I'll be honest Family Law is messy and emotional and I feel so blessed to have been referred to Marc Mitzner and his team. They helped me with a complex Domestic Violence, Custody and Divorce Case. From the moment I came into his office everyone was extremely accommodating, professional and very conscientious of the intense emotional state I was in. They executed everything as they promised and in the time frame they said they would. I was constantly updated of my case status. I never had to follow up and ask for any paperwork as it was always emailed to me immediately. When I went to court with Marc and Christina it was easy to see that their reputations were well respected in the court room and with the judge. There is so much emotion involved in Family Law and during this crisis I was not thinking as clearly as I normally am, I couldn't have been in better hands during this experience. I never felt like I didn't ask enough questions or that I was rushed and if I did have a question they were always very timely to get back to me. It was clear they were extremely experienced, their knowledge speaks for itself, but from day one they clearly informed me of their plan of action, the possible outcomes and continued to do so throughout the process. I know they went above and beyond for me, even for my kids -when I had to bring them into the office they offered them tv , snacks and drawing supplies! If you are in need of an attorney for any reason you should not pass on the opportunity to work with an someone like Marc Mitzner with such credible experience, but an entire team that also cares about what they are fighting for. I can't thank them enough.

Mr. Mitzner and his team are, hands down, the most professional, hard working and attentive attorney team that I've ever worked with. His extensive experience and high standing among his peers coupled with his in depth knowledge of California Family Law along with his work ethic combining the 'science' of a divorce and with the 'art' of a property separation ensured that not only were my current interests protected in a fair & equitable manner, but that my future was ensured as well. Mr. Mitzner and his team continually went above and beyond acting as a critical coordinator of actions and planning, often times being pre-emptive and addressing something before I even considered it. He has a great and easy going personality that facilitates conversation. He’s attentive, listening to what a customer says and he is extremely adept at perceiving things that sometime go unsaid. Mr. Mitzner and his team are always responsive to inquiries/communications and often times burned the midnight oil to ensure that my interests were protected. If anyone is in need of a Divorce Attorney, they will not go wrong by giving Mr. Mitzner their business and trust. He is a consummate, knowledgeable professional at the top of his field.

Finding Marc and his staff was a true blessing in my life. I was facing a horrible child support case for my first time, lost and naive to the entire process. Most attorneys I met with prior to Marc tried to take advantage me by attempting to make things more complex than they really were knowing that desperate people always pay. Not Marc though he explained the process so simple and straight forward. During the court hearings he doesn't just show up ,he comes prepared and fights for you in a professional way that I felt the judge really responded well to. He helped me win what should have been a losing case and I can't thank him enough. I would absolutely recommend Marc mitzner and his staff too everyone In need of a family law attorney. He is trustworthy, professional, and great at what he does.

Marc has worked hard on an extremely difficult case due to the opposition and opposing counsel using many bad faith tactics throughout litigation. It is hard to come involved in case where the opposition desires to use litigation as a means to seek some type of vengence and has an attorney who has no problem using his anger as a weapon to increase her fees. Most dissolution cases should settle if both sides can be reasonable, but when one side is not, Marc is a wonderful attorney to have to protect you emotionally and represent you professionally. My case is still not complete but I am confident that Marc will see this matter to a positive resolution for my family very soon.

Marc is a stand up attorney who is respectful to his fellow attorneys, extrememly fair and very knowledgeable. He is reasonably priced for the amount of overtime and hard work he will put in on your matter. He returns phone calls and emails and is truly understanding of the situation you are going through. He is extremely deicated to his practice and his clients and it shows in his work.

James Sweeney is unparalleled in his professional and easy-going handling of his cases, the meticulous research he engages with, and the drive to success in his cases. I can say that because he won my case. He aims to win and has the drive to follow it through to the end. If you need an attorney to go to bat for you, James Sweeney would be welcome on any team as a pinch hitter to get the job completed with everything given to that goal.

Mr. Sweeney is one of the smartest people I have ever met in my life. He knows the law better than I could imagine and was able to help me win 2 court cases with the background and knowledge he has learned throughout the years. A family friend recommended him to me and I am surely grateful to have him on my team. I recomend Mr. James Sweeney and know he is the #1 defence attorney in Orange County California

All I had was a traffic ticket, so I went online to ticket snipers to remove it and they failed and offered no way to fix the issue. Mr. Sweeney refilled and has given me a strategy that I can stand behind. I'll update my review when I win the case!

Vanessa was assigned to my case and her and her team took care of everything. They made sure to communicate with me at every step and I can't say how much I appreciated it. My mother ended up getting into a car accident a few years later and I immediately reached out to Vanessa. I can't recommend them enough, they always get the job done!!

I would highly recommend Kalfayan Merjanian. They are there for you to help to answer any questions or just check in on how you are feeling. From day one until the closing of your case (5 years in my case) you have someone on your side. Thank you!

I was in a bad car accident last year and I was recommended to work with Kalfayan Merjanian and I’m glad I did. Getting into a car accident and all the aftermath of an accident is stressful, but working with this firm it made it all a breeze for me. They helped me find the medical care I needed and made appointments for me. Very communicative throughout the process. It was a pleasure working with everyone from this firm.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Newport Beach, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
