Don't just walk - RUN! This guy is a criminal! This was the worst experience of my life. I searched the reviews here and saw all positive reviews, but they were all from LegalZoom. What Mr. Decker does is he recruits, he doesn't do law. He is very smooth and knows exactly what to say until you sign on the dotted line. I thought I was hiring Mr. Decker, but soon as I gave him the deposit, he did a bait and switch and sent me to a junior attorney to negotiate a settlement with a huge company. They laughed her out of the room! I knew he was a charlatan when I asked him a legal question in an email, and he called to respond with a very vague answer (didn't want to put it in writing). But the worst of this came after Mr. Decker asked for a $10K deposit on what he said would be a $2K job. So, it was a $2000 job, he wrote a contract not to exceed $13,000, asked for 10K up front, then sent me a bill for $22K!!! $22K to negotiate a settlement - maybe 20 emails total back and forth!!! The case was to settle $16K!!! You can't make this stuff up! Despite the contract and emails, he was still bold enough. I agreed to pay him $5K total and he agreed, just to be done, which was double what he said, and it is then the nightmare started all over again - he started blackmailing me. He coerced me into signing a contract that I wouldn't sue him. He wouldn't release my deposit until I signed. I almost went into cardiac arrest! In fact beware, I reported him to the attorney referral program, and they told me it is an increasing problem that attorneys coerce clients into signing non-disparagement clause, so they can't leave bad reviews.

We didn't have any in-depth dealings together but Derek helped me out with a small issue and I was very impressed by his attitude and professionalism, especially considering how unapproachable most attorneys were.

My daughter was involved in a situation that required an attorney with a "particular set of skills." We got all that and a whole lot more. Derek cleared his calendar and reacted to our needs immediately. Derek was incredibly professional and competent. He made several personal appearances on my daughters behalf and kept me up to date with every development. The end result of Derek's representation was better than I could have ever imagined. During our ordeal my daughter regularly told me "the thing I like the most is that he always asks me how I'm doing and I truly believe he cares." Thank you Derek for all you have done for us, your truly a gifted attorney and more importantly a good person...

I was referred to Mr. Decker by a fellow Real Estate associate, who really sang his praises. As an investor in Real Estate, some of the transactions were involved in are creative and atypical of traditional transactions. He carefully and thoughtfully reviewed the base documents I provided, and offered important and imperative state specific clauses that were missing. He even provided me a free document for sellers disclosures and explained why it was a good idea to have that handy, even though I am not responsible to provide that as a buyer. He returned all my phone calls, emails in a prompt manner. I needed the documents to be reviewed and revised under a time crunch, he easily obliged. Even when I called back to cancel the rush (my meeting got postponed) he said he had already set that time aside for reviewing my documents and had them to me by the original time frame he stated. I did not feel pressured or up sold. He did not try to extract a large sum of money from me, or advise me to scrap the documents I already had in efforts to charge me extra. Since then, we chatted a few times since then about other business issues and even a personal family real estate concern I had. This attorney was helpful, polite, fair, easy to deal with, great listener and very understanding. my interactions with him have proved his character and his commitment to his clients. He provided thoughtful solutions and offering to check in with some of his business and legal circle for clear second opinions and additional answers to my concerns and questions. I can genuinely sigh a breath of relief knowing I have Mr. Decker added to my business team. ***I would also like to mention, before finding Mr. Decker, I had another attorney review my documents, who I can only assume, wasn't equipped to review them. The previous lawyer, had ample time to review my documents, a week or more and very plainly told me everything looked fine but he wasn't versed in the style of Real Estate investing. He made no notes, no revisions, no state specific revisions. Nothing... By far, one of the best experiences I have with lawyers, both personally or professionally. Finding an honest, honorable and considerate attorney is equivalent to finding a needle in a haystack!!! p.s. I don't actually know the personal that gave Mr. Decker a discredited review. However, I literally do not have one negative thing to say about Mr. Decker. Myself and the person that referred me, both think very highly of him. He saved me alot of money and headache by updating and revising these documents!!! I also referred Mr. Decker to my fiance who is dealing with an Entertainment infringement case. I have also referred him to other fellow real estate investors.

Being new to California, Rudy was referred to me by a highly-respected Employment & Labor attorney from outside the Sacramento region. She said, "Rudy's your guy. "You have a believable story. Rudy will be sure you get a fair shot. Call him." I did. Rudy returned my initial call promptly. He took time to listen to my story, asking thoughtful and provoking questions along the way. Within 20 minutes I had a clear understanding of the unique California employment laws I was up against. Rudy clearly laid out next steps he felt were available to me. Rudy presented two straight-up fee options, a super easy to complete online engagement agreement and then encouraged me to think about things before signing! He said "If I thought he could be helpful and I wanted to proceed, to call him back to meet the aggressive document timelines established by my employer." I did. Within 48-hours of engaging Rudy's services, he took full control of my case, and established an elevated level for consideration to my employer, offering a real sense of hope for me and my family. Rudy then said to stay calm, be patient and wait. I did. Over a matter on weeks, Rudy communicated directly with my employers leadership, human resources and attorneys, keeping me informed every step of the way. Rudy reported, "the company is moving slowly, but definitely moving in the right direction for you. Keep the faith." I did. The bottom line; Working with Rudy was an inspiring experience for me. Rudy knows his stuff, kept me informed, was straightforward, honest and true to his word. Rudy negotiated a fair agreement with my past employer at levels greater than I could have achieved on my own. Rudy's sense of justice, (vs. the dollar) is real and so refreshing. Did Rudolf Delson's expertice, leadership, guidance, and dedication to my personal employment case make a difference for me and my family? YES, RUDY DID!

Sympathetic, friendly, analytical, and most importantly, effective. Highly effective. These are simply a few words I would use to describe Mr. Delson as my lawyer. I had spent more years than I care to remember, giving everything I had to an employer I imagined staying with for the rest of my career. Then, in an instant, it was all gone. I was destroyed. I needed to hold my employer accountable but had no legal resources to turn to. Then I found Mr. Delson via Avvo. Over the next few months, Mr. Delson reviewed my case in minute detail, collaborated with additional specialist counsel (the case was complex and extended way beyond pure-play employment issues), and devised the winning strategy. Going up against a large company with expensive lawyers is not for the faint-hearted. If you are in a situation like this and are unsure as to whether you should proceed with litigation - talk to Mr. Delson. Now I am on the other side of this case, I couldn't be happier with the result. Did I mention he is also a joy to work with? Absolutely delighted.

Never did I expect I'd need a lawyer for my small business. Those types of problems happened to "other people". However, that day came and I really felt like I had no recourse. As a last resort, I talked to Rudy about my options and he knew I had a case. I was nervous, as this whole process was new to me, but he was so knowledgeable about the whole situation, guided me through my options and was able to parse through a complicated situation and break it down succinctly. I felt heard and taken care of, and thus, trusted Rudy's decisions from day one on the best approach—and we ended the process better than I ever expected. Thank you!!

Knows the rules of the game, very insightful and with a work ethic beyond compare (she was at a July 4th celebration with her family working on my company's transaction via phone and laptop as it was international and where I was doing the deal didn't give a flying 's*&t' about America's Independence Day and wanted it done.) Very sharp, reliable and the best securities lawyer I've seen on the West Coast.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Sacramento, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
