Matt Mushet has done work for me on several occasions, filing two trademarks for my company and also advising on several intellectual property issues regarding patenting dietary supplement formulations. His experience and knowledge have been invaluable, and his customer service in working with his client (me) made working together effortless. I highly recommend Matt Mushet for your IP needs.

I was looking for a patent lawyer to protect my invention. Matt was recommended to me by a friend and after working with him i know why. He has a lot of advice and knowledge about the patent process. He is also easy to talk to and provides a great overall experience. If i need a patent attorney again, i would definitely use him or recommend him to a friend.

Matt was very helpful at a time when life was a bit chaotic. He is very calm and great listener. Other lawyers I have dealt with seem to be short and all-business. Matt was both friendly and helpful. You don't need to hire arrogant 'bull dog' lawyer to fight your battles. Matt Mushet will fight hard for your case, but he is very easy to talk to and has proven to be a person you can trust.

Mr. Mushet was one of the most professional patent attorneys I've met and had great prices for his work. He's extremely knowledgeable and was very upfront and gave me several tips about areas I had not thought about before. I originally came to him for a US utility patent, which he was able to help me with and file, and have since gotten 2 federal trademarks and a copyright.

Mr. Mushet was very responsive to my needs. He seemed to understand my urgency and respected me being somewhat demanding. I was pleased to find that he could do this and deliver the product at a reasonable price, which also speaks loudly to me. I have referred Mr. Mushet to other contacts and per their report, he has done an outstanding job on their patents and trademarks. Bottom line, I will undoubtedly utilize Mr. Mushet again.

Chris worked patiently with me to help me compose a great property trust. He pointed out all sorts of important considerations and gave his professional opinion, but left every decision up to me. After drawing up the document he met with me and reviewed every provision thoroughly. This was a very professional effort and I deeply appreciated it.

Absolutely the best! They took the case in an emergency situation, explained everything in detail and how it all works kept me in the loop at all times. Everything worked out just the way they explained. I can’t thank them enough for everything they have done for me and my family. Highly recommend them to everyone!!

Had the opportunity to work with Ms. Lisbette Baltazar, Ms. Baltazar provided the ideal support that you would expect from a big firm. Ms. Baltazar explained the process and made sure we understood everything. I believe Ms. Baltazar and her partner Ms. Sanchez are on to something good here, I can’t wait to see what else they accomplish. They both work well together, put their clients first, and make sure they are doing what’s in best interest of their client, without charging an arm and leg. Thank you Ms. Sanchez.

I was skeptical at hiring a law firm following a car accident. I'd never believed in "personal injury" lawyers, in fact, I spoke with 3 other law firms prior to hiring Harris Personal Injury Law Firm. Frankly, it was the best decision I've ever made and I have a whole new respect for this profession. From the consultation with Jeff, to the many phone calls with Isabel, and finally to talking with Derek, I was treated with kindness, understanding and consideration. At the conclusion of my case (2 years), Derek patiently explained how the insurance claim would be handled, thru his expertise he was able to reduce my medical bills and what I thought was an impossible situation turned out to be blessing. There are not enough words to describe how grateful I am for the care I received from Isabel and Derek, they lifted me up and helped me through a very difficult time in my life due to a car accident. I would highly recommend Derek and Harris Law Firm.

I found Derek to be engaging and honest from the moment he began representing my interests. He was responsive and direct in answering any and all questions i had about my case. This is what i would expect from a very good lawyer. Derek ended up exceeding my expectations in resolving my case. I do not have a lot of experience to judge what qualities a great lawyer would have, but i would happily endorse Derek's capabilities in that regard.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Oceanside, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
