of faith after reviewing their reviews, website, and blog and seeing the successful comments and how satisfied clients who were represented by Ray & Bishop, PLC. were. I was dealing with a criminal matter that was dismissed but later was picked up by BVNPT and was sent an accusation that my license was being investigated and that they wanted to discipline me based on these allegations. The process from when the incident occurred to posting an accusation was approximately 5 years. Long story short, I was assigned to Mr. John Bishop regarding my matter with the boards and he was attentive, knowledgeable, matter of fact, understanding, straight forward, and responsive in answering my never ending questions and concerns. He was genuinely concerned and was available via email and by phone. Even though he was busy he would return my emails/calls promptly. Luckily, my case did not have to go through an administrative hearing and after 5 months I received the most wonderful news I could have ever asked for “accusation withdrawn” Words can’t express how grateful and relieved I am that this nightmare was finally resolved and I can finally move on. I can’t thank Mr. Bishop enough for his representation and how successful he was with his communication with BVNPT and ultimately avoiding any discipline against my license and not having to attend a hearing. I can say without reservations that if you are facing your license against being disciplined, please give Ray & Bishop, PLC. a call and do not hesitate to seek their consultation and representation.

I received a discipline in another state and California immediately followed suit. During trial, I did my best in answering the prosecutor’s questions. John would then ask me questions that further clarified my answers so that my answers could not be misinterpreted. I truly appreciate John. He allowed me the opportunity to tell my truth and helped save my career. God forbid that I ever be in this situation again; but if so, I wouldn’t hesitate to rehire him again and again. Thanks so much John!

I was in need a of lawyer to help guide me through the process of defending and retaining my nursing license. I shopped around and had multiple consults with different attorneys, many of whom telling me things I wanted to hear in order to earn my business. Mr. Bishop stood out from the rest due to his transparency and candor and was upfront with me from the start about what this process entailed and what I could expect. Throughout the process leading up to and during my hearing, Mr. Bishop was attentive, supportive, hardworking, empathetic, and effective. He worked to get me an excellent outcome with my nursing board and I couldn’t have been happier. With a shorter probation period than most, I am now petitioning the board for an early dismissal and I plan on hiring Mr. Bishop to represent me again. I would highly recommend him to anyone licensed professional seeking legal assistance. I can’t thank him enough for his help and will be forever grateful.

James Sweeney is unparalleled in his professional and easy-going handling of his cases, the meticulous research he engages with, and the drive to success in his cases. I can say that because he won my case. He aims to win and has the drive to follow it through to the end. If you need an attorney to go to bat for you, James Sweeney would be welcome on any team as a pinch hitter to get the job completed with everything given to that goal.

All I had was a traffic ticket, so I went online to ticket snipers to remove it and they failed and offered no way to fix the issue. Mr. Sweeney refilled and has given me a strategy that I can stand behind. I'll update my review when I win the case!

Vanessa was assigned to my case and her and her team took care of everything. They made sure to communicate with me at every step and I can't say how much I appreciated it. My mother ended up getting into a car accident a few years later and I immediately reached out to Vanessa. I can't recommend them enough, they always get the job done!!

I would highly recommend Kalfayan Merjanian. They are there for you to help to answer any questions or just check in on how you are feeling. From day one until the closing of your case (5 years in my case) you have someone on your side. Thank you!

I was in a bad car accident last year and I was recommended to work with Kalfayan Merjanian and I’m glad I did. Getting into a car accident and all the aftermath of an accident is stressful, but working with this firm it made it all a breeze for me. They helped me find the medical care I needed and made appointments for me. Very communicative throughout the process. It was a pleasure working with everyone from this firm.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Newport Beach, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
