I did a considerable amount of attorney shopping for my divorce case and finally got a referral Mr. Haslam's office. He and his staff were very attentive to every one of my needs, explaining all of my documents in detail, and always answering my questions completely. I went through a very difficult high conflict custody case that did not seem it would ever end before I hired his firm. Because of his vast knowledge, hard work, and respect by not only other Attorneys but local Judges, was able to receive great Orders in my case. I would recommend Haslam & Thorne to anyone who is involved in a family law case.

I have no respect for Mr. Haslam. My divorce was handled very poorly. I sadly regret ever meeting him. I paid thousands and I lost thousands. My ex-husband's lawyer ruled the day and he made out like a bandit. It is my opinion that you should have nothing to do with Mr. Haslam...ever.

I had the worst experience with this attorney. He was not up to date on the latest in family law and seemed to be "skating by" as he drifts off into retirement. He forgot details and over-billed me. He kept repeating a case he worked on 20 years ago that made not impact on my case and it was like he was trying to sell himself using a has-been case that was so old. it took him forever to respond to phone calls. He is not up to date on the latest technology.

I spent 30k over two years and still do not have custody of my kids or child support. I only got a bifurcation because I had a fit that I had spent so much money and nothing to show for it. He had to do the bifurcation twice because the proper forms were not filled out the first time. Charges $500/hour and that adds up really fast and when all is said and done NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. I think all of these family law attorneys are in cahoots to cause inter fighting to string the case as long as possible. Do yourself a favor and before you both go bankrupt go to mediation services where you are equally represented by one person who helps you form an agreement. Nobody wins except the attorneys!

I hired Mr. Haslam after researching Family Law Attorneys in the San Bernardino County area. The Avvo ratings coupled with his experience in the field led to my selection. This turned out to be a horrible selection. Mr. Haslam charges $500 an hour for doing minimal work. Mr. Haslam offered very little, if any, guidance in the process. I was rarely kept informed on my case status and was charged for anything/everything! Mr. Haslam showed up for one hearing and fielded out others without giving me a heads up. This experience is one I wish upon no one.

I wanted to write and let everyone know if they need a lawyer this is the best one you will ever find. I am sure her law firm is as great as Susan Grabarsky is. They helped me get a UNUM long term disability denial reversed, then they helped me avioid another denial years later. My attorney, Susan Grabarsky, even helped me get together documents for another legal problem, at NO CHARGE. More than a year after our retainer ended. I can still call them up anytime for help. They really care about their disabled clients. It is so nice to know that Lawyers like this are so real and have the clients in there best interest. I cant say enough how they really care:-)

Top Notch, Class act, professional, I can't say enough kind things about Susan Grabarsky at Darras Law. She is extremely knowledgeable in Disability Law and compassionate towards a person's circumstances. We were dealing with a life and death situation, and she guided us every step of the way on how to handle the insurance disability as well as our employer. We did not know what to do, and she took her time in a FREE consultation to outline each step to take. I highly recommend this company; especially Susan if you need help with a Disability situation. This is their specialty, so I would not go anywhere else! Nancy

I can't express how grateful we are to Frank Darras for the attention and time he gave us when consulting on our disability case. Not only did he walk us through the process, he did so with generosity, patience, and a rare mix of shrewdness and positive attitude. Thank you Frank - you are a rare ray of sunshine in the highly contentious arena!

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Ontario, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
