Hi neglect caused me to loose one of my cases and my home. Had he been prepared I would have won hands down. And instead of being ethical he double bills, is neglectful and pretty much a bad guy. He asked me to break the law which I refused and lied about communication only to extend my case, increase my billing for himself and Glenn Mehner who by the way never completed work and lied to the court.

No one wants to say they have a family law attorney on retainer, but if you need some serious representation, you've got to hire John R. Schilling (who my father-in-law has dubbed, "The Orange County Baracuda"). John has been my family law attorney for years, always offering sound advisement for a myriad of divorce, and custody-related issues. John's office and staff (Tara Villa and Vickie Conner) have been so personal and kind during some of the darkest times of my family's life. With his unrelenting determination to seek a just and fair outcome for his client, John was able to gain "client control" over my petulant ex-husband that even HIS own attorney could not. John is very confident and commanding in the courtroom, and has decades of experience with all the judges and any fellow attorney worth their salt. THANK YOU, John, Tara, and Vickie!

If you want great results - then you must hire John. He has handled two of my divorces and each time he exceeded my expectations.

I hired Mr. Schilling in September of 2007, He worked on a child custody case for close to a decade and below are simply facts, nothing disparaging, just facts. He got absolutely nothing done for me and is billing almost a half a million dollars. I want to be clear, Mr. Schilling should not be hired under any circumstance, for that matter you should try your very best to accomplish what you can through mediation if at all possible. Mr. Schilling is exceptionally good at playing the smooth operator and telling you everything you want hear. He tells you famous clients he has had or he got custody for a porn star. I don't care, I want the best help I can get. There is an inherent problem here, this is a very incestuous group, same lawyers, same judges day in and day out. Some clients are higher paying than others and these attorneys cannot afford to anger a judge on your case when there is so much riding on another case with the same judge. The longer the fight the more money for the attorney's, there is absolutely no reason for any matter to be settled in a timely manner. Mr. Schilling is a decent guy, he is also a guy who has been practicing law in the neighborhood of 50 years. This presents a problem, things are forgotten, thoughts are lost in court and this is not an arena that you want to have subpar help in. Mr. Schilling did nothing for me, gained nothing and lost a whole lot despite every single report came out in my favor, the female judge did not like me and that was a problem. Decisions of this magnitude are to be based on case law, reports and what is in the best interest of the child not whether the judge likes you. None of this was done and Mr. Schilling let it happen over and over. This was at times nothing more than a joke to him. Mr. Schilling told me in court, we could really go after this woman and win if you had money, but you don't and he walked away. My life and my child's life is not a joke. Do not make the same mistake I did, try for reason, if that doesn't work find an attorney that can really help you, in my opinion Mr. Schilling cannot do that.

Mr. Schilling is a marvelous trial attorney, he is very professional and calm, unless when at trial. He got me wonderful results and I highly recommend him to anyone who is in need of a family law attorney. Mr. Schilling's office staff was absolutely amazing! I was always kept in the loop about my case and got documents in a timely manner. I can't thank them enough for all they have done for me!

James Sweeney is unparalleled in his professional and easy-going handling of his cases, the meticulous research he engages with, and the drive to success in his cases. I can say that because he won my case. He aims to win and has the drive to follow it through to the end. If you need an attorney to go to bat for you, James Sweeney would be welcome on any team as a pinch hitter to get the job completed with everything given to that goal.

Mr. Sweeney is one of the smartest people I have ever met in my life. He knows the law better than I could imagine and was able to help me win 2 court cases with the background and knowledge he has learned throughout the years. A family friend recommended him to me and I am surely grateful to have him on my team. I recomend Mr. James Sweeney and know he is the #1 defence attorney in Orange County California

All I had was a traffic ticket, so I went online to ticket snipers to remove it and they failed and offered no way to fix the issue. Mr. Sweeney refilled and has given me a strategy that I can stand behind. I'll update my review when I win the case!

Vanessa was assigned to my case and her and her team took care of everything. They made sure to communicate with me at every step and I can't say how much I appreciated it. My mother ended up getting into a car accident a few years later and I immediately reached out to Vanessa. I can't recommend them enough, they always get the job done!!

I would highly recommend Kalfayan Merjanian. They are there for you to help to answer any questions or just check in on how you are feeling. From day one until the closing of your case (5 years in my case) you have someone on your side. Thank you!

I was in a bad car accident last year and I was recommended to work with Kalfayan Merjanian and I’m glad I did. Getting into a car accident and all the aftermath of an accident is stressful, but working with this firm it made it all a breeze for me. They helped me find the medical care I needed and made appointments for me. Very communicative throughout the process. It was a pleasure working with everyone from this firm.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Newport Beach, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
