I needed to consult with an attorney regarding a situation I was having with my work: I was returning to work after having been on disability leave for about five months. I was very concerned about my company’s inquiries and documentation requirements for my return to work because I had good reason to believe they were infringing on my right to privacy of my Protected Health Information as a currently disabled person and also that they were discriminating against me. It was so incredibly hard to find an attorney who was willing to take my case and consult with me. I called around for many hours with zero luck. And then I found Richard!! He was willing to help me and I was so relieved to finally have found someone who will be on my side. He had excellent suggestions and advice, and reminded me of the privacy and confidentiality I have with him via attorney-client privilege. I felt safe discussing very sensitive matters with him and he really went above and beyond in helping me. It was obvious to me that he is very knowledgeable about employment law. He presented multiple scenarios to me of how my situation might play out and that is why I felt more than prepared when I had to speak with HR again. I am happy to say I am back at work now with all HR and privacy matters having been resolved. If I ever need legal advice on a future employment situation, I know I will be calling Richard again. He was also always prompt at responding to my emails, which was great, because I had certain deadlines to make in regards to my return to work. I cannot thank you enough, Richard.

I got connected to Rich through one of his attorney relationships, and I am so glad I did! I am also an attorney with general knowledge of employment law, and Rich quickly earned my confidence and respect. Rich is both experienced and compassionate - I always felt my stress reduce after we chatted - and he kept me on track/focused on the end goal. With Rich's counsel, I got the exact result I wanted in every sense of the word: I am receiving ALL payments (without even having to provide standard additional documentation) while keeping relationships intact. He skillfully reined me in when I was irritated, which I believe was critical to achieving these results. Rich was exceptionally generous with his time. He knew I didn't want to litigate - my case did not have the potential to involve much money for him - yet he frequently gave me additional time when he did not have to. It is clear to me that Rich genuinely cares about his clients. Highly, highly recommended!!

I still cannot believe my luck to have found Attorney Vaznaugh… I met him due to the sexual harassment and retaliatory firing I suffered from a certain company. Since my case was more unusual than a straightforward situation, I wouldn’t have never hopped to find such powerful and devoted legal representation. Not only did Mr. Vaznaugh believed me, he also fought for me to get justice for almost three years!… On top of his very considerate and heartfelt support, he got me a settlement considerably bigger than I ever dreamed of. I highly recommend him to anyone because he doesn’t stop until justice is done!!!…

I feel I am so lucky to have Dr.Vaznaugh as my lawyer. He offered me the first consultation for free and provided me very timely response in every follow-ups. He is very experienced in California Employment law, and very supportive in my case, for every single question/concern I raised, he always offered me accurate answers and functioned as my backbone. Though I was in hourly consultation, he cared about my severance package and helped negotiate the payment, which increased the total payment by ~50%. Truly THANKS to him and in my case, I also learned a lot from him.

As a scrappy startup, working with David from the early days of our business, we were able to secure multiple deals with major publishing and entertainment entities in Japan which were not only critical contributors to our success but also withstood the rigors of 2 exits. David's solid knowledge of the entertainment industry combined with his Japanese language ability and expertise in dealings with Japan were perfect to support our business.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Francisco, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
