Like most attorneys, I met Susan at a very difficult time in my life. I truly was in fear for my future, but Susan and was so compassionate end extremely professional, every step of the way. Now 7 years later I the future is looking bright. I hired her for all of the steps, from my change status to my naturalization. She is very knowledgeable, she knows what to expect and the different scenarios and outcomes, she is honest and most important she treats you like a person, not a case file, a quality not easy to find anymore.

I was referred to Susan from the San Diego Lawyer referral service. I know lawyers are not cheap, but I have never regretted one second hiring this woman. She has been worth every penny. I had a basic my husband is a foreigner and we needed to adjust his status. But her and her office team knew right away what forms to fill out, documents I would need, etc. It is true what all the other reviews say. She does get back to you very quickly and gets things done in a timely manner. I have read that other immigration lawyers have delayed the process for other people because they take forever to respond to questions or get their paperwork done. Not this office. I have had all sorts of random question about the immigration process and things I can and can not do with my husband and she has been there every step of the way to help us. We are not done yet with the process, but it definitely has given me a peace of mind knowing she'll be there with us through the journey.

I hired the Law Offices Of Jan Joseph Bejar as my immigration attorney for my marriage based adjustment of status. Mr. Bejar assigned my case to Susan Worm, and she immediately earned my wife's and my trust through her knowledge, attention to detail, and personality. As a Certified Specialist in Immigration and Nationality Law, she was able to answer all questions we sent her way regarding the 17 year old law (245(i)), that we would be using to adjust my status. Susan's responsiveness throughout the seven months should also be noted. She answered all questions via e-mail promptly, in detail, and with professionalism. She also provided continued follow-up throughout the process since my case was outside of the "standard processing times" offered by USCIS, though this was not her fault of course. We are extremely thankful to have had Susan as our Attorney. She helped us change my life for the better, and words cannot describe the gratitude felt towards her when I received my Permanent Resident Card. Thank you, Susan. As I said, if you are still deciding on an Attorney, please look no further.

If you are looking to hire an attorney, you shouldn’t just look at the years of experience, or the level of knowledge. You should also find out how much time an attorney devotes to every single case he/she works on. That was the most obvious downside I have encountered with my past attorneys. I got to know Susan from Avvo as I posted a question concerning my relatively complicated immigration case. I received answers from many attorneys but her answer stood out from the crowd as she revealed in depth details on my situation and she also provided the most appropriate solution. I decided to make a phone consultation and as I was listening to her opinion, I was surprised that she is on top of all new things regarding immigration laws that keep changing every now and then, and she pays a great deal of attention to minor details . She even put herself in my shoes and suggested another solution that would take the case out of her scope of practice. That solution was not feasible to me, but it made me trust her even more! All her opinions were told in an honest, humble, and highly professional manner. I decided to hire her, and I have never regretted this decision. After my experiences with my past attorneys, I decided to be very careful with my decisions, skeptic about any information I receive, and apprehensive for how they follow through the steps of the process. However, as Susan started working on my case I realized the difference. Over a year and a half, there were literally hundreds of emails between us. She never failed to respond to any of my requests. All my questions were answered promptly and satisfactorily. I even discovered that, on several occasions, she followed up on my case periodically, without showing off her efforts or telling me. She was paying attention to my case as if it was the only case she had… Of course it wasn’t! She worked diligently to save me time and let me go back to my family and my job in the shortest time possible. One time she left her office during working hours and went to FedEx office to file my documents in order to save me 24 hours of delay! I don’t think I can recall every situation when Susan proved her outstanding service. Therefore I will just conclude saying “Above and beyond!” Holding my visa at hand after being stuck in this process for over 5 years, and seeing how my previous attorneys handled my case, I feel that I was, finally, lucky to meet Susan, and I will always recommend her to everyone in the immigration process.

My wife of 25 years filed a restraining order against me. I am in my seventies, a retired surgeon, and have never had this kind of legal issue. Ms. Keegan did not start by evaluating my ability to pay but instead listened, clearly comprehended my situation, and agreed to take my case. She is a Jurist with the added outstanding qualities of organization, problem-solving, laser focus, attention, and retention of details, and she responds and adapts to changing circumstances with composure. Her patience elevates her to the highest levels of professionalism, coupled with her analysis, writing, and persuasion skills, will give you great comfort that you are represented by the best.

I was referred to Anna by a friend. I needed some legal forms written up and gone over with me. I was also in somewhat of a hurry. Anna was very thorough in explaining everything to me and she was extremely hardworking. She had the forms ready for me in half the time the other attorneys said it would take. She was also very knowledgable in the matter at hand which made me feel safe and protected. I am very thankful for Anna and if you need legal help she is the best.

I needed a few things taken care of legally and I really didn't know where to start. Anna was so knowledgable about exactly what I needed to do and how she could help me. I was calling her with questions all the time and she was always so helpful and kept telling me to call her if I had any other questions! I recommend Anna to all my friends and family anytime someone needs legal advice as she is the best attorney I have come across.

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Diego, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
