In my past jobs, I have always worked with corporate legal counsels, but have never thought that I would need representation on a personal level regarding estate trust concerns. In my first meeting with Andy, he was extremely thorough in explaining the potential situations that could arise and possible positions to be taken, which I appreciated very much. Also, throughout this process, Andy was very responsive to situations that came up. In addition, he always communicated to me when he was out of the office handling another case, but would always be available if required. If you need an attorney knowledgeable about estate trust questions/concerns, I would highly recommend Andy.

Over the last ten years I have been increasingly involved in my father's estate, which is large, diverse and presents many business and legal issues. Over that period I have met, worked with, been opposed by, hired and fired several attorneys and firms in various areas of practice. I hired Andrew Verriere as a litigator to defend my father's estate plans in court. While we have not yet concluded the action, I am very confident in my choice of Mr. Verriere. He has been great at keeping me informed, understanding and answering my questions, and being promptly available. He has also shown his knowledge and abilities with the law, arguing persuasively and so far, prevailing in cutting edge legal matters. On one occasion, Mr. Verriere respectfully presented an argument resulting in a favorable reversal of the Judge's preliminary ruling. Later, outside court a random lawyer came by to say "nice job" to Mr. Verriere. Not something that happens every day in my experience. Mr. Verriere' s firm Hartog, Baer & Hand, and principal Mr. David Baer have also been supportive and helpful to his efforts on my behalf. I am very pleased with the decision to hire Mr. Andrew Verriere, and would recommend him and his firm to others.

Actually for me the name "Andrew Verriere" brings back some emotional memories. Years ago my father passed, we were very very close, but unfortunately there was little time to grieve for me or my family. His wife and her shady attorney decided that they didn't like the prenuptial agreement she had signed or the family Trust that had both been in place for many years. I had a lot on my plate; Calming siblings and reassuring them that the Trust would be defended. I hire Mr. Verriere. Truth be told... At first I wasn't sure if I had pick the right attorney. I thought maybe he was a bit mild-mannered and of course he was much younger then, I thought that might be an issue, I had the world on my shoulders and I remember we got in a couple of minor spats. But, I liked the way he explained the process and shared his strategy with me. We talked and emailed A LOT, so I stayed the course. After many months trial day finally came. Wow! I never have seen any attorney so prepare. He made mincemeat out of the plaintiff and opposition witness. My thought of him being too mild-mannered went out the window. And the opposing lawyer seemed less and less confident (cocky) as the day went on. Midway though the trial every person in the court room knew which way things were going and which lawyer they would want on their side. Of course we (he) won the day. And as I look back on it now, hiring and staying with Mr. Verriere was one of first and proudest choices I had to make in those really tough times. I'm still proud of myself for it.

Mr. Verriere was my attorney on a very difficult trust litigation involving the death of my son. He helped immensely in getting the trustee to finalize and close out my son's trust for distribution. It was a very painful time in my life, and he handled himself not just professionally, but with compassion and support in regard to the loss of our son. He even made a couple of house calls in order to accommodate my schedule and to keep things moving forward for us. He was honest, and I would trust him to represent me again, should I ever need a probate attorney in the future.

Andrew Verriere had represented my cousin. She had a very difficult case concerning her parents estate. Her brother made it very difficult for everyone involved. Andrew worked the case along with another lawyer. Andrew Verriere gave the closing statements in the trial. He was so professional and his wording is what helped my cousin win her case. I live 2 hours away from Andrew. He is the lawyer you want on your side! Verriere law firm. I would hire him for ANYTHING. He is wonderful!!!!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Orinda, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
