Ross has helped me with my Estate Plan and provided legal advice on many subjects. He is prepared, efficient, easy to talk to, and explains things in a way that non-legal people can understand. Unlike most lawyers, he does not ‘tell you what you want to hear’ – he makes sure that you know the truth about your case and what the chances are of winning it.

Ross Veta is sincere, smart, and sophisticated. He provided ongoing support through a very emotionally, intense legal situation and was always available to answer questions and help me understand the proceedings and expectations. I highly recommend Ross Veta.

Back in 2016 I was left in a quandary; without prior knowledge, my wife left me unilaterally and unexpectedly, and ran off with our 2 year old son. She charged me with Domestic Violence, and filed a Restraining Order against me, with a court appearance that was scheduled 2 days after I was served. It was timed so it coincided with another (older) son’s graduation from Marine Corps boot camp (that I attended, which meant I had to live under a TRO and wait a month for the formal hearing with a judge). Her lawyer was a prominent divorce attorney in the Mission Valley area, so I was quite concerned about defending myself against him and the bogus and spurious charges levied against me. I had to act quickly, so I entered my name into a link on the internet while looking for an attorney to represent me, and voila, I received a call from Ross Veta almost immediately. I was skeptical at first, but after an initial consultation, it was clear he was the right person for the task at hand due to his ‘calming effect’ on the situation I was facing. Ross and I worked together like a team, which is what people really need to do if they intend on prevailing in their case. My estranged wife’s declaration was not only full of lies, distortions, and half-truths, but errors, including the wrong date we were married, with many other absurd allegations that Ross knew how to handle. I don’t know if these errors were hers, or from her attorney, but her declaration was poorly written, and her attorney should have ensured that these absurd allegations were not part of her declaration; they clearly made her out to be foolish and petty. Ross took full advantage of the opposing party’s weak case against me, and focused on those things that truly mattered to the judge. Divorce is an extremely emotional experience, as it was with me, since my estranged wife tried to drag me through the mud, and I was unable to have contact with our young son. I was a great husband to this woman, and supportive through one miscarriage she had, and then the birth of our beautiful son. Ross Veta saw right through everything, and came up with a game plan to deal with each allegation. Needless to say, Ross Veta kept the focus on putting emotions aside and getting through this most difficult time of my life. Ross has a demeanor that can’t be matched and is a very likable person, something that’s rare in the legal profession. If you’re faced with divorce or any legal issue, you can’t go wrong with Ross Veta. The outcome? After 2 days of testimony, including two of my adult children appearing before the judge as witnesses, and before Ross Veta could cross-examine my estranged wife; the judge stopped the proceedings and denied the Restraining Order. He also ordered that I get visitation with my son, who I hadn’t seen in a little over a month, the very next day. After appearing at FCS, I was awarded joint custody and 50 percent visitation. The real kicker was Ross Veta even managed to get my attorney fees reimbursed from the DV case!! Without any hesitation, I also retained Ross Veta to represent me in the subsequent divorce case I filed (as the petitioner), while my estranged wife retained another prominent attorney in the Del Mar area, yet this went as smoothly as it could be. Thanks again for everything Ross!

My wife of 25 years filed a restraining order against me. I am in my seventies, a retired surgeon, and have never had this kind of legal issue. Ms. Keegan did not start by evaluating my ability to pay but instead listened, clearly comprehended my situation, and agreed to take my case. She is a Jurist with the added outstanding qualities of organization, problem-solving, laser focus, attention, and retention of details, and she responds and adapts to changing circumstances with composure. Her patience elevates her to the highest levels of professionalism, coupled with her analysis, writing, and persuasion skills, will give you great comfort that you are represented by the best.

I was referred to Anna by a friend. I needed some legal forms written up and gone over with me. I was also in somewhat of a hurry. Anna was very thorough in explaining everything to me and she was extremely hardworking. She had the forms ready for me in half the time the other attorneys said it would take. She was also very knowledgable in the matter at hand which made me feel safe and protected. I am very thankful for Anna and if you need legal help she is the best.

I needed a few things taken care of legally and I really didn't know where to start. Anna was so knowledgable about exactly what I needed to do and how she could help me. I was calling her with questions all the time and she was always so helpful and kept telling me to call her if I had any other questions! I recommend Anna to all my friends and family anytime someone needs legal advice as she is the best attorney I have come across.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Diego, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
