Pros
1
Highly experienced and skilled criminal defense attorney
“I have seen...I don't know...maybe thousands of criminal defense attorneys in action. I have seen criminal defense lawyers who are flashier and undoubtedly more comfortable with charging people crazy high fees because, after all, being a little full of BS is part of the business side of criminal defense. I don't know how to say this as a positive thing but, I don't think that Jim is good at convincing people to fork over their entire life savings to represent them. He should be because he really is worth it.”
2
Excellent at connecting with juries and effectively negotiating with prosecutors
“Jim is exceptionally good in front of juries...exceptionally...really exceptionally. Are you getting that I am saying he is exceptionally good at connecting with normal types of people who end up on juries? And, the other thing good about Jim is that he doesn't come across as threatening or arrogant to prosecutors even though they know he is a threat. So, while other criminal defense lawyers may tick off prosecutors and make them want to beat the lawyer, prosecutors in the Inland Empire courts just kind of know that he WILL beat them.”
3
Personable and compassionate in dealing with clients
“Attorney James Grass is an Attorney at heart... meaning that he is passionate about his job. He would listen to your concerns and answer your questions in the best professional and considerable manner, including you in every decisions or discussions he considers would be helpful.”
4
Reliable and responsive in his communication with clients
“He replied to my emails, texts, and phone calls usually within an hour. He kept me informed of updates.”
5
Achieves favorable outcomes for his clients
“The felony case against me was dismissed, thanks to the hard work and dedication of James Gass. He guided me through this difficult time.”

Jim Gass has done a phenomenal job on behalf of my little brother. His top-tier legal defense instincts, experience and expertise are beyond question in San Bernardino County (SBC). His stand-alone outcome differentiator of having 'won more felony jury trials than any other attorney in SBC,' speaks for itself. As a dedicated family man Jim also dedicates his time and energy to the emotional as well as legal well-being of his clients. No sooner did my little brother meet with Jim than his entire demeanor changed. Operationally, Jim maintains an excellent rapport with courtroom colleagues on both sides of the justice system aisle, as is also all-too-critical to optimizing outcomes. Jim has my most sincere thanks, and I highly recommend him for legal defense services in the SBC area.

I am also a criminal defense lawyer and have been since 1997. Jim Gass was actually one of my supervising attorneys when I was a law clerk and in the first 3 years of my practice I worked with him extensively. He supervised my first jury trial. I have represented co-defendants in cases with him. If I needed a lawyer to defend me in trial, I would move Heaven and Earth to convince Jim to represent me. I am not at all exaggerating. I have seen...I don't know...maybe thousands of criminal defense attorneys in action. So, while other criminal defense lawyers may tick off prosecutors and make them want to beat the lawyer, prosecutors in the Inland Empire courts just kind of know that he WILL beat them. It is that trait that allows Jim to effectively settle cases in my opinion. I wish I could pull rabbits out of hats like Jim can. Anyone who writes a bad review doesn't know what they are talking about and I bet that most of the people who have reviewed him would give him stars that go beyond 5 if it were possible to do it. Funny but, the only reason I am writing this review is that I have a former client who I just gave Jim's information to so I had to look him up on the internet to get the number. Those people will be in good hands if they hire him.

I was being prosecuted with charges that would essentially ruin my life and my career. Out of the gate Mr. Gass had a game plan that we stuck to and not only did I avoid many years in prison for being wrongfully accused he got my case completely dropped. I would highly recommend James to anyone that is need of criminal legal council. His professionalism, communication and knowledge of law is second to none. Thank you again Mr. Gass for helping me.

A very experienced and passionate attorney. He is compassionate and good at what he does. He worked diligently on my case and everything was resolved. Amazingly to know that everyone at the court liked him. He is personable. He has a very good attorney's cost. Yours faithfully Vitus.

Jim is there for you when an unfortunate situation occurs. My family gave him a call when I was in trouble. He was honest about the kind of trouble I was in, the uphill battle we had with the DA, and advice to help my case. He was reliable and present at all my court dates. Court days are some of the longest days of your life. I don't know how to emphasize how important that is if you are incarcerated for your lawyer to show up. I witnessed many unreliable lawyers for other inmates. With prayer and Jim's expertise we resolved my case with results I was happy with. He obtained good results for my brother as well. I'll never forget that I put myself in there, and I'll never forget that James Gass helped me get out!

Toby Bowler was recommended to us by many friends and acquaintances. We'd had SO many bad experiences with attorneys before, but we were put in a position to have to hire another one. What a pleasant experience! Instead of feeling that our representation was a joke, and that the money we'd spent was a complete waste, we felt he earned every dime! He acted quickly in our behalf, he was the only attorney we'd met who leveled with us. It was clear he wanted to help us, not just take our money. He also knows his way around the SB court system. In the end, he got us everything we asked for...and then some! He is an amazing, ethical attorney and we can't recommend him highly enough!

We had been searching for an attorney to represent us in a dental malpractice case for 6 months . No one would take our case, we were very discouraged. My husband had been suffering with constant pain from a tooth that had been worked on 3 times. We finally decided to try another dentist. We discovered, that our pervious dentist had neglected to inform my husband of a broken instrument left in his tooth which had been causing the pain and discomfort he had been experiencing.. My husband was told the tooth had to be removed and he would need a implant. Without any hesitation, Mr. Ferraris represented us and we settled out of court. Thanks to our attorney Mr. Ferraris, we were able to get my husband's implant taken care and he was compensated for his pain and suffering. We highly recommend Mr. Ferris for any legal need.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Redlands, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
