As the GC of a large organization with complex legal issues, I’ve hired dozens of lawyers for all kinds of cases, big and small. When the stakes are high, you want someone like Becca. We first hired Becca to replace a large national law firm years into a complex lawsuit that presented an existential risk to the company. Within a short time, Becca produced a strategy and avenues for success that the entire team of lawyers we had employed for years never presented. The result was that the case was settled with terms favorable to our company and the end of the lawsuit that had hung over our head for a long time. As a former litigator with a great deal of experience in the courtrooms of this state, I can tell you that Becca is on a different level than just about anyone you encounter. She also happens to be a wonderful person. I would recommend her unreservedly.

After initially speaking with Rebecca, it was clear she cares about the work she does and the people she serves; Rebecca understood the emotional sensitivity attached to our case and worked with us with cognizance. I am so grateful to have met an attorney so intentional about helping those who the system and many institutions fail, as such, Rebecca is incredible in that she makes time for those who need it. With her level of extensive experience and a high level of caring for the people and work she does, you cannot go wrong with choosing Rebecca. I highly recommend Rebecca Coll for all your litigation needs-- I am beyond honored to have met her!

Rebecca Coll is an excellent lawyer. She is extremely professional and passionate. Mostly importantly, she deeply cares for her clients. Rebecca and her partner Jim guided me throughout my case and provided critical guidance and support. I could've never resolved my case as smoothly as I did without their service. I highly recommend Rebecca to anyone looking for legal help.

I had the pleasure of working directly with Rebecca since 2017. Since then, Rebecca and her partner James Quadra became two of the attorneys I trust the most, especially when it comes to litigations. Around 2017, my company was having a shareholder dispute that later escalated to a full lawsuit. My previous attorneys that I hired before meeting Rebecca were not able to resolve the case and only seemed to have escalated the lawsuit. After the case going no-where for several months, I luckily stumbled upon Rebecca and James Quadra. Rebecca took the time to listen to my case, gave me great advice on how to best proceed, and worked diligently to defend the company and our point of view. She's also a phenomenal writer, which is an extremely important skill set for attorneys, as a lot of opinions/arguments are presented to the other side/judges over writing. Unlike my previous attorneys that I worked with, Rebecca was not only a better writer but also a lot more efficient with the entire process, where she would complete work 2-3 faster than the previous attorneys I've worked with, and also knew how to be aggressive toward the other side when needed. I also felt like she really genuinely cared about me as a person and was really seeking out the best interest of myself and the company. I can go on and add why working with Rebecca was amazing! Overall, because I met Rebecca and James, we were able to resolve the lawsuit successfully and achieve a great outcome for myself and the company. What the other attorneys could not resolve in a few years, Rebecca and James resolved in a matter of months. In a lot of ways, I feel like I found lifelong attorneys that I can completely trust, especially when it comes to litigation. If I could rate them on a scale of 1-5, they truly get a 10!

As a scrappy startup, working with David from the early days of our business, we were able to secure multiple deals with major publishing and entertainment entities in Japan which were not only critical contributors to our success but also withstood the rigors of 2 exits. David's solid knowledge of the entertainment industry combined with his Japanese language ability and expertise in dealings with Japan were perfect to support our business.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Francisco, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
