I'm not sure who wrote all the reviews, on or around the same day, but their experience does not match my experience with Ms. Stiles at all. I found her to be a highly aggressive, win at all costs, attorney. Her win at all costs game plan almost destroyed my coparenting relationship with my ex. Let's face it, financial issues during a divorce are not easy but they should always be fair and as transparent as possible. I began to see my coparenting relationship deteriorate before my eyes with each strategically crafted correspondence between lawyers. The stress on my children, from the financial battle going on between their parents, was a heartbreaking experience to witness. My decision to finally seek another lawyer was the best decision I ever made. My stress level went down, my divorce got finalized, and I have an amazing coparenting relationship with my ex (I have to wonder if the other reviewers can say the same). I may not have gotten all the money out of my divorce that I possibly could have using Sheila Stiles and her firm, but I've got piece of mind in knowing that my kids will always know that I treated my ex with respect and fairness during a really difficult time.

I have nothing but accolades for Sheila Stiles. Sheila handled my divorce arbitration in 2013. I felt overwhelmed by the experience of divorce and Sheila was professional, courteous and supportive throughout. Her knowledge of the facts provided me the confidence I needed and the support that I wanted to reach amicable terms with my spouse. It was settled to the satisfaction of both parties. I have since reached out to her to answer questions that arise regarding my settlement. Her responses have always been timely and concise even though my case is several years old. I am grateful for her counsel and I highly recommend her.

Sheila truly put her whole heart into my convoluted "move away" case. It is evident that she is passionate not only about her work, but also about her clients. She worked fervently over months and months to ultimately win my case. Sheila is committed, enthusiastic, eager, knowledgable, personable and dependable. I am so grateful to have had Sheila represent me!

Let's face it, family law litigation sucks. It can be fraught with emotion and stress. There are also a lot of disingenuous family law lawyers out there who will say anything to get you to fork over a retainer and then bill you to no end while turning your file with little to no results. Sheila at BWBO is excellent. She provides great counseling and advice based upon thorough research. I've never seen such meticulous and organized representation. Unfortunately for me my X keeps taking me back to court so I have seen the inside of a courtroom on many occasions with Sheila. I will say this - she is always better prepared than opposing counsel and we have prevailed more often than not. Good representation is not cheap though so be prepared to spend a little more. However, cheap representation usually isn't very good so keep that in mind while shopping around. What you typically get with more expensive lawyers is incredible efficiency though so the higher rate may not necessarily translate into more money in the long run. The best advice I would give is to avoid going to court if at all possible and try hard to settle. If you have to go to court though, take Sheila with you...

Despite my very difficult divorce and custody battle lasting over 5 years, Sheila never gave up on me nor my children. She always fought for the best interest of my children, and would not settle for anything less. Sheila plays by the book, and does not leave any stones unturned. Sheila is someone you can trust and will always put your children's interest first. My children now have the opportunity for a bright future which they would not have had if Sheila was not on my team. My family and I will be forever grateful for her grit, and perseverance.

James Sweeney is unparalleled in his professional and easy-going handling of his cases, the meticulous research he engages with, and the drive to success in his cases. I can say that because he won my case. He aims to win and has the drive to follow it through to the end. If you need an attorney to go to bat for you, James Sweeney would be welcome on any team as a pinch hitter to get the job completed with everything given to that goal.

Mr. Sweeney is one of the smartest people I have ever met in my life. He knows the law better than I could imagine and was able to help me win 2 court cases with the background and knowledge he has learned throughout the years. A family friend recommended him to me and I am surely grateful to have him on my team. I recomend Mr. James Sweeney and know he is the #1 defence attorney in Orange County California

All I had was a traffic ticket, so I went online to ticket snipers to remove it and they failed and offered no way to fix the issue. Mr. Sweeney refilled and has given me a strategy that I can stand behind. I'll update my review when I win the case!

Vanessa was assigned to my case and her and her team took care of everything. They made sure to communicate with me at every step and I can't say how much I appreciated it. My mother ended up getting into a car accident a few years later and I immediately reached out to Vanessa. I can't recommend them enough, they always get the job done!!

I would highly recommend Kalfayan Merjanian. They are there for you to help to answer any questions or just check in on how you are feeling. From day one until the closing of your case (5 years in my case) you have someone on your side. Thank you!

I was in a bad car accident last year and I was recommended to work with Kalfayan Merjanian and I’m glad I did. Getting into a car accident and all the aftermath of an accident is stressful, but working with this firm it made it all a breeze for me. They helped me find the medical care I needed and made appointments for me. Very communicative throughout the process. It was a pleasure working with everyone from this firm.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Newport Beach, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
