Paul is AMAZING! You cannot go wrong hiring him for your family law issues. He took the time to help me navigate this difficult time. always responding, providing incredible advice, and actually cares about his clients. His paralegal Rachel is also amazing! She responds immediately and makes sure to help you with the process and answer all of your questions. If I could go above 5 stars I would! So much better than the big firms in my opinion! Hire him you will not regret it!

Paul was an outstanding listener and always had my best interests in mind. Not only have I used him before for my divorce but now 6 years later I needed his expertise again for another child custody battle because I moved out of county. I know for a fact he saved me a lot of money that most attorneys would have not done. He gave me honest advice and advised me on the things most important to my case and told me the truth on when to fold on issues that I would have lost , saving me from endless attorney fees keeping my cost down . Not only did I win my custody battle but we also went into my ex's income since it had been 6 years since we divorced. Not only did I get to live out of county but I also receive 600 more a month for child support because my ex husband's income had nearly doubled since our divorce . He also had to pay half my attorney fees which was fantastic! I really like Paul's personality and feel really comfortable with him on my side. He was sensitive to my needs but also not jaded and really cares about his clients. I recommend him and his services very highly . I am very familiar with the legal system and he is so worth every penny I spent. I walked away from war feeling completely assured that my sons father will never be able to threaten me again. Peace of mind is priceless when raising a child . He made it possible for me to focus on being a great mom instead of worrying about court.

Paul was a professional, thorough, and effective attorney. I had a multi-year, very complex divorce process. Almost everything that could have happened did, complete with contested child support payments, alimony, custody rights, division of assets settlement, mediation, depositions, and eventually hearings/litigation and a CA 730 evaluation. Throughout the stressful process, Paul and his colleagues carefully guided me through the relevant aspects of CA family law, what I needed to do and not do, and prepared me for success. Paul was particularly good at attention to detail and to ensure that all the required documents were prepared on time and in manner that the judge needed. Paul was also very cost conscious, helping me to minimize costs by gathering all the background material, evidence necessary and then formatting it for success. Paul was also regularly reachable. Unlike other family law attorneys who either do not use (or know how) to use email and return calls on a timely manner, Paul quickly replied to me particularly during a few urgent issues that arose related with my ex actions. Ultimately I had a good outcome on all matters related to my divorce. There were times we disagreed on approach and strategy, but ultimately he allowed me for my voice and desires to be heard in a way that would be effective in the court process. He also was a good human being and tried hard to reach out to opposing counsel to see is settlement was possible. I really felt he cared about me, my kids welfare, and getting to an end quickly and not just about getting fees from me. Speaking with my friends, I have found this rare. Overall a very strong and positive endorsement. I have referred both female and male friends who are going through a divorce to Paul. I have posted my name anonymously but am happy to speak to you if you want me if you want me to provide a direct reference.

I was really pleased with the service of Berstein Law APC. Thank you very much for the ordeal you took into hands and help me make the right decision. This law firm helped get through my business issues. Their attorneys are exceptional and give advice relating to business or business law anytime I call them. I recommend especially if you have business near Newport Beach and Huntington Beach.

I called different law firms and Berstein Law was the only firm I called that someone ( not an answering machine) actually answered my call. Within a short period of time, I consulted with one of the lawyers who was very professional and competent. Days after hiring Berstein Law, everything was resolved. Additionally, Bernstein Law kept my legal costs at a minimum. Without any reservation, I strongly recommend Berstein Law to anyone or any business seeking legal advice, help, and/or representation.

James Sweeney is unparalleled in his professional and easy-going handling of his cases, the meticulous research he engages with, and the drive to success in his cases. I can say that because he won my case. He aims to win and has the drive to follow it through to the end. If you need an attorney to go to bat for you, James Sweeney would be welcome on any team as a pinch hitter to get the job completed with everything given to that goal.

If you are ever in a tough bind, I would highly suggest Ashley Daniel as your Criminal Defense Attorney. With his previous experience working on the other side of the opposition as a District Attorney, he is able to view things holistically as other attorneys would lack experience in. In return, this would benefit the entire situation, whether or not the allegations are true. Ashley makes every effort to go above and beyond for you. He tries to help people genuinely by earning an honest living. His prices are reasonable to his scope of practice. His dedication is over the top with his clients and it shows in his tenacious approach. With that said, it is always best to consider an attorney who will listen to you as a friend and will provide you with the help you are in. Give him a call and I am sure it would not be regrettable.

Vanessa was assigned to my case and her and her team took care of everything. They made sure to communicate with me at every step and I can't say how much I appreciated it. My mother ended up getting into a car accident a few years later and I immediately reached out to Vanessa. I can't recommend them enough, they always get the job done!!

I would highly recommend Kalfayan Merjanian. They are there for you to help to answer any questions or just check in on how you are feeling. From day one until the closing of your case (5 years in my case) you have someone on your side. Thank you!

I was in a bad car accident last year and I was recommended to work with Kalfayan Merjanian and I’m glad I did. Getting into a car accident and all the aftermath of an accident is stressful, but working with this firm it made it all a breeze for me. They helped me find the medical care I needed and made appointments for me. Very communicative throughout the process. It was a pleasure working with everyone from this firm.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Newport Beach, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
