We hired Loni for a very complicated and stressful case. Her experience was extremely valuable in so many ways. In particular, it was a VERY emotional case for us and Loni helped us keep the proper focus when our emotions took us off course. She is extremely patient when listening to her clients. In our case, Loni appeared to be very respected by the Judge. She is skilled at negotiating, as well as litigation. Our daughter decided we were trying to steal her child and hired an attorney and fought the Guardianship. We had raised our grandson and he had lived with us since 5 weeks old, and is now 2 1/2. Our daughters alcohol addiction and the fathers criminal past and inability to support our grandson necessitated our request for Guardianship. We now have General Guardianship of our grandson, and are FOREVER grateful to Loni and her staff.

I hired Loni to file for emergency guardianship of our nephew. It was a complicated case and our family was a wreck. Loni was amazing - she is one of the most empathetic people I have ever met. Her work was exceptional. She is a very skilled litigator. The other party ended up assenting to the guardianship - due to the strength of the case that Loni put together. The negotiation was intense, but Loni kept us calm and focused. It is rare to find an attorney that is equally good at litigating and negotiating but Loni excels at both. I will always be grateful for her help during one of the hardest times in my life.

We were referred to Loni Klein and Sheryl Edgar by another respected family law attorney we consulted with. She believed our case required an attorney who specialized in areas of the law that protect children in dangerous situations. Our case resulted in our being able to adopt and forever protect the child. It was the BEST POSSIBLE ruling and we are grateful to Loni and her team.

Loni was appointed to represent my son, I did not have representation of my own at the time I met her. I can honestly say, without a shadow of doubt in my mind, that this woman had what was the best for my son in the forefront of her mind at all times. It was obvious that Loni was very well respected by, not only by the Judge that chose her for my son, but by her peers in the passing hallways and in just observing her. I was able to retain representation of my own, and with the two of them working on the one common goal for my child, I knew we were in, more than, capable hands. My son, of course, had to have meetings with his lawyer and conversations, and at one point had to come in to interview with the judge (every mothers fear) and Loni made him feel very safe. He liked her a lot. She went out of her way to meet with him in the court house to go over what to expect, and to view the court room, so that he would not be caught off guard or more nervous than necessary when the time of his testimony came. Although I could not be in the room when he spoke his truth, I know he felt safe being honest because Loni was there with him. I must also say, that in her cross examination of the parties I was fully impressed by her delivery and her way of getting the truth out, even when some people were being difficult or dishonest. She was extremely professional throughout the entire process and to the very end of this rollercoaster. At times I was nervous and worried about the outcome, but she never wavered in her security in herself to get the necessary outcome for my son, which in turn gave me the confidence I was lacking in my times of need. Loni was truly a blessing sent from something greater, to wrap her arms around my case (my son), and to help us obtain our long awaited freedom. I am forever grateful to her for everything, and I cannot say enough thank yous'. I just hope she knows how much she meant to the both of us.

Loni Klein was my attorney for an incredibly difficult, complex case involving the best interests of my children. The case ultimately ended in a ten day trial. The case and trial was emotionally and mentally the most difficult thing I have ever endured, and I don't think I could have made it through without the assistance of Loni Klein and her team. We recently found out the judgement in the trial, and it was in my favor. I couldn't have asked for a more prepared, passionate and articulate lawyer. She was always clear about what was going to happen and the things she needed from me to get us to our final positive outcome. Her knowledge of the law and ability to fight for me went beyond my expectations. She is still my attorney on another matter before the court, and I feel confident that I have the best possible lawyer to represent me. Anyone who retains her as an attorney will be in great hands.

Patrick is absolutely amazing. He is efficient and very responsive to inquiries. You can call him or text and he’ll get back to you the same day! He assisted my husband with a case regarding a suspended license and got it taken care of without him ever having to go to court. He appeared on my husband’s behalf. He even gave some great advice regarding an inquiry that he wasn’t retained for. Great attorney. Highly recommend.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Orange, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
