I recently was charged with a crime, a felony, but because of prop 47, it became a misdemeanor, HOWEVER, perhaps not for me. To make matters worse, I picked up a SECOND case shortly after. I unfortunately have quite an extensive past, involving 2 state prison terms. Because of that, these misdemeanors could have very well been brought up to a felony, because of my past and I may have been facing another long prison term. I did not have much time to act, however I did not have the means for an attorney, and accepted the fact I would be getting a public defender. Without going into personal detail, I had A LOT more to lose than just my freedom, a mentally challenged brother who lives with me, as I take care of him. He ONLY has me. I had A LOT to lose. ONE DAY before my initial court date, I had the means to hire a private attorney. One day. I googled, "TOP CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEYS IN SAN DIEGO", and MR. STEPHEN CLINE'S name came up, top on the page. I called his office. My call was answered by TRISHA PHILLIPS, Mr. Cline's office manager and assistant. Trisha listened patiently to my panicked story, was extremely professional and sympathetic towards me. I hired Mr. Cline OVER the phone with Trisha, and drove to his office to settle arrangements with her. In one hour, I had an attorney, without ever meeting Mr. Cline at that point, I somehow KNEW, I was in THE BEST of hands. Mr. Cline appeared in court for me the following morning. I received a call from Trisha afterwards relaying the outcome of the day. Because of the severity, not the charge thus far, but the severity of my PAST, Mr. Cline was completely up front with me of the possibilities I faced and his course of action he planned to take so I would receive the best possible outcome. Anyone going through a court case knows, your attorney can never guarantee you anything, but what he can tell you, is what he plans to do for you. This is the moment, you will KNOW, if you hired a great attorney, if he or she is planning to FIGHT for you. Mr. Cline did this for me. I KNEW, I could not have hired ANYONE better. I knew he was going to fight for me. He had legal aids work closely with me, gathering details that Mr. Cline requested, and he continued going to court, on my behalf, all through the court proceedings, and then I would be informed of each outcome. Finally, sentencing day and it was over. TWO cases, an extensive background, TWO prison prior terms......and I NEVER stepped into the courtroom ONCE, Mr. Cline did. I did NOT get a state prison term, nor even a county jail sentence. I am doing 3 months house arrest, 5 days public work service and of course, fines, which is out of any attorneys control. Believe me, going through court proceedings is terrifying, especially when you're facing prison. I have done it twice, and the court proceedings are almost worst than the time, almost. As frightened as I was about my possibilities of prison again, I never felt the intense pressures and stress of going to court. I never stepped a foot inside, I didn't have to, I hired, THE TOP CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEY IN SAN DIEGO !! This is a FACT ! I am not proud of my past, but I am not too ashamed of it either, I paid my dues and my debt to society and I've been told and I know, I paid a little too harshly for my offenses in the past. Thankfully, because of Mr. Cline, I did not have to pay once more, with my freedom. This ATTORNEY.....he is THE ONE to have on your side !!! I was almost sorry when it was over because I wouldn't be seeing him again.......NOT IN HIS OFFICE !! Not me ! I was would like to add, my case was finalized 3 months ago. I have had attorneys in the past...once the case is over, his office is done with you. Not at Mr. Cline's. I have called many times with questions since, regarding my court orders, and ALWAYS, Trisha is there to guide and advise me. I cannot say enough and I cannot THANK YOU enough Mr. Cline, Trisha and your entire team !!

Steve's experience, relationships with prosecutors, and diligence set him apart from other defense attorneys. He provides his clients with the peace of mind that he will achieve the best possible outcome under the circumstances. Moreover, he is sympathetic, understanding, and never patronizing. Steve knows that a client's lone bad decision can be life altering and he takes utmost care in preserving that client's dignity. If you are looking for or recommending a defense attorney, Steve Cline needs to be on that short list.

My wife of 25 years filed a restraining order against me. I am in my seventies, a retired surgeon, and have never had this kind of legal issue. Ms. Keegan did not start by evaluating my ability to pay but instead listened, clearly comprehended my situation, and agreed to take my case. She is a Jurist with the added outstanding qualities of organization, problem-solving, laser focus, attention, and retention of details, and she responds and adapts to changing circumstances with composure. Her patience elevates her to the highest levels of professionalism, coupled with her analysis, writing, and persuasion skills, will give you great comfort that you are represented by the best.

I was referred to Anna by a friend. I needed some legal forms written up and gone over with me. I was also in somewhat of a hurry. Anna was very thorough in explaining everything to me and she was extremely hardworking. She had the forms ready for me in half the time the other attorneys said it would take. She was also very knowledgable in the matter at hand which made me feel safe and protected. I am very thankful for Anna and if you need legal help she is the best.

I needed a few things taken care of legally and I really didn't know where to start. Anna was so knowledgable about exactly what I needed to do and how she could help me. I was calling her with questions all the time and she was always so helpful and kept telling me to call her if I had any other questions! I recommend Anna to all my friends and family anytime someone needs legal advice as she is the best attorney I have come across.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Diego, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
