I called Mr. Castillo for a consultation regarding an ongoing case of a family member facing serious charges. Mr. Castillo took the time to explain different scenarios and provided his very honest prespective about the case. I've consulted with other attorney's who only tell you what you want to hear in order to make business. Mr. Castillo is very knowledgeable and was highly recommend. It's unfortunate that i didn't find him much much earlier. Thanks again Mr. Castillo!

Mr Castillo represented me on a criminal case in which I was falsely accused in 2012. He took over the case from a previous lawyer who was less aggressive and not actively pursing my defense. Mr Castillo is a confident, aggressive and very persistent lawyer. He kept my family and I up to date on the case and also returned our calls on time. Mr Castillo persuaded me not to take any deal and wanted take the case to trial because he was confident that he would win. With the Lord's guidance and Ernie's aggressiveness my case was dismissed. I would highly recommend Mr Castillo to anyone.

Mr. Castillo has been "representing" us for the last year, and at first, seemed like he'd be up to the challenge to take on a case that was messed up completely by a previous lawyer. But, it turns out, he's just like the rest of the attorneys; simply trying to take your money. Why would someone take on a case knowing from the start that he wouldn't be able to do anything about it? Just to tell us at the end to take the "deal". We did not need to pay large sums of money to come to a conclusion of having to take the "deal". Please, beware when dealing with him. In addition to all of this, he RARELY ever returns any calls, texts, emails...ever! You call him, and he texts back after a period of time and says he will call later that day, only to remain waiting for the call 2 weeks later. Very poor communication. We thought we could trust him, but like the first attorney, we were wrong. Did a very poor job at informing us of things.

Mr. Castillo just finished a year plus, defense of myself, (case 219094, city of fremont Ca) in which he protected my rites the entire way up to and through, my NOT GUILTY verdict arrived at in a record fashion, 30 minute deliberation by the jury, whilst impeaching witness after witness, as well as using the arresting police offer to help in that impeachment of said witness'. He did such an excellent job that I did not even have testify, nor did we offer a defense. His closing arguements were spot on and thourogh. His battle plan and decision making prowess was second to none. His tanacity in approach as well as overall preformance left no doubt and I, not much of a computer guy, but having used this web page to preruse lawyer ratings, was impressed enough to return to offer this rating of him for your information, and to update the overall rating a new, with this evidence to add to what you have already. I would rehire Ernie in a heartbeat but of course hope I will never have the need again. : ) Please give him your full attention and send this rating of 5.9 you currently have, to a rating of at the very least a 7+. sincere thanks.....Michael Kilmer age 59, a free man with a good reputation still in tact thanks to Mr. Castillo.

Kim is an excellent, seasoned lawyer who tells it like it is-- but in a nice way. She is a leader with her own practice-- this experience and expertise in the field makes Kim a big fish, and she would do well to take on larger clients engaging in new or existing business or real estate transactions. I can tell she is committed to honoring her humanitarian values when doing business: Scala is generous and cares about the people behind the deal and making sure that the agreement works out for everyone involved. She advised me on engaging in a new business venture and I couldn't be more happy with her response and our interaction. Kim also was a small business owner herself-- so she understands the legality of an endeavor but also the other intangible rewards that make us entrepreneurs. Highly recommended for general business counsel, contracts law, strategic advising, real estate.

Attorney Martin was extremely caring and extremely transparent in times where I felt the world was ending for my specific case. Constant communication, weekly updates, always ensuring we asked questions and every question is answered with the utmost detail. I couldn’t have asked for any better attorney to represent me. From start to finish and despite the length of our specific case , she always made sure to keep me in the loop to ensure we obtain the best outcome and I can’t emphasize on the transparency. No false promises , but concrete results. I didn’t picture myself where I am currently as I’m writing this post if it wasn’t for Attorney Martin, I am eternally grateful for the hard work put in to getting me back on my feet and allowing me to feel human despite mistakes that can occur as we journey through life. Thank you so much Attorney Martin. A super lawyer indeed!

Long story short, Manjula is a great lawyer. She communicates with you on your case, she'll tell you exactly what to do. My first DUI offense was waived down to a wet and reckless. The second offense was dismissed. I highly recommend her if you get in a bind.

2020 and covid led me to drink and drive and I ended up getting arrested during the holidays. I called Oakland DUI Attorneys and it was the best decision. I'm also glad I called right when I was released from Santa Rita jail because many attorneys didn't answer their phones because of the holidays but this DUI lawyer was free to talk and within 30 minutes of being on the phone with them, I ended hiring them. They are on top of their game when it comes to making sure you understand what the next steps are. This place is five stars for sure.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Oakland, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
