I hired Mr. Bratton for my divorce. From the beginning he took the time to answer the many questions I had about the process and was extremely diligent (along with his team) to help me understand the process. I explained that I had limited funds and would like to do as much of the foot work necessary to help the divorce along. He outlined my tasks and encouraged me along the way. I was guided well and given ideas of what was in my right to ask for which empowered me. Mr. Bratton's expertise in a time of emotional chaos was needed and in turn assisted with a deal that packaged everything I asked for. I am grateful for his wisdom in his craft and encourage others to seek his counsel in a tumultuous time.

Mr. Bratton is such a great divorce attorney, he cares From our first meeting and throughout, Mr. Bratton was great at returning phone calls and he made sure I understood what was taking place during the process. Long after the divorce was finalized, he continues to be here for me by going above and beyond. I highly recommend Mr. Bratton.

We have been clients of Mike Razo since February 2024 and it was the best decision we have ever made. He was not the first lawyer that represented us in the case for custody of our daughter. We had been fighting for primary custody since 2017 and spent tens of thousands of dollars in the process. When we retained Bratton and Razo, Mike was able to do what no other lawyer had been able to do in a fraction of the time, money, and headache. We now have 80% custody and he made that happen without us having to spend thousands of dollars and months of time on psychiatric evals like the previous lawyers all told us was necessary. Every step of the process went as smoothly as a custody case could go and every opportunity the court gave us, Mike got us closer to our goals. In just four months, we were granted primary custody and after eight months, we now have permanent orders from the court granting nearly everything we had hoped for. Our daughter is now in a home where she is free to grow to her full potential. She is at school every day, on time. She has the clothes and supplies she needs to succeed, and she is no longer in positions that no eight-year-old should have to be in. We have Mike Razo to thank for that. We will forever be grateful for what he has done for our family. He showed up to every court appearance on time and ready to present our case with full confidence. He was easy to reach and quick to respond to our calls and emails. I highly recommend Bratton and Razo to anyone who is fighting for their son or daughter’s future. If you have lost nearly all hope in the family law system like we had just eight short months ago, I recommend giving Mike Razo a shot.

Pros
1
Experienced and knowledgeable attorneys who are respected in the legal community
“If you're looking for a top notch family law attorney, go with the attorney who the other local attorneys (like me) know to call. He has and maintains a sterling reputation with judges and other attorneys, which will mean all the difference in your case.”
2
Attentive and responsive to client needs, with prompt communication
“He returned every call I made to him, his staff is unbelievably fast in getting documents to you. They kept me well informed of what was going on as it was happening.”
3
Provide realistic expectations and honest advice, even if it's not what the client wants to hear
“He was extremely informative, was able to quickly weed through the issues that didn't matter and address the truly important issues. I had no question this was the attorney that I wanted to represent me.”
4
Compassionate and understanding during a difficult time
“Even after my divorce was finalized, Bill has been available for legal advice regarding changes to visitation and custody. Getting a divorce does indeed suck, but if it must be done, you'll want someone to guide you through it. Bill does the job wonderfully.”
5
Effective negotiators and advocates in court
“Watching him in action, he is absolutely on a higher caliber in his field than others. He saved our family and we are eternally grateful.”
Cons
1
Legal services can be expensive, but are worth the investment
“He is not a cheap attorney, but in this case, 'You get what you pay for!' Excellent service from an honest man who tells you the truth, rather it benefits him or not.”
2
Billing can be based on time spent, so clients need to be mindful of communication
“They deduct from the retainer so make sure you really need that information. Otherwise trust who you're paying the big bucks to!”

Tom Jacobson was hired to address several HR issues involving the termination and untimely retirement of employees. He was prepared, professional and extremely attentive to details. Tom kept the company officers in the loop and made excellent suggestions which made a very unpleasant situation work out smoothly. We've kept him on retainer.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

  10. Are there alternative ways to resolve my legal issue?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Riverside, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
