Steven played "David" as we went after "Goliath" (Big Insurance). Friends said we couldn't win ..... we did! He knew when to push and when to back off. He wrote a great letter citing case law which signaled they weren't up against inept, novice representation. They quickly settled. He did exactly what I hired him to do. He was also referred to me by another happy client.

No one has to explain how difficult it is to recover money from someone who lied to you, left you in an awful place, and disappeared – but Steve and his team did. I hired someone I believed to be a contractor to do work on the foundation of my house. He showed me his card which had a valid contractor’s license number and he had done a couple of handyman jobs for me, so I trusted him. Several months into the foundation retrofit, the City of Oakland noticed his work while inspecting a house across the street, and to my surprise red-tagged my property. Before abandoning his work the “would be” contractor had left my house with an exposed foundation and other big problems. I later found out that my house was near collapse from this person’s bad work. Demands to finish the work went unheeded. Demands for repayment of the money I had paid went unheeded. I had no choice but to sue this purported contractor and the actual contractor whose license was involved. Through careful and strong legal strategy, Steve and his team got the other side to finally hear my story and see their risk, and achieved a significant court order that functionally ended the case and resulted in a significant settlement for me. This resonates with me because I know what it is like to be ignored and the energy it takes to power through that kind of behavior and Steve and his firm brought it off. At each point in the litigation, Steve worked to minimize my costs where possible, and also advised me in related actions against the unlicensed contractor’s co-conspirators which resulted in one claim being settled and judgments against the rest of the defendants. I recommend Steven Joseph Kahn highly.

Steven handled a lawsuit for me as a defendant regarding a real estate transaction. His understanding of the real estate law, contract law, and court proceedings was superlative. His representation was timely, accurate, and cordial. His negotiation style is to the point of law without emotion or judgement. He provided matter of fact options and handled negotiations with the plaintiff’s attorney VERY well. Steven is, acccording to the old adage, “a scholar and a gentleman.” I would hire Steven again, if needed, in a heartbeat.

We worked directly with Steven over a two-year period on a home construction-related matter, involving both the contractor and their insurance company and ultimately resulted in resolution via mediation. Overall, we find Steve to be very experienced and practical. He is a measured and insightful advisor to us throughout the process, and always advise us to approach the matter by clearly and methodically laying out all the options for us to consider. We highly recommend Steven and his firm.

Our neighbors hillside slid down onto our property doing a great deal of damage and requiring a hillside repair that was very expensive. To protect our home we contracted out to various soils experts and licensed contractors to design and implement a fix along with securing the county's approval to perform the work. Initially our neighbor was not willing to work with us to pay for slide repairs. We contacted Hog Fenton Attorneys and Steven Kahn became our attorney in this matter. Steven was very responsive and considerate throughout the process including knowing when to bring in experts / colleagues while keeping the costs down. Steven and his colleagues were very upfront as to the potentially high costs and length of litigation should we have to sue and the various tradeoffs. Meanwhile working diligently with opposing counsel to find an acceptable solution outside of court. The complexity of this case was high due to the neighbor living in another country. In the end working with Steven we resolved the matter outside of the court system. I highly recommend Steven, responsive, thoughtful, practical thinker and a knowledgeable resource. Jerry

Lynn and Teresa were very accommodating throughout the whole process. They answered all of my questions as this was my first offense and the process was unfamiliar for myself. Lynn saved my career and without her I would not be able to work in my career field today. I was able to keep my driver license as it is a condition of my employment and I am very grateful that I picked Lynn to represent me. I highly recommend Lynn Gorelick.

Adam Gruen was recommended by an attorney with whom I had known for for years as the fellow to call for help with a frustrating litigation situation that occurred with a product I purchased and applied for my construction product. I unfortunately hired a different lawyer to help out at first with the objective of simply writing a letter to my insurance company to get them involved and represent me which is why I pay for insurance, Instead of writing a letter to demand my insurance get involved this other lawyer from Orinda, ca., went without my authorization and charged up within a week time over $10,000 dollars in what he said was research, his secretary copied typical stuff online in an impressive but useless folder, I was out of town when this nonsense was performed. I was then fortunately referred to Adam Gruen, not only did adam get my insurance involved immediately with a well written letter, but wrote a letter to the so called previous avaricious lawyer that kept sending me bills for over 10,000 dollars weekly, for his very useless online information. If you have an issue Adam will tell you up front if he can hlep, if he says he can, he does. If he feels he can't help he has the foresight to say he can't help without wasting your's or his time. Great guy to call for legal advice and or representation. Kirk G

Anyone who has ever heard of Ms. Dahm will know her reputation as being among the very best criminal defense attorneys. Her reputation is not remotely exaggerated. I have consulted with her on countless matters, including while I was a federal prosecutor and sought her critical eye and creative advocacy. I have observed her obtain not guilty verdicts for homicide and other violent crimes cases, where the evidence suggested she ought not have prevailed. She is exceptional.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Pleasanton, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.

Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
