Called in to get a consult on a business dispute, and having already contacted several attorneys, I was expecting the same pitch...to make an appointment and go there and get very little information for a lot of money. Instead, even though the attorney was in the middle of something, he set aside time to take my call and answered every question that I had without charging a penny. It really put me at ease. I got more info during that half hour than the prior week visiting a dozen other lawyers. He made some good suggestions which I tried and helped a lot, so I was able to get it taken care of without spending anything. I still hired him anyway for a different problem later, but it's because I knew this was someone I could trust to get the job done. End result was perfect in both.

I found Ernest from Yelp since I see many consistent good reviews about him. I took the courage to give it a shot and call him in addition to another 2 lawyers to help me with a eviction case recently. I had a very bad experience with another greedy lawyer in Sacramento regarding tenant issues. So I am very hesitant to seek help from another one. Ernest, however, is not the cheapest attorney of the three but he gave me the most thorough and informative advice even before he took on my case over the phone. He clearly was able to think from my situation. In past two months, despite my small case of eviction, he has been very patient and responsive to my so many questions. His advice is very succinct, accurate and informative. He truly lives up to his promise to help me overcome the problem. I feel that he genuinely thought from my perspectives and best interest . I have been very well informed by him throughout the whole process what my options are. He would not take advantage of my vulnerable situation and my determination to evict the bad tenant by talking me into more expensive options. He is truly a very good lawyer who really wants to help. Given the amount of time he spent on my small case, his fee is definitely reasonable and i felt very well informed from the get go. Must recommend him to many other miserable landlords in Sacramento.

Had a problem with a lawsuit. Most lawyers don't take cases halfway though, but they did. Looked around on the Internet and found this law office. The main lawyer Chen there seems pretty busy and has cases in court all the time (I guess so if everyone is trying to hire him) but still got back to me each time and seems pretty smart. I like that he told me about different strategies to see if any of them would help me before I signed up, while other places just kind of kept to themselves so I didn't know what they could do for me. Staff are pretty helpful and really really nice folks. Their prices were a lot less than other lawyers and did not charge any of the nickel and dime stuff like making copies or paperclips like the other place that I used. Really good experience considering I was having legal troubles, but I guess that's what lawyers are for. Will definitely say they are in my top referral.

Thru thick and thin, he's there. That's what I got to say about Attorney Chen. Even though there's other people that work at his law office, you definitely want to ask for him by name if you got a problem. I was being sued and it was pure harassment. Could not find a lawyer to take the case on short notice, and get this...other lawyers said they would review my stuff but would charge me for it without even knowing if they would take my case. Geez, that's messed up. I'm not made of money or TIME! I called some other lawyers first, who basically told me to settle it fast without even knowing anything about my situation, and they told me no advice at all. Then I found attorney Chen online and then met to talk for a hour and after looking at my stuff for free, he said that he would take the case and try to get it dismissed. He was kind of busy but knew I had a deadline and filed a countersuit ASAP. Then he told me he called em up and told their snake...oops I mean lawyer, that he would take em through court for years. Well that got em all twitchy. In a month, they dropped the lawsuit. Best part? His office charged me for the basically the same price to get rid of the whole lawsuit as what another lawyer wanted to chage me to just look at my documents! I never liked lawyers. But I like this one. I told my whole family about this law office. Will definitely see him for anything else in the future. Way to go. I give him A+++

