Very impressed with Elizabeth Munro, Grace A. and the rest of the Vanguard staff. Very open and honest regarding the specifics of my case, including how long it would likely take. No unrealistic expectations here, rather quite matter of fact regarding approach to the case and expected outcomes. Explained legal process clearly and answered every question I had in a timely manner. Grace is a rock star, keeping all the details and paperwork straight. Much better outcome than I expected. Very pleased.

I really can't say enough about Ms. Munro and the Vanguard team. They are on point! When something happens to you as traumatic as an accident you want to make sure your attorney has your family's and your back. She was very responsive and addressed questions and concerns promptly and professionally. My questions and concerns were not relayed from an assistant she addressed them. I really felt she was looking out for me and family's best interest. She's definitely the type of lawyer you need when there's so many things going through your mind after a life altering situation.

I worked with Meyer Law on a project based in Chicago several years ago. I'm really happy to hear they're expanding to California, as Tricia and Melody were absolutely amazing to work with. They were always very informative and easy to communicate with - traits that are paramount to find in your attorneys, yet not always easy to find. Their influence was invaluable in the early part of my entrepreneurial journey, as I felt that I received not only well more than my money's worth in legal services, but an education in some very fundamental entrepreneurial principles. I'll always be grateful.

The attorneys at Sally Morin are excellent. While walking in a crosswalk with a "WALK" light flashing, my elderly mother was struck by a vehicle. My mother suffered a broken leg, along with other superficial injuries. After nearly 1.5 years of physical therapy, my mother is now able to walk reasonably normally, although much of the damage is permanent. We engaged Sally Morin's lawyers to handle the claim. The attorneys and staff have extensive experience handling pedestrian-vehicle injury claims. The entire staff, including attorneys and paralegals, are all very competent and professional. All my mother was tasked to do was to keep the attorneys apprised of her recovery (e.g., appointments, outcomes, tests, test results, etc.), keep track of payments for items purchased to promote her recovery and/or to allow her to live in a house with limited mobility (e.g., wheelchair rental, crutches, bathroom modifications, exercise bicycle, braces), and to provide relevant documents (e.g., receipts, insurance documents). When the dust finally settleed, we were able to obtain the maximum settlement amount, based on the policy limits of the driver. As an attorney myself, I wanted to make sure that my elderly mother was represented by attorneys who are experts in their fields, and who are thorough and detail-oriented. I found this in Sally Morin's attorneys. In particular, Annie Levitt Heller was excellent. She answered all of our questions and helped guide us through this unfamiliar process, to secure an excellent outcome for my family. In case of any personal injury, I would wholeheartedly, and without reservation, recommend the attorneys at Sally Morin Law.

Annie Heller is perfection! I was referred to Annie by an attorney in my office and knew from the moment I first spoke with her that she would be the right person for the job. I spoke with her many times prior to initiating litigation and each time she took a lot of time to explain the process. After litigation was initiated, she kept me apprised of everything that was going on with my case. I never had to ask for a status of my case because she always provided me with updates. My case settled during mediation. She worked very hard and the end result was much more than I had anticipated. She is passionate about her job, meticulous with her work product and gives her undivided attention to her clients. I would give her 10 stars if I could and would recommend her to anyone looking for a "gold star" personal injury lawyer. The all female team at this firm is exceptional.

I cannot recommend Annie from Sally Morin enough. Not only is she extremely personable, but her communication with me throughout the entire process was above and beyond what I would have ever expected. She is so profession and passionate about what she does. 10/10 experience, would rate higher if I could!

Linda represented us for over 7 years in complex, multinational deals as well as more day-to-day matters (production financing, talent negotiations, and some general corporate and commercial). Her advice was always smart, pragmatic, and clear (as a busy GC , I didn't have any hesitation in having her deal directly with my C-suite execs). She left private practice and we miss having her in our court.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Playa Vista, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
