David provided phenomenal services throughout my custody proceedings. David was available, present, and responsive with every interaction. He kept me grounded and outlined possible outcomes to manage my expectations. David provided a plan and a path for navigating the court system, gathering valuable information, and preparation for hearings. He was cost-conscious during the entire process, understood and explained the legal process, and was sympathetic to the highly sensitive family issues we were experiencing. I highly recommend David and would certainly retain his services for any future needs!

Throughout my career in real estate and construction I have worked with numerous attorneys in business and with one other divorce attorney. As the executive that managed the lawsuits for my employers I have been in court for lawsuits and claims, and continuously worked with attorneys on contractual and personnel matters. I can say without reservation that David is one of the best lawyers with whom I have ever worked. So what makes David such a great attorney? First, most attorneys will tell you “what the Judge is going to say” (as if they are the judge). I learned early in my business career that attorneys have NO IDEA what the judge is going to say. David, while providing an opinion, did not pretend to know what the judge (or my ex-wife) was going to say and professionally presented my approach with the attitude of “try and let us see what happens,” which for me, had a good outcome. Secondly, David was able to polish and present my thoughts and writings into a understandable and professional document (with less emotion). This was very instrumental in obtaining a good outcome. My previous divorce attorney was incapable of doing this. Lastly, but not least, David is very efficient and considerate of billing and as a result his fees were reasonable for the service, which is always appreciated. Before engaging David, I talked with quite a few attorneys in the Bay Area and I am happy with my decision, grateful to David for his help, and he is the ONLY divorce attorney I would recommend in the Bay Area.

David is beyond amazing!! David's calm demeanor, prompt, straight-forward – no nonsense approach, intelligent, honest, and /experienced family law attorney does a wonderful job balancing delicate family needs and legal necessities. My complex case stalled for 1.5 years until I found David. He managed to resurrect my case and coached us through a settlement, avoiding Court with positive results in the best interest of my family; an impressive settlement that I didn't see coming. Divorce is a challenging time and David is poise and always prompt to navigate the changing tides seamlessly. When I received my final judgement, he reminded me to update my beneficiaries and ensure all loose ends were buttoned up. I have the utmost trust and confidence in David, and HIGHLY recommend David.

Clearly the reason to visit a divorce attorney is daunting, however working with David from the very beginning kept me realistic, and grounded. His matter of fact approach and the clarity of how facts, evidence, and truth comes out and prevails, in one way, shape or form, was a blessing. I already had a strategy in mind prior to being introduced to David, and he understood my needs, was empathetic to my plight, and even a couple of times asked me to do brave things that at the time was frustrating but had to happen, and now it all makes sense. You can't see things when you're in the mud, and working with David gave me a sense of balance to work my full time job and still raise my children single handedly. Work nor life suffered, and I am glad David was responsive, supportive, professional, and never left me wondering if my questions were answered properly. I would highly recommend him for anyone going through a sticky time. If he could help me after 32 years of marriage and 4 kids later, I am confident this is the man you'd want to advocate for you. Didn't end up in trial, started and finished in less than one year, and walked away with what meant most! A very decent experience.

Hands down the best Estate Planning Attorney in Bay Area. Hanlen is very knowledgeable and caring. I used him originally in 2017 to assist with my parents estate planning. Over the years and even recently I have had to consult with him and he guided me through whatever I needed. If you need documents updated he easily takes care of it and I appreciate his thoroughness. I have never regretted the money I spent for his service. He has made my life and that of my parents and generations to come much easier.

As a scrappy startup, working with David from the early days of our business, we were able to secure multiple deals with major publishing and entertainment entities in Japan which were not only critical contributors to our success but also withstood the rigors of 2 exits. David's solid knowledge of the entertainment industry combined with his Japanese language ability and expertise in dealings with Japan were perfect to support our business.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Francisco, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
