This review is long over due! Randy and Chris are absolutely AMAZING! Chris helped in the beginning process of some past things I needed to remove off my record. Then I met with Randy and he finished the rest.. we went to court and the judge and District attorney were familiar with Randy and agreed with him in removing my past case off my record and sealing it. I can’t thank Chris and Randy enough. God knows I’ve worked so hard to be where I am today and that was one last thing I needed to do to improve my life even more! Thank you so much and God Bless! Randy and Chris are #1 in my book. 🙌🙏👏💪

* Randy Collins is a threat, not the solution. * I cannot stress enough how awful my experience was with Randy Collins as my attorney. Despite boasting about his experience with federal cases, my new attorney confirmed that Collins had never actually tried one. Before becoming a defense attorney, Collins worked as a prosecutor, and it seemed to me that he transitioned to defense work to make more money with less responsibility, credibility, and actual stress. His previous experience as a prosecutor made me feel like he was prosecuting me instead of defending me. He was dishonest, disrespectful, and arrogant, showing zero regard for me as his client. Worse yet, he spent no meaningful time on my case, revealing his complete incompetence. I paid Collins thousands of dollars upfront to cover the pre-trial process, but after just a few short meetings, it became clear to me that he spent little to no time on my case outside of our meetings. He was completely disengaged, making assumptions without asking for essential facts or details about my business. He jumped to unrelated conclusions, and I had to force him to listen to my version of events and the critical details of my situation, which he frequently dismissed. During our last meeting, my wife, who was pregnant at the time, felt intense anxiety and fear after we were told that if I didn’t follow their advice, she could also be implicated in the sentencing. This created an extreme and distressing environment for both of us. One of the most absurd suggestions I received during our meetings was for me to claim mental illness as part of the defense strategy. I found it completely inappropriate and disconnected from the facts of my case. If I hadn’t fired him, I believe I could have ended up in prison due to his mishandling of my defense. Despite this, Collins refused to refund any of my money after I fired him. When I requested a refund, he sent me a ledger claiming he had already spent the time I paid for. However, based on his disengaged approach and the short timeframe, it was clear he hadn’t done the work he claimed. This isn’t my first attempt to post a review. After I posted my initial review, I was bombarded by messages and phone calls from Randy and his associates, urging me to resolve the issue “amicably.” I felt intimidated by this and removed my review. Only after consulting with legal professionals did I feel confident enough to voice my strong opinion, based on my factual experience—including my wife, who was scared for me to continue trusting Randy. If you're looking for an attorney who genuinely cares about his clients and has the experience and competence to back it up, steer clear of Randy Collins. He is an absolute disaster who will only bring you more trouble and stress in the long run. Best of luck in finding the right legal support.

I called Randy on Chris at the lowest time in mine and wife’s lives. The two of them put our minds at rest on a DAILY basis. They fought for us and kept us up to date on our case daily and even to the hour. Empathy and thoughtfulness is the only way I can describe these two. NEVER, did I call either one of them and them not pick up or call back within 20 minutes. I thought I was going to lose a felony charge and they took care of 100%. Done, Over. Call them, you won’t be sorry, you’ll be relieved.

I had an incredibly wonderful experience with Randy Collins office I was facing two charges. Randy was up front and let me know I was going to have to put in the work which I did and both my charges were dropped. Randy's team was always in communication with me and extremely helpful. I would recommend him to anybody in need of a lawyer. - Cabrina Blaylock

James Sweeney is unparalleled in his professional and easy-going handling of his cases, the meticulous research he engages with, and the drive to success in his cases. I can say that because he won my case. He aims to win and has the drive to follow it through to the end. If you need an attorney to go to bat for you, James Sweeney would be welcome on any team as a pinch hitter to get the job completed with everything given to that goal.

Mr. Sweeney is one of the smartest people I have ever met in my life. He knows the law better than I could imagine and was able to help me win 2 court cases with the background and knowledge he has learned throughout the years. A family friend recommended him to me and I am surely grateful to have him on my team. I recomend Mr. James Sweeney and know he is the #1 defence attorney in Orange County California

All I had was a traffic ticket, so I went online to ticket snipers to remove it and they failed and offered no way to fix the issue. Mr. Sweeney refilled and has given me a strategy that I can stand behind. I'll update my review when I win the case!

Vanessa was assigned to my case and her and her team took care of everything. They made sure to communicate with me at every step and I can't say how much I appreciated it. My mother ended up getting into a car accident a few years later and I immediately reached out to Vanessa. I can't recommend them enough, they always get the job done!!

I would highly recommend Kalfayan Merjanian. They are there for you to help to answer any questions or just check in on how you are feeling. From day one until the closing of your case (5 years in my case) you have someone on your side. Thank you!

I was in a bad car accident last year and I was recommended to work with Kalfayan Merjanian and I’m glad I did. Getting into a car accident and all the aftermath of an accident is stressful, but working with this firm it made it all a breeze for me. They helped me find the medical care I needed and made appointments for me. Very communicative throughout the process. It was a pleasure working with everyone from this firm.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Newport Beach, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
