I have been fortunate to have Oliver Vallejo represent me for over a year. What I like about Oliver is that he explains everything to you very thoroughly and wants to make sure you are aware of what is happening. He was in constant communication with me. He does not sugar coat things which I appreciated and he does not make promises about potential outcomes. Oliver gave me advice on a specific matter and I’m glad I took his advice. I’m very impressed with Oliver and would choose him to be my lawyer any day.

A simple day at work turned into a painful accident for my father. Oliver helped us deal with the insurance company and reach a reasonable settlement. He was very helpful and took his time to explain the whole process to us in great detail. Oliver was also very patient and always prompt to answer the many questions my father had.

There is always a silver lining. I was recently in a car accident that left a lot of scars - both emotional and physical. I was very lucky to get Oliver Vallejo to represent me at such a difficult time. Oliver was extremely thorough and qualified every last detail to ensure he could be successful in helping me. Oliver leaves no stone unturned and is a very effective communicator. At a time when you are most vulnerable you need to work with someone you trust and someone who is exceptional at their job – and that is Oliver. Oliver taught me a lot in the process as he knows the business very well. There were no surprises in my case as Oliver set the right expectations all along the way. In the end, we were very successful and it was because Oliver made sure he could help me in the very beginning and then continued to communicate and help me all the way through to the end.

I was injured in a debilitating accident resulting in the amputation of my right leg. Being injured in a life altering accident brings many changes and challenges for one to overcome. The everyday stresses of life are amplified, dealing with pain, aggression, depression and the thoughts of what your future may be. Unfortunately, in our imperfect world there isn’t always a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. There isn’t always a happy ending or a silver lining and justice does not always prevail. When dealing with all that comes with being severely injured in an accident it helps to know that you have an empathetic, enthusiastic, compassionate and highly skilled attorney on your side to insure that your future even though it may not be as you imagined it, is still a bright one. Oliver and his associates provide excellent service with fantastic results. They made this tragic experience and difficult transition into a new life much smoother. Knowing that Oliver and his associates were on my side left me to manage the things I could control and allowed me not to worry about the things I could not. They handled themselves selves with the upmost professionalism and left me feeling confident and at ease with the litigation process. In the end Oliver’s dedicated hard work paid off not only in a substantial monetary gain, but also in helping me get my life back and for that I will be forever grateful.

As a scrappy startup, working with David from the early days of our business, we were able to secure multiple deals with major publishing and entertainment entities in Japan which were not only critical contributors to our success but also withstood the rigors of 2 exits. David's solid knowledge of the entertainment industry combined with his Japanese language ability and expertise in dealings with Japan were perfect to support our business.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Francisco, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
