After speaking to four different law offices, we decided to go with Jay at LifePlan Lawyer. When we met Jay for the first time, I greatly appreciated his knowledge, years of experience, professionalism, and most of all, his genuine human touch. Right away, I felt cared for, trusted, and comforted. And I can't say enough, even in a thousand words, about his team. Andrea and Daphney were there for me every step of the way. Whether I was in town or overseas, they always provided detailed explanations of follow-ups, gave heads-ups for the next steps, and responded immediately to calls and emails. I feel so fortunate to have found Jay and his team. Thank you very much for all your advice, guidance, efforts, and support when I needed it most. I highly recommend LifePlan Lawyer. They are simply the BEST team!

We are very grateful to have found Jay and his LifePlan Lawyer Team and were more than satisfied with their professionalism and knowledge. Jay walked my husband and I through the process of creating a Living Trust, Healthcare Directive, and Pour-Over Will, patiently answering our questions and making things easy to understand. He kept us on task and the whole process from start to finish was only a couple of weeks and it has now given us the peace of mind that our family will avoid costly probate fees and that our assets will transfer to our family with ease. Jay and his wife, Debbie, are great people and they make the process easy with online meetings and a very efficient in-person signing. We went for a bite to eat locally and then picked up our very nice binder with all documents organized only about 45 mins after signing. To top it off, Jay took a photo of us as his gift to us. I would definitely recommend Jay and the Lifeplan Lawyer Team to anyone looking for honest, professional, efficient and very personable legal advice. Jay and his team are a cut above the rest and his fees are reasonable too - you won't be disappointed.

I had spent a week calling law firms all over the east bay, needing assistance with a trust. I hit one roadblock after another. Either the firms didn't return calls, wouldn't even give me a consult for 6 weeks, or reviewed the paperwork and just didn't want to be bothered. And then some were just flat out not nice. I was trying to sell property and I was working under some time constraints. I had zero expectations when I called Hall Law Group. They were probably my 20th phone call. Imagine my surprise when they put me right through to Angie their paralegal. I explained what I was trying to do. Right out of the gate, she said absolutely they could help. I sent over some paperwork that she requested. Before the day was over, she had advised me of the path forward, what they would be doing on their end, and scheduled a phone consultation with Attorney Mike Hall. I couldn't believe how quickly she had the process moving forward. Mike, as well as everyone on his team, have been just a breeze to work with. They are all genuinely nice people who are all great at what they do. They had our trust issue handled and it was so painless and hassle free. After reviewing some of our other trust documents, Mike had the foresight to advise that we handle some items now, that we would have had to return to complete later down the line. I highly recommend them for Trust and Probate help. Thank you to everyone at Hall Law Group for all of your help.

Archana Srivastava, Esq. is a wonderful lawyer. She has helped me navigate custody issues with a difficult ex husband. I wish I had taken the advice she gave me in several instances. I should have listened to her because she was trying to guide me to compromising on things instead of fighting my ex. I regret not listening to her more because she knew what she was talking about. She wanted to resolve things in a constructive way which is one of the many reasons why I think Archana is a great lawyer.

We feel so happy have met Brian Quall when we needed to update our living Trust. We are elderly, but never felt the least bit condescended to. Brian was so kind and clear about the process and answered any and all questions that we had. He informed us of all that was required from us and what his role and responsibilities were. After signing the final document we breathed a sigh of relief and realized just how easy and painless the process was for us thanks to Brian's expertise.

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Pleasanton, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