We had a child custody dispute since last year in 2009. I didn't have any money but really needed help. My first two lawyers gave up when I ran out of money and they didn't do anything for me. They just had an appointment after another appointment until my money was gone. Then I went looking for another lawyer and 5 lawyers turned me down. They all just wanted money up front, and a couple of them gave me like 10 minutes to talk. Attorney Ernest Chen was the only person who spent probably 2 hours talking with me at no charge. He looked at my documents and even called me again a day later to give me his opinion and tole me how to do it even if I did not hire him. The whole time, he never asked me if I had money to pay. I felt blessed that money wasn't the first thing on his mind. Even when I was there and the phone rang a bunch of times with clients asking for him, I heard the receptionist say that he was busy in a meeting. I was happy that I was the first priority. At the end, I didn't have money to pay for a lawyer. We worked out something so that if I ever got a job then I would try to do what I could on the bill, but then that money at his office would just go toward helping out another client down the road. Basically our whole community is just taking care of one another! Even so, he gave me a really good rate, and worked on my case for nearly a year dealing with my husband's nasty attorney, and he didn't even collect a penny he whole time. He was great! He didn't take any bs from my ex-husband's lawyer and we worked out a custody settlement that two other lawyers weren't able to do for me in the past. If you really need someone to take care of you, then this is the guy. His law office does a lot of help for the community, and I'm glad someone referred me to him. I am now telling anyone I know, that folks at the Law Offices of Chen & Lee are the ones you want to represent you.

Being new to California, Rudy was referred to me by a highly-respected Employment & Labor attorney from outside the Sacramento region. She said, "Rudy's your guy. "You have a believable story. Rudy will be sure you get a fair shot. Call him." I did. Rudy returned my initial call promptly. He took time to listen to my story, asking thoughtful and provoking questions along the way. Within 20 minutes I had a clear understanding of the unique California employment laws I was up against. Rudy clearly laid out next steps he felt were available to me. Rudy presented two straight-up fee options, a super easy to complete online engagement agreement and then encouraged me to think about things before signing! He said "If I thought he could be helpful and I wanted to proceed, to call him back to meet the aggressive document timelines established by my employer." I did. Within 48-hours of engaging Rudy's services, he took full control of my case, and established an elevated level for consideration to my employer, offering a real sense of hope for me and my family. Rudy then said to stay calm, be patient and wait. I did. Over a matter on weeks, Rudy communicated directly with my employers leadership, human resources and attorneys, keeping me informed every step of the way. Rudy reported, "the company is moving slowly, but definitely moving in the right direction for you. Keep the faith." I did. The bottom line; Working with Rudy was an inspiring experience for me. Rudy knows his stuff, kept me informed, was straightforward, honest and true to his word. Rudy negotiated a fair agreement with my past employer at levels greater than I could have achieved on my own. Rudy's sense of justice, (vs. the dollar) is real and so refreshing. Did Rudolf Delson's expertice, leadership, guidance, and dedication to my personal employment case make a difference for me and my family? YES, RUDY DID!

Sympathetic, friendly, analytical, and most importantly, effective. Highly effective. These are simply a few words I would use to describe Mr. Delson as my lawyer. I had spent more years than I care to remember, giving everything I had to an employer I imagined staying with for the rest of my career. Then, in an instant, it was all gone. I was destroyed. I needed to hold my employer accountable but had no legal resources to turn to. Then I found Mr. Delson via Avvo. Over the next few months, Mr. Delson reviewed my case in minute detail, collaborated with additional specialist counsel (the case was complex and extended way beyond pure-play employment issues), and devised the winning strategy. Going up against a large company with expensive lawyers is not for the faint-hearted. If you are in a situation like this and are unsure as to whether you should proceed with litigation - talk to Mr. Delson. Now I am on the other side of this case, I couldn't be happier with the result. Did I mention he is also a joy to work with? Absolutely delighted.

Never did I expect I'd need a lawyer for my small business. Those types of problems happened to "other people". However, that day came and I really felt like I had no recourse. As a last resort, I talked to Rudy about my options and he knew I had a case. I was nervous, as this whole process was new to me, but he was so knowledgeable about the whole situation, guided me through my options and was able to parse through a complicated situation and break it down succinctly. I felt heard and taken care of, and thus, trusted Rudy's decisions from day one on the best approach—and we ended the process better than I ever expected. Thank you!!

Knows the rules of the game, very insightful and with a work ethic beyond compare (she was at a July 4th celebration with her family working on my company's transaction via phone and laptop as it was international and where I was doing the deal didn't give a flying 's*&t' about America's Independence Day and wanted it done.) Very sharp, reliable and the best securities lawyer I've seen on the West Coast.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Sacramento, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
