The only family law attorney you will need! Divorce can be extremely stressful but with the help and guidance of Mr. Prieto the process was as smooth as possible. He was honest, timely, knowledgeable and compassionate. He assisted us with completing a joint agreement and avoiding lengthy and expensive proceedings.

I was recently looking for an attorney and contacted Mr. Prieto. He was very honest and was realistic with me about my case. Anytime I sent him an email he replied in a timely manner. I think many people have unrealistic expectations of attorneys and what they are capable of doing. He was upfront and realistic with me about my case from the moment I met him. I was very thankful for his effort and time which he gave my case. He isn’t like one of those big firms which you feel like your case gets lost in the shuffle! He deals with you directly. Thanks again Mr. Prieto!

I hired Mr Prieto after his “boss” Sheila Williams recommended him very, very highly. That was my first mistake Between not informing me of a summons that was sent to his office, not telling me about the hearing he was attending in my behalf, I learned quickly communication is not this guys strong point. But after we received the initial offer on the settlement, which was piss poor, I learned that Mr Prieto sat on his hands and ignored my file for 4 months. Don’t even think about hiring this man.

It seemed as if my lawyer had his best interests before my own. Shady on delivering paperwork, shady on keeping in contact, coerced me into signing an I'll written statement he wrote on my behalf.

We brought an interesting case to Mr. Darrin that required him to be extremely methodical and creative throughout the process. Mr. Darrin navigated the complexity of the case as a seasoned professional. Not only did we prevent the defendant from walking away with all of our money, we controlled the disbursement of funds that were held in escrow until we came to a full and mutually beneficial resolution. I’d highly recommend Mr. Darrin for Real Estate and Business matters.

I am currently working with Mr. Darrin on a case where locating a participating partner has been very difficult. Although we have not made definitive contact yet, we are working on several excellent leads thanks to the work of Mr. Darrin and his supporting team of experts. I am optimistic we will reach a satisfactory conclusion to this case very soon. Regardless of the eventual outcome, the process of working with Mr. Darrin has been delightful, very professional, and most congenial with excellent progress to date. I recommend Mr. Darrin very highly and would work with him without hesitation should the need arise.

6/12/13 My sister and I were very interested in starting our own restaurant. The idea of setting up the business was intimidating to say the least. After retaining David as our attorney all of our apprehension disappeared. He covered the different ways of setting up our business explaining the advantages of going with a Limited Liability Company (LLC) in easy to understand terms, keeping us informed every step of the way. I’m very impressed with his accessibility; I can contact him any time, either by phone or email. David handles himself in a very professional manner, always giving sound advice. And his services are very reasonably priced. Moving forward, I will continue to seek David’s legal advice.

I contacted Vanessa and she responded right away. She let me know she was not currently accepting new clients but helped me find others who were. She was very courteous and professional.

Maureen has prepared loan documentation involving some of the most complex real estate secured, franchise based loans. She is exceptional at spotting title issues and potential issues that may arise in collateral foreclosures or borrower bankruptcy filings. I have personally worked with attorneys at prominent San Francisco and Silicon Valley law firms on complicated creditor and real property issues. Maureen takes a back seat to none.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Palm Springs, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
