I hired Mr. Begley to handle an appeal in a case involving my parents' estates. He was able to get the initial ruling reversed and helped negotiate the settlement agreement with my sister in a very short time at a reasonable cost. He responded to my questions with answers that weren't just legalese- they actually made sense in English.

I felt awful when my former employer convinced the trial court to throw out my entire wrongful-termination lawsuit because it appeared that I did not have enough evidence. Things got even worse when my former employer asked the judge to order me to pay a huge sum for its fees and costs in getting a defense judgment. It all seemed totally wrong when my trial lawyer basically said my case was over. She suggested that I should consider giving up my appellate rights in exchange for my former employer decreasing the amount of money that I was going to owe for fees or costs. I hated that idea, so I looked for an appellate lawyer. When I called Brendan, he took the time to understand my case. He said he thought the judge misread my evidence and that I had good arguments to get my lawsuit back on track. He also explained the risks and expense of going down that road. I decided to go for it and followed Brendan's recommendation to ask the trial judge to reconsider the judgment before filing an appeal. Brendan said the odds of a trial court reversing its own ruling in any case are very low, but it was worth a shot in my case. I was overjoyed when the trial court rejected the arguments my former employer made and actually reversed the judgment based on the papers Brendan prepared. Instead of waiting a year or more for the appellate court to put my case back on track, Brendan made it happen within a couple of months. Better yet, the threat of having to pay for my former employer's costs and fees evaporated right away. I felt that Brendan explained things to me clearly without any exaggeration. I believe his knowledge of appeals and his litigation and negotiation skills completely turned my case around and enabled me to get a great outcome.

My opponent's attorney in a probate case filed a motion to strike my petition, which the trial court denied. However, because it was a special motion to strike, my opponent was able to file an immediate appeal without waiting for a final judgment. This maneuver could have delayed the entire probate case for a year or two until the appeal was decided, but Brendan was a really strong advocate for me and my family and he stepped in and took aggressive steps to prevent the extended delay. At all times Brendan explained my options to me and kept me up to date about important developments. His efforts helped us to resolve the case more quickly, and I was pleased with his work and the results he helped us to achieve. To be quite frank - litigation is awful. This case in particular was extremely contentious and exhausting. But Brendan was so kind and so smart, I could at least relax in knowing that I had good counsel. He is a brilliant writer and so skilled - I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Brendan saved our judgment without running up a big bill. A Federal Trial Court ruled "in our favor" and our opponents filed a harassing appeal. Other lawyers might have found lots of work to do in the early stages of the appeal to run up their fees. But, Brendan sensed that our opponents likely would run out of steam. He advised us against having him do unnecessary work, and he was right! The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed the appeal when our opponents blew their deadlines and Brendan saved us a favorable judgment and a lot of money." We would "highly" recommend Brendan Begley!

It looked like challenging a flawed property division in my family-law case was not worth the money it would take for me to pursue an appeal, so other lawyers seemed uninterested in helping me. Brendan recommended an approach that no other lawyer thought of -- and it worked! He negotiated capably with my ex-wife and her attorney, got them to focus on the important issues and to realize the financial risks they faced, and helped me to obtain the result I wanted through a settlement within a couple months. He did it in a very economic fashion without marching all the way through the long and potentially costly appellate process. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Brendan and he will be my first call should I need legal representation in the future.

Being new to California, Rudy was referred to me by a highly-respected Employment & Labor attorney from outside the Sacramento region. She said, "Rudy's your guy. "You have a believable story. Rudy will be sure you get a fair shot. Call him." I did. Rudy returned my initial call promptly. He took time to listen to my story, asking thoughtful and provoking questions along the way. Within 20 minutes I had a clear understanding of the unique California employment laws I was up against. Rudy clearly laid out next steps he felt were available to me. Rudy presented two straight-up fee options, a super easy to complete online engagement agreement and then encouraged me to think about things before signing! He said "If I thought he could be helpful and I wanted to proceed, to call him back to meet the aggressive document timelines established by my employer." I did. Within 48-hours of engaging Rudy's services, he took full control of my case, and established an elevated level for consideration to my employer, offering a real sense of hope for me and my family. Rudy then said to stay calm, be patient and wait. I did. Over a matter on weeks, Rudy communicated directly with my employers leadership, human resources and attorneys, keeping me informed every step of the way. Rudy reported, "the company is moving slowly, but definitely moving in the right direction for you. Keep the faith." I did. The bottom line; Working with Rudy was an inspiring experience for me. Rudy knows his stuff, kept me informed, was straightforward, honest and true to his word. Rudy negotiated a fair agreement with my past employer at levels greater than I could have achieved on my own. Rudy's sense of justice, (vs. the dollar) is real and so refreshing. Did Rudolf Delson's expertice, leadership, guidance, and dedication to my personal employment case make a difference for me and my family? YES, RUDY DID!

Sympathetic, friendly, analytical, and most importantly, effective. Highly effective. These are simply a few words I would use to describe Mr. Delson as my lawyer. I had spent more years than I care to remember, giving everything I had to an employer I imagined staying with for the rest of my career. Then, in an instant, it was all gone. I was destroyed. I needed to hold my employer accountable but had no legal resources to turn to. Then I found Mr. Delson via Avvo. Over the next few months, Mr. Delson reviewed my case in minute detail, collaborated with additional specialist counsel (the case was complex and extended way beyond pure-play employment issues), and devised the winning strategy. Going up against a large company with expensive lawyers is not for the faint-hearted. If you are in a situation like this and are unsure as to whether you should proceed with litigation - talk to Mr. Delson. Now I am on the other side of this case, I couldn't be happier with the result. Did I mention he is also a joy to work with? Absolutely delighted.

Never did I expect I'd need a lawyer for my small business. Those types of problems happened to "other people". However, that day came and I really felt like I had no recourse. As a last resort, I talked to Rudy about my options and he knew I had a case. I was nervous, as this whole process was new to me, but he was so knowledgeable about the whole situation, guided me through my options and was able to parse through a complicated situation and break it down succinctly. I felt heard and taken care of, and thus, trusted Rudy's decisions from day one on the best approach—and we ended the process better than I ever expected. Thank you!!

Knows the rules of the game, very insightful and with a work ethic beyond compare (she was at a July 4th celebration with her family working on my company's transaction via phone and laptop as it was international and where I was doing the deal didn't give a flying 's*&t' about America's Independence Day and wanted it done.) Very sharp, reliable and the best securities lawyer I've seen on the West Coast.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Sacramento, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
