In the past I've had a few less than perfect family law experiences. In my mind, James Casey reset those standards and set the bar high. I had called multiple lawyers initially most of which seemed annoyed of the time I was taking and the questions I was asking. James was quick, efficient and personable. He guided me through a mostly unfamiliar process with ease. Cost and payment was fair and flexible. Results of the case were exactly what we expected. I would recommend James to anyone.

I would highly recommend Mr. Casey he is a very professional and honest attorney. It really shows that he cares about the outcome of each and every persons case. Excellent communication whether it be through email or in person he takes the time to answer any and all questions and fully inform you about what options you have with your case. He was appointed my CDA for a case recently and i lucked out because i couldn't be happier with the results and he was able to get my criminal case dismissed.

James is THE MAN!! Couldn't have been happier to have him representing me. I lucked into getting him assigned to my case. There was a "conflict" with the public defender, and he was assigned to my case as a "Conflict Attorney." From the get go, he was excellent at communication. He listens, gives his honest opinion, adds value and is 100% intent on getting you the best possible resolution for your case. Coming off a horrible experience with my last case/trial, this was quite a refreshing change and, I believe, how a lawyer/client relationship should work. He was attentive to my needs, receptive to my feedback and together we developed a sound approach to our plea. He was honest and direct that there was a very low likelihood of winning the case, if we went to trial. So after reviewing the discovery, and all the work I had put in on my recovery to date we went back to the judge and he gave a better offer. Then, we tried a couple new things and got an even better offer, the second time around (from a very unforgiving judge), which I was very happy with and ultimately took. Most lawyers pretend like they're actually listening to you but are distracted and aren't actually listening. But he actually listens. He's also available at all reasonable hours during the day, when you need advice or to bounce thoughts off him, and if he isn't, he'll arrange a better time to talk. He was a whiz in the Ventura County court room. He knows the people, the judge, the system and exactly which buttons to push. Above all else, he is very nice and approachable and a true advocate for you, and that makes the entire process (which is already very difficult) so much less stressful and overwhelming. I cannot recommend James and his services highly enough.

James Casey acted as our medator in our divorce. He was very professional and guided us though this trying time. He made everything much smoother than if we had hired an attorney to represent each side.

Mathew Auric was extremely easy and reliable to work with. He took the time to understand what I wanted in an agreement during the free consultation, and kept subsequent emails short and simple. He also made sure to turn over every stone and thought outside the box for me. This was my first time contracting a lawyer for drafting an agreement, and he made the process easy to understand. I highly recommend Mathew Auric.

As a fairly new business owner, I have felt extremely fortunate to have Matt Auric as my attorney. He is a wealth of information and has been able to assist me in both business related contracts and personal matters. He is very knowledgeable and articulate and thoroughly explains all details to help you make educated and wise decisions. I would highly recommend Matt to anyone needing legal assistance of this nature. I find him to be an honest and kind person in addition to being on top of it.

My case had been assigned a couple different attorneys at this large firm. I felt lost and alone until Steve took over my case. He spoke to me with honesty and sincerity. After meeting him the first time I knew I was in good hands and that whatever happened, it was the best I could hope for. He made me feel like he genuinely cares.

Mr McElroy was an amazing litigator. He stood by our side the whole time. He is very intelligent, and has a way with words. He was able to captivate the courtroom and was able to be likeable, sympathetic, clear and relatable, and could be a pit bull when push came to shove. He has definitely made a difference in our lives, and I doubt we would have achieved such a positive outcome had we not had Steve fighting for us.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Ojai, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
