Attorney Sondra Sutherland is my kids' hero. She knows how to handle difficult cases, especially cases that involve military retirement division. Military retirement division is complex, and not many attorneys in San Diego, know about how to navigate the rules and regulations regarding military retirement division. If you are looking for someone who knows about military retirement division laws, please give Sondra a call. She will fight for you! I was facing an extremely difficult military divorce case. The order I had included a wrong division of military pension, it also directed me to vacate my home, and put my home up for sale all within a very short period of time. I was also facing losing my share of the military pension, and I was especially facing trying to find a new home for me and my children, at a time when housing cost has skyrocketed in San Diego. The minute I spoke with Sondra she gave me hope. I knew she was a game changer. Attorney Sondra Sutherland was able to save and keep my children in our home. Sondra did a fantastic job on appeal, and guided me through the whole process. Sondra gets results, no doubt about it. The minute Sondra accepted to appeal my case, the other party offered to settle. I am blessed and grateful to have met Attorney Sondra Sutherland after dealing with so many other attorneys, and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on this case. Sondra fought for me and my children, she was understanding, and she especially went above and beyond with her research. One more thing that I loved about Sondra was her prompt communication. Sondra COMMUNICATES! So many attorneys do not return email or phone calls which leads to clients being frustrated. With Sondra, I always knew what was happening, and she always emailed me about what she was about to work on next, and what to expect. To add to all this, her ethics are top notch! I was surprise when she gave me her resume on our first meeting! She even sent me back a check from what was left from my escrow account at the end of the case. This, should tell you a lot about Sondra's ethics and her professionalism. Sondra simply works miracles! My kids spent a fantastic holiday in their childhood home, and they don't have to worry about changing schools, losing friends, and losing the place they call home, all thanks to Sondra S Sutherland. Sondra, I will always be forever grateful for the AMAZING work you did for me and my family. Reine G.

Sondra is tenacious, assertive and highly knowledgeable. When I first spoke to her on the phone I knew she was the right attorney for my case. She spent her time explaining all of my options and advising me as to the best course of action with my best interest in mind. She was always responsive to my calls and emails, regardless of what time it was and was diligent in keeping me informed. Sondra treated me as a person, not just another case. I do believe that had I hired anyone other than Sondra, my situation would not have turned out as favorable as it did. I highly recommend Sondra for any type of family law issue.

Sondra was the best lawyer I have ever had the pleasure to work with. My case was very intrigate, she was so prepared at trial even the other attorney who lost was so impressed he complimented her on a job well done. I still talk about that case to others and would highly recommend her to anyone who wants the best in the business.

As a result, I would strongly recommend Sondra to anyone that desires to have exceptional representation when they enter into a legal dispute.

My wife of 25 years filed a restraining order against me. I am in my seventies, a retired surgeon, and have never had this kind of legal issue. Ms. Keegan did not start by evaluating my ability to pay but instead listened, clearly comprehended my situation, and agreed to take my case. She is a Jurist with the added outstanding qualities of organization, problem-solving, laser focus, attention, and retention of details, and she responds and adapts to changing circumstances with composure. Her patience elevates her to the highest levels of professionalism, coupled with her analysis, writing, and persuasion skills, will give you great comfort that you are represented by the best.

I was referred to Anna by a friend. I needed some legal forms written up and gone over with me. I was also in somewhat of a hurry. Anna was very thorough in explaining everything to me and she was extremely hardworking. She had the forms ready for me in half the time the other attorneys said it would take. She was also very knowledgable in the matter at hand which made me feel safe and protected. I am very thankful for Anna and if you need legal help she is the best.

I needed a few things taken care of legally and I really didn't know where to start. Anna was so knowledgable about exactly what I needed to do and how she could help me. I was calling her with questions all the time and she was always so helpful and kept telling me to call her if I had any other questions! I recommend Anna to all my friends and family anytime someone needs legal advice as she is the best attorney I have come across.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Diego, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
