I’m very pleased with my interaction with Benton Employment Law. Chambord was extremely responsive, asked great questions to understand my situation, and was patient with my inquiries. She was thorough and had a strong attention to detail. I highly recommend!

I wish I could give them negative stars, they keep on sending paperwork to my house for a person who never worked for me. I called them multiple times to tell them I don’t know any David Manchester, but still they keep on sending papers to house. I been trying to reach the attorney about this since December 2023. I spoke with Lauren on April 25 2024, she said she was going to look into and give me call back but she also hasn’t responded. Every time i call it goes to outside receptionist who doesn’t know anything, all they do is take my message, which I don’t know even know if it’s reaching the attorney or not.

I was referred to Ms. Benton-Hayes by a Defense Attorney with whom I went to college (undergrad). I contacted Ms. Benton-Hayes's firm and my experience was exceptional from the moment they answered the phone. Although I was able to speak with Ms. Benton-Hayes at that moment she called me back ten minutes after I hung the phone up from her assistant. Ms. Benton-Hayes gave me a wealth of Information. She understood my dilemma and gave me sound advice on how to proceed. I was pleasantly surprised and have kept her number. I recommend Ms. Benton-Hayes if you find yourself wrongfully terminated or in need of a great attorney!

I want to say thank you, thank you and thank you again to Benton Employment Law for returning my call when I was emotionally, physically and mentally at a low point with my employer. I would also like to personally thank Attorney Benton-Hayes for listening, understanding my situation and guiding me in the right direction. Because of her expertise in employment law, along with her experience and guidance, I was able to come out a winner in a situation that could have been detrimental for me. Without hesitation, I highly recommend Attorney Denton-Hayes. She is a class act.

Kim is an excellent, seasoned lawyer who tells it like it is-- but in a nice way. She is a leader with her own practice-- this experience and expertise in the field makes Kim a big fish, and she would do well to take on larger clients engaging in new or existing business or real estate transactions. I can tell she is committed to honoring her humanitarian values when doing business: Scala is generous and cares about the people behind the deal and making sure that the agreement works out for everyone involved. She advised me on engaging in a new business venture and I couldn't be more happy with her response and our interaction. Kim also was a small business owner herself-- so she understands the legality of an endeavor but also the other intangible rewards that make us entrepreneurs. Highly recommended for general business counsel, contracts law, strategic advising, real estate.

Attorney Martin was extremely caring and extremely transparent in times where I felt the world was ending for my specific case. Constant communication, weekly updates, always ensuring we asked questions and every question is answered with the utmost detail. I couldn’t have asked for any better attorney to represent me. From start to finish and despite the length of our specific case , she always made sure to keep me in the loop to ensure we obtain the best outcome and I can’t emphasize on the transparency. No false promises , but concrete results. I didn’t picture myself where I am currently as I’m writing this post if it wasn’t for Attorney Martin, I am eternally grateful for the hard work put in to getting me back on my feet and allowing me to feel human despite mistakes that can occur as we journey through life. Thank you so much Attorney Martin. A super lawyer indeed!

Long story short, Manjula is a great lawyer. She communicates with you on your case, she'll tell you exactly what to do. My first DUI offense was waived down to a wet and reckless. The second offense was dismissed. I highly recommend her if you get in a bind.

2020 and covid led me to drink and drive and I ended up getting arrested during the holidays. I called Oakland DUI Attorneys and it was the best decision. I'm also glad I called right when I was released from Santa Rita jail because many attorneys didn't answer their phones because of the holidays but this DUI lawyer was free to talk and within 30 minutes of being on the phone with them, I ended hiring them. They are on top of their game when it comes to making sure you understand what the next steps are. This place is five stars for sure.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Oakland, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
