I worked with Meyer Law on a project based in Chicago several years ago. I'm really happy to hear they're expanding to California, as Tricia and Melody were absolutely amazing to work with. They were always very informative and easy to communicate with - traits that are paramount to find in your attorneys, yet not always easy to find. Their influence was invaluable in the early part of my entrepreneurial journey, as I felt that I received not only well more than my money's worth in legal services, but an education in some very fundamental entrepreneurial principles. I'll always be grateful.

I have been working with Meyer Law Group for the past four years, and their service has been exceptional. This women-led law firm has managed all legal and protection aspects of my business with remarkable expertise and efficiency. Their responsiveness and thorough understanding of the legal landscape have provided me with immense peace of mind. As a fellow woman entrepreneur, it’s incredibly rewarding to work with a team that not only excels in their field but also supports and uplifts women in business. Meyer Law's commitment and professionalism are truly outstanding, and I highly recommend their services to any business in need of reliable legal support.

I was referred to Meyer Law Group, and they have been with me for most of the 6 years I've been bootstrapping LI2EI. I can say without hesitation, they are without a doubt one of the main reasons I am still able to pursue my dream. My focus is the futures of children, and I am not built nor interested to understand the intricacies of business law ESPECIALLY in California. I could not be more thankful for everything this talented group of women has done for me.

I retained Catherine while I was being unfairly pushed out of my Fortune 500 company and I’m so glad I did! Catherine was urgent, empathetic, knowledgeable, honest and very detailed. She took the time to really understand my complex case and it resulted in me keeping my job longer than I would have. She also negotiated a severance for me that the company originally was not going to grant. If it wasn’t for her, I would’ve been unfairly fired with no extra money in my pocket. Instead, my company and I reached a mutually acceptable agreement and I walked away with my head held high. She really got me some justice and I’m so grateful I retained her. To reiterate, Catherine and I took on the task of going up against a large company to prove retaliation/mistreatment. It was no easy task to take on the “big bully” but Catherine succeeded for me. During this stressful time, Catherine was also a great coach and therapist for me, as she kept me focused on the prize, especially when things were getting overwhelming for me still working in a toxic environment. Overall, I’m very grateful for Catherine coming in and being a great ally with me. I highly recommend her!

Working with Peter Vittas is a pleasure. I am so happy to have found such a personable lawyer online. His fees are very reasonable and he is very generous with his time. Each time I met with Peter, my stress level decreased. He made the process of creating my will, trust and other documents as easy as possible. I highly recommend Peter Vittas.

Peter made the process so easy and efficient for us. Everything was done online and he held our hands every step of the way. He is very thorough and professional with attention to detail. This was my first time doing this and I expected to be sitting in a lawyer’s office for hours with the billing clock running. Not with Peter! I am a retired computer consultant and I appreciate having a proven process to drive complex problems to satisfactory conclusions and that’s how Peter does it.

Linda represented us for over 7 years in complex, multinational deals as well as more day-to-day matters (production financing, talent negotiations, and some general corporate and commercial). Her advice was always smart, pragmatic, and clear (as a busy GC , I didn't have any hesitation in having her deal directly with my C-suite execs). She left private practice and we miss having her in our court.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Playa Vista, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
