When it became clear I was going to need a divorce attorney, like most I asked around for recommendations. Bill came highly recommended and has not disappointed me once. At the initial consultation he listened and was very clear on what to expect. Bill came across as knowledgeable, honest and most importantly reliable. My initial overwhelmingly positive impression of both he and his staff has never faltered. During the course of my divorce I would often get calls or emails on the weekends or after hours from Bill or a member of his team. My divorce has ran longer then most and I have consistently received the highest quality representation from an attorney and staff who I believe genuinely care. I also think it is important to add that my preconceived notions of how a divorce works and the reality of the situation were very very far apart. Bill took the time to explain to me on several occasions the reality of the situation...I would argue with him..he would quote case law and give me examples very patiently and set me straight. I recently joked with a friend of mine I have a love/hate relationship with Bill Bratton. I honestly believe that my divorce could have been an unmitigated disaster given its contentious nature. Hiring Bill is the best decision I made during the arguably worst period of my life. I do hate that he has been right about everything...lol, his advice and guidance has been on point from day one. I have also taken the time to watch Bill work. When we have been in court I made it a point to watch him interact with other attorneys and even in court twice representing other clients. He demonstrates his vast experience with ease and clearly still has a passion for what he does. Bill is a master at his craft. I will close as I started...Bill Bratton is the best decision I made during the arguably worst period of my life.

In December of 2017 I found myself in need of an attorney to help me gain visitation of my two grandsons. On the recommendation of my previous divorce attorney (who no longer practices family law) I went to Bratton, Razo, & Lord. After a consultation my case was taken by Mike Razo. Mr. Razo has a very professional and calm demeanor; don’t let this fool you, he’s there to win. When our case finally went to trial Mr. Razo was incredibly well prepared and focused. One of the things that I appreciated was that Mr. Razo doesn’t get involved in personal character assassination and unnecessary drama. He fought my case with the facts and the law. The office staff at BRL is always friendly and professional. My e-mails and phone calls were always promptly answered. These things are so valuable when you’re in the middle of an emotional and difficult time. My case was complicated and a difficult win. I’m so glad that I put my trust in Bratton, Razo, & Lord and my entire family is eternally grateful for the hard work and dedication to this case.

I found Mr. Bratton's legal advice timely and accurate. He has an easy way, even when his advice is difficult to hear. His thorough review of the facts and his approach to conflict resolution gave me the best settlement. I highly recommend Mr. Bratton.

Mr. Razo recently provided excellent representation for a custody/visitation case. He was very thorough, detailed, attentive and professional. Very responsive during my case and provided frequent updates and was always open to answering my questions. He was always very organized and very familiar with the details of my case. I am very protective of my children and I felt like he truly cared about what was best for them and fought for them. He brought many things to my attention that I wouldn’t have otherwise thought of and made sure that I was thoroughly prepared for mediation and court.

Mr. Bratton and his office helped to make a horrible life event manageable. I doubt anyone wants to retain an attorney, but sometimes life forces that decision. In my case I was going through an unexpected divorce after 36 years of marriage and although much of the settlement issues were amicably decided upon between the parties, I still wanted the security of having an attorney handle my side of the divorce. Mr. Bratton was recommended to me by two different people whose opinions I trusted and ultimately he made the entire process as painless as possible. I highly recommend Mr. Bratton!

Tom Jacobson was hired to address several HR issues involving the termination and untimely retirement of employees. He was prepared, professional and extremely attentive to details. Tom kept the company officers in the loop and made excellent suggestions which made a very unpleasant situation work out smoothly. We've kept him on retainer.

Then BEST man to have on your side and I highly recommend Charles Kenyon. I gave him a call because I had tried talking to A LOT of law offices, I felt that no other offices were giving me any positive feedback nor were they returning my calls. Charles was the only one that would worked with me on traveling all the way to joshua tre, ca and gave me the faith I needed because he knows the law and he was so professional and I would not have anybody else besides Charles Kenyon. Hope anyone whose looking for justice to have your back, to go see Charles.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Riverside, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
