My contract dispute began in CA. Mr. Tator has made it possible for me to afford his services. I found and retained Mr. Tator as my attorney from out of state. Even so Mr. Tator and his staff have handled my case professionally, efficiently, cordially. Mr. Tator's expertise is second to none. MR. TATOR HAS SET A PRECEDENT WITH MY CASE. I am extremely satisfied with Mr. Tator's services. Mr. Tator and staff deserve the highest rating score possible. I wish he was an attorney in my state of residence. He has kept my best interests at heart and works very hard to get me the best results. He always keeps me posted and is quick to respond to all my inquiries and in a manner that I understand. I have an attorney I know I can count on to do all the right things for me.

It has been nearly four years since the wrongful death of our daughter that occurred as a result of a terrible bus accident. I want to thank attorney Mark Hiepler and let him know that I saw the love of God in his work and that of his entire staff who worked so tirelessly on behalf of our family and my daughter's children. When we were referred to Hiepler & Hiepler, we had interviewed a number of large Los Angeles area law firms that each showed great promise. However, we chose Hiepler & Hiepler because Mark stood out in his commitment to his sister and his abilities to look at our cause. We never fell through the cracks and got excellent personal attention. We saw the firm's determination in leaving no stone unturned in their preparation. Mark reached out to us in our hurt, our emptiness and our grief. We felt that we became a part of the Hiepler family. The numbers of cases Hiepler & Hiepler had won were impressive but they were not comparable to the determination and encouragement they displayed to me and my entire family. Mark and his firm, once again, won the case through the eyes of the law and, in the process, won our hearts through their diligence and compassion.

Greg May reviewed my case dismissed on summary judgment, gave me an honest assessment of its merits, the risks, and proceeded to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. His research was thorough but efficient; the resulting briefs read like a conversation between legal scholars, and the quality of his work was even commented on by the Court. The result was a stunning reversal. On any level of what a client expects in professional representation I could not make a higher recommendation.

Greg has helped me with 5 cases in the past couple years and I have hit home runs each time. The first of these was a business/employment dispute which I was successful in trial. The defendants appealed, and we in turn also appealed the attorneys fees portion of the case. Greg wrote our appeal and the opposition to their appeal. He is meticulous, well reasoned, and for me 100% successful. He argued our case on appeal. We won on our opposition and we won on our attorneys fees appeal which was remanded to trial court and the fees multiplied as a result. Greg helped us on two Employment MSJ oppositions, both of which were successful...One in federal court, and one in state court. Both cases were later settled in large part due to the quality of Greg's arguments. The fourth case in which I received Greg's assistance was an appeal on a trial in which we were successful against one Defendant and unsuccessful against a second - premises liability case. After Greg's thorough briefing on appeal, the respondents called us to settle and gave us everything we requested on appeal plus interest and appellate costs. Finally, we have one more case pending in appellate court. In this employment case, our case was dismissed out of state court. We appealed using Greg as our appellate counsel. The opposition was so weak that we didn't bother to reply and are currently awaiting argument to be set. I cannot recommend Greg enough. He is amazing. Smart. Thorough. My not so secret weapon to success in difficult situations!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Oxnard, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
