I had the opportunity to work with Don for my H-1B visa and Green Card application. I have worked and consulted with several other business immigration attorneys and I have to say that Don's knowledge and client service standout. He is very thorough and extremely diligent. He offers personalized services that you don't get when you work with some other firms. I would highly recommend him to anyone in my network that needs an immigration attorney.

I had the privilege of working with Mr. Don Pangilinan several years ago when I needed assistance with H1B sponsorship for a job opportunity. My positive experience led us to pursuing his services again for our marriage based Green Card application in the last year. Over this time frame, I faced numerous personal challenges including the recent pandemic which further delayed an already complex immigration process. Mr. Pangilinan was simply brilliant in his expertise and judgment in navigating that process. Mr. Pangilinan's deep understanding of immigration related matters coupled with his remarkable problem-solving ability helped us overcome a number of hurdles on the path to permanent residency. His foresight in anticipating potential problems/scenarios and his ability to mitigate them always made us feel as though we were in safe hands under his guidance. His professionalism was evident in his prompt responses to all our queries by phone/email - including during a weekend! Moreover, his calm, unassuming and respectful demeanor always made us feel comfortable in our interactions with him. I recommend Mr. Pangilinan without hesitation to anyone seeking immigration advice or legal support.

I want to personally attest to Don and his team for their superb professional guidance and execution from initial consultation all the way through successful issuance of an IRl Visa for my wife -- and now green card -- official permission that allows her to be a lawful permanent resident of the United States of America, with work and travel authorizations. This is a day I could only have dreamt of just a short time ago. Don has been a true partner in this journey that began two years ago, a steadfast optimist in advocating for a clear approach to immigration. I have many people to thank for the gift of having my wife join me in the US and to becoming a family in my home country. Additionally, we now have a baby as well, a little miracle that became part of our story. Of all the people I have to thank for their support in this journey, Don rises above them all. He has conveyed a sense of dedication and urgency at each stage and always met my wife and me where we were, with a reassuring path forward. He conducted calls to accommodate time zones and was always responsive. This journey for my wife and I wasn't always easy and we felt the distance across the ocean and the hardship of being apart, as we dreamed one day of being together. We did not give up, but we pushed on. Don was steadfast as well. If not for Don's good judgement and counsel at many stages, I do not know what outcome we might have had. I trusted in my work with Don and most importantly, I trusted him. Immigration to the US, and international law is nuanced and Don helped us understand it, and helped us achieve the best possible outcome which was by no means a foregone conclusion. He has now helped give my family and me a chance at a life together here in the US that we may never have had. I am, and will be, forever grateful. I highly recommend Don and his team.

When I first met with Don I was in a very challenging situation, facing a complex transition from an H1B visa to a greencard and—like most of the immigrants in this situation—not really aware of the legal demands that this process could bring in the future. Now, after a few years, I just received my US passport. Unnecessary here to digress about the personal relief that this brought to me and to my family, but it’s very important to emphasize that this wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for the professional support we had from Don L. Pangilinan and all the Philip Levin & Associates Law Firm. But it wasn’t only the legal process that was in stake there. There ’s a whole reality involving principally our goals as a family, our careers, and the consequences our decisions will bring to our future. And I can’t put into words the importance of the guidance we—myself and my wife—received from Don and his team. This is something that is unmeasurable and doesn’t come with a degree, it comes from talent, experience, professional knowledge and an enormous dose of human empathy.

I can't say enough good things to say about my business immigration attorney Don Pangilinan. I worked with Don for 9 years. He helped me get my first H1B Visa with my initial position here in California. Since then I have continued to come to Don each time I changed jobs and eventually applying and obtaining my green card. Don has been instrumental throughout my entire process. He is patient, detail oriented and a pleasure to work with. He always explained all my options and made sure I understood the potential outcome of each decision. I would highly recommend working with Don on for any business immigration needs. I will be back when I'm ready to apply for citizenship. I wouldn't trust anyone else. Don... see you in 5 years:)

As a scrappy startup, working with David from the early days of our business, we were able to secure multiple deals with major publishing and entertainment entities in Japan which were not only critical contributors to our success but also withstood the rigors of 2 exits. David's solid knowledge of the entertainment industry combined with his Japanese language ability and expertise in dealings with Japan were perfect to support our business.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Francisco, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
