Pros
1
Highly respected and experienced criminal defense attorney
“Russell Miller is highly respected in the courtroom by all (judges, da's, as well as other lawyers).”
2
Achieves good outcomes for clients
“He has gotten charges dismissed as well as saved me from doing jailtime.”
3
Knowledgeable and skilled at negotiating plea bargains
“Due to my lengthy criminal history and some damaging evidance I chose not to go to trial but rather to have Russell negotiate a plea bargain. I feel like Russell did a Good job and he kept me out of prison with a minimal county jail sentence and some probation.”
Cons
1
Poor communication and responsiveness
“I've called many times and asked that my son get much needed court mandated counceling for child killed in his car, and 6 yrs in prison when atty black put him there at 17,he refused to rat on friend and took fall, he's not communicating with family, being a drs daughter I know he's suffering grief and severe trauma. Russel won't address what my son needs to survive his trauma.”
2
Unreliable in appearing for court dates
“Our lawyer did not appear at several courtdates and/or he was late at appearances.”
3
Keeps clients' money without providing adequate service
“After the first court date, which didn't go well, he promised to call me to let me know what will happen next. I could not get him to return calls and his secretary Tracy Pratchen kept saying he was out of the office. After two weeks of not being able to contact him, I fired him as an attorney. He left the case 'hanging' and had to hire another attorney. Needing money, I asked for the remainder of my money back. I could not get a hold of Russell Miller and often reached voicemail, which my calls were never returned. He kept all the money and never returned any phone calls.”

I highly recommend Mr. Russell Miller as a top Criminal Defense Attorney. He is very knowledgeable and has the expertise to win your case. He has a lot of experience and is highly respected in the courtrooms by everyone (especially the judges). He will appear at all court appearances and will make sure he achieved the best outcome possible for your case. He fought for me until the end and I am amazed by the outcome of my case. I would recommend Mr. Miller to anyone seeking a criminal defense attorney as he knows how to get the job accomplished. Great job and thank you for being there for me.

I have been requesting that Russ Miller file for a correction in my record. I have been assured numerous times over 21 years - yes 21 years - that it will be done. Because Mr. Miller failed to do as promised it took me too long to get approved as a resource family and ultimately a precious child with complex medical needs passed away in the care of inadequately trained people. I last spoke with Mr. Miller last year and have a copy of a letter I sent him in 2019. I have notes showing that I contacted him numerous times (not quite yearly) and every time, I have been assured it will be cleared up. Additionally, when my case was active, he failed to appear in court multiple times although he had already been paid. This man will tell you he will work hard for you but after he gets your money, he pretty much puts forth no effort and in the end his mistake or failure to correct the court's mistake has followed me these decades and worst of all resulted in preventing me from saving a child's life - just before her 2nd birthday. If you are considering hiring this agency, I would recommend you run - fast!!

Absolutely horrible attorney. Deprives clients of their constitutional rights. Will flood his schedule and make your family wait months if not years before he does anything at all. I had Mr. Miller represent me and he violated my constitutional right to effective representation. He was absolutely horrible. He is resentful as well. If you request for him to help you and actually perform a service before he wants to (years away) he will intentionally throw your case. Or he is really just that bad. He does not prepare at all and never has any of the facts in court. He will ignore you. I called many many times over a period of about a year. Never once did he answer his phone.

Russ Miller has been our family lawyer for most of my life now. He is highly respected in the courtroom by all (judges, da's, as well as other lawyers). He is always professional. Is very good at keeping his word when he says he is going to do something. He always takes our calls and returns messages right away. He has gotten charges dismissed as well as saved me from doing jailtime. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for an excellent criminal defense attorney!!

Being new to California, Rudy was referred to me by a highly-respected Employment & Labor attorney from outside the Sacramento region. She said, "Rudy's your guy. "You have a believable story. Rudy will be sure you get a fair shot. Call him." I did. Rudy returned my initial call promptly. He took time to listen to my story, asking thoughtful and provoking questions along the way. Within 20 minutes I had a clear understanding of the unique California employment laws I was up against. Rudy clearly laid out next steps he felt were available to me. Rudy presented two straight-up fee options, a super easy to complete online engagement agreement and then encouraged me to think about things before signing! He said "If I thought he could be helpful and I wanted to proceed, to call him back to meet the aggressive document timelines established by my employer." I did. Within 48-hours of engaging Rudy's services, he took full control of my case, and established an elevated level for consideration to my employer, offering a real sense of hope for me and my family. Rudy then said to stay calm, be patient and wait. I did. Over a matter on weeks, Rudy communicated directly with my employers leadership, human resources and attorneys, keeping me informed every step of the way. Rudy reported, "the company is moving slowly, but definitely moving in the right direction for you. Keep the faith." I did. The bottom line; Working with Rudy was an inspiring experience for me. Rudy knows his stuff, kept me informed, was straightforward, honest and true to his word. Rudy negotiated a fair agreement with my past employer at levels greater than I could have achieved on my own. Rudy's sense of justice, (vs. the dollar) is real and so refreshing. Did Rudolf Delson's expertice, leadership, guidance, and dedication to my personal employment case make a difference for me and my family? YES, RUDY DID!

Sympathetic, friendly, analytical, and most importantly, effective. Highly effective. These are simply a few words I would use to describe Mr. Delson as my lawyer. I had spent more years than I care to remember, giving everything I had to an employer I imagined staying with for the rest of my career. Then, in an instant, it was all gone. I was destroyed. I needed to hold my employer accountable but had no legal resources to turn to. Then I found Mr. Delson via Avvo. Over the next few months, Mr. Delson reviewed my case in minute detail, collaborated with additional specialist counsel (the case was complex and extended way beyond pure-play employment issues), and devised the winning strategy. Going up against a large company with expensive lawyers is not for the faint-hearted. If you are in a situation like this and are unsure as to whether you should proceed with litigation - talk to Mr. Delson. Now I am on the other side of this case, I couldn't be happier with the result. Did I mention he is also a joy to work with? Absolutely delighted.

Never did I expect I'd need a lawyer for my small business. Those types of problems happened to "other people". However, that day came and I really felt like I had no recourse. As a last resort, I talked to Rudy about my options and he knew I had a case. I was nervous, as this whole process was new to me, but he was so knowledgeable about the whole situation, guided me through my options and was able to parse through a complicated situation and break it down succinctly. I felt heard and taken care of, and thus, trusted Rudy's decisions from day one on the best approach—and we ended the process better than I ever expected. Thank you!!

Knows the rules of the game, very insightful and with a work ethic beyond compare (she was at a July 4th celebration with her family working on my company's transaction via phone and laptop as it was international and where I was doing the deal didn't give a flying 's*&t' about America's Independence Day and wanted it done.) Very sharp, reliable and the best securities lawyer I've seen on the West Coast.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Sacramento, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
