I hired Laura after interviewing a few lawyers and I have not regretted my decision to hire her. Laura helped me with a difficult custody case and was very knowledgeable not only in family law but understood the financial issues very well and she also advised me about custody violations. I will not hesitate to recommend Laura to anyone in a divorce. She was focused in the trials and didn't waste time on the irrelevant information, that my wife's attorney raised again and again. All along, Laura helped me focus on the main and relevant issues in the case. She was empathetic and understood well the financial issues and co-parenting issues I faced. She thought through every question that I raised and answered in clear English. I trusted her to guide me through the most difficult and challenging time in my life. Laura knows what she is doing and I am happy with the settlement she negotiated for me.

Laura has helped me with several matters, covering a wide range of legal issues, over the past decade. She is very knowledgeable, skilled, and most importantly she is very responsive - she always returns my calls and emails promptly. She handles matters professionally and has excellent morals but is a "fighter" when she needs to be, and always has good advice on the right strategy to take. My job has had me work with several attorneys over the years, and that experience has shown me how exceptional Laura is compared to the rest. I can't recommend her highly enough.

I was really pleased by Atty Laura Furniss for fighting and taking the extra mile to help with my divorce case with great results. She is very knowledgeable, competent and compassionate. A very good lawyer and would recommend her to anyone.

It is actually difficult trying to find the words to describe the impact that Laura Furniss and Dubrovsky Law have had on me and my children. I honestly think about them and what they have done for us each and every day. Years ago, I found myself in a volatile and desperate situation with an attorney who did not at all prioritize my case, and an extremely difficult ex who was slowly and steadily taking me down with intimidation, harassment and abuse of the legal system. After what felt like a seamless transition from one attorney to the next, I finally felt less alone dealing with this massive dark shadow hanging above my family, afraid of it consuming us at any moment. Any parent who is going through this type of conflict, feels trapped and knows what is at stake will understand and appreciate this analogy. From the very beginning, Laura and Gary taught me how to always think in the way of the children's best interests, which is not always easy with high-conflict family law. They never focused on "winning or losing." They taught me a great deal about being fair and always doing the right thing, while acknowledging that I had been victimized and assuring me that they could help me. While many attorneys will try to get you in the door by making false promises, Laura and Gary kept it real and child-focused at all times. Their compassion benefited me not only as a parent but as a person; it benefited my entire family and helped me set a positive example as a mother to four daughters. In being fair, always focusing on the best interests of the children, and their support of me, they never relented. Standing up for me in court after years of being silenced was the greatest gift. Laura's talent and know-how, her sheer protection of me and my family not only sheltered me from continued abuse, but it empowered me to keep putting my children first and not give up on us in the face of cold hardship. You would think that someone so kind might have an issue dealing with tricky personalities or could be a pushover. In fact, the complete opposite is true. I have never seen someone so sure, so assertive and so talented in dealing with the complexities of family law and to the extents that I observed. Being a family law attorney is not for the faint of heart. Laura is very rare in that she has the passion and awareness to help families in ways that truly stand out. This cohesive team not only tackled my complex custody litigation, but my extremely complicated child support issues as well. Recently, we reached a climax in my case, having to go through the incredibly intense (and lengthy) process of a child custody evaluation. I was very scared because I was never going to be able to use the same tactics that had worked for my ex up until that point. Laura told me that I did not need to defend myself and that I did not need to (nor would she ever allow me) to be dishonest, but I just needed to allow someone to see us (me and my children) for who we are, and it was good enough. That our goodness and light would shine through. Trusting Laura in this ended up being one of the the best decisions I have ever made, and as a result my family is staying together. Laura Furniss is much more than just an attorney. She is a partner, a protector, a teacher (and a savior, really). If any parents like me are reading this and you need a shred of hope for relief in what you have been experiencing, look no further than Dubrovsky Law. The impact of her work has enabled me to breathe again after so long. The outcome has created a more relaxed environment for my children who have gained relief from the high conflict, enjoying their childhoods and not wondering what might happen next. What more could a parent want? Thank you to Laura and to Gary and Rosie at Dubrovsky Law, from the bottom of my heart.

I started with Andrew as my civil lawyer, and after frustration with my family lawyer, I hired Andrew for my family case too. Andrew and his colleague, Lindsey, are the strongest attorneys I would vouch for. Extremely knowledgeable, experienced, and professional. My former attorney made (/forced) me a settlement to share legal and physical custody of my minor. That was nothing but a disappointment. It made my case stretch over and over. When Andrew and Lindsey took over my case, I ended up getting full legal and physical custody of my daughter while the judge was boldly against me in every single hearing and trial. But Andrew navigated the case for me and made me gain full custody of my daughter. Andrew was transparent in presenting the case. He allowed me to express myself in the court. I have to add that Andrew is very fair and reasonable in his fees and charging me. I could not think of any better service.

I had a wonderful experience working with Andrew on a recent legal matter. I called a number of law offices but eventually found Andrew to be the most knowledgable, ethical and professional with a genuine care for his clients. After deciding to retain him, he continued with the same level of care to provide a stellar service with timely responses and helping me with the range of knowledge and expertise he brought to the case. I highly recommend him for legal counsel. He has knowledge and expertise, timely responsiveness and great deal of integrity. Thank you Andrew!

Ryan was introduced to our organization through a colleague, and he offered legal advice regarding our Employee Handbook, HR issues, labor laws, etc... He spent time reading over our documents and giving us current answers regarding said questions. So far, he has been very helpful!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Redwood City, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
