I was charged with felony embezzlement by a public official shortly after I retired from my law enforcement career as the Police Chief. It was a high profile case and the DA’s office was relentless in their desire to have me prosecuted. The case stemmed from the transfer of an old retired police car from the patrol fleet to our explorer post. My lead advisor for the Explorer post registered the vehicle in his personal name instead of the Explorer post as I had directed him to. It appeared as though I had gifted the car to him which I had not. This was a case of inattention on my part since I assumed he did as I told him to. There never was any intention by me to do anything other than what I had been directed to by the City. The car was never sold, traded, loaned or used in any other way except for its intended purpose. Nevertheless, I was facing prison time and loss of my 28 year retirement pension. To say the least, I was in quite a tight situation. Tom and Brian Worthington took my case and very meticulously went through each piece of evidence item by item as we prepared for a lengthy 2 week jury trial. They both made a very unpleasant situation as bearable as possible for my wife and I. Karen, Bertha and the rest of the office staff were all so calming and hospitable, I feel as if they are my extended family now. My trial ended in a hung jury. The DA had the option to retry the case. I decided to enter a no contest plea to a much lesser charge in order to avoid another stressful and time consuming trial. My no contest plea resulted in some minor community service work and probation and I kept my retirement. After my probation expired, Tom took the extra steps to have my record expunged so that I am now able to secure gainful employment without having to divulge a criminal record. Without the legal representation from the Worthington Law Firm, I could have easily gone to prison and had my retirement pension taken from me for a crime I did not commit. I owe both of these guys my life! This isn’t just a really good law firm, it is the ONLY law firm if you need competent a defense attorney(s) who truly care about you and the outcome of your case. To receive a phone call informing a mother that her son miles away from home, had been arrested and was to be transferred to California, and held in detention, to respond to an outstanding arrest warrant is among the most shocking events that can happen. My son is an International student, he had studied in California for Computer Science but transferred to another university in Chicago two years ago. He was not aware there was an outstanding arrest warrant. So, he was in shock also. My son was released from custody, he was allowed return to university to resume his studies and returned to California for a final hearing in March. He has wisely advised my son in every step towards the final process. Finally , the process is finished, my son is back at university to complete his studies.
