I knew of Mr. Sherman's excellent reputation in helping businesses in financially significant legal matters, so took a chance to ask his assistance with a personal situation which, though with fewer dollars at stake, was also important to me in terms of good neighborhood relations. I was impressed with how quickly he responded, how well he listened to me and immediately grasped both the legal and interpersonal issues, and though obviously busy with more "major" cases quickly took action on my behalf in a most assertive yet professional manner. In this instance presenting his thorough analysis of relevant case law dissuaded the other party from their intent to engage in costly litigation, and won for me a better resolution than I could have imagined in terms of my financial goals and, due to his style of engagement, unexpected respect and good will from the opposing party. He's sharp as a tack, dogged in pursuit of his client's interests, and a warm and compassionate human being.

I recommend Kelly Armstrong and her team at The Armstrong Law Firm for excellent representation. They explained all the laws to me for my legal claims and let me know what my rights were. Kelly made sure I knew the pros and cons and helped me understand my options and next steps. She fought very hard for me and helped me a lot. Now I have closure and can move on with my life in a positive way.

I hired Kelly Armstrong to help me with a sexual harassment case and she quickly focused herself and her strong legal team on my case to help me. She explained the process to me so I understood what was happening at each stage and championed my case. I am so appreciative and grateful and recommend Kelly and her firm.

I came in for advice and ultimately a business divorce. I was a minority shareholder of a boba tea franchisor. The majority shareholders refused to disclose any financial information to me at all. They had no intention to and told me I did not need to know any of it. The majority shareholders asked me to sign a document indicating that I had received all important information for a transaction to buy me out, but the company and its founder refused to respond to any request to provide that same information. A letter to the company’s lawyer was also met with silence. The majority shareholders were just blowing me off. That is when I hired Steven, he is extremely easy to work with. Steven is honest and will give you the truth. He gave me the best legal advice. He explained thoroughly all options I had and the possible outcomes of my decisions. He is extremely professional, and he leaves no stones unturned. Long story short, he was able to help me get back my initial investments and a little bit more, as well as all attorney’s fees I had paid. The other party ended up having to pay for my attorney’s fees and costs as part of a judgment against them ordering key corporate information to be provided. The company and its founder ended up with liens against them. Steven’s work is beyond worth it with his experience, expertise and attention to details. I am extremely happy that I had the opportunity to have worked with Steven. I still email him all my future business deals to be reviewed before moving forward. I can’t stress how wonderful working with Steven and the quality of work he produces is. I hope he doesn’t ever retire!

We had a great experience with Sherman Business Law. We (a group of LPs) needed to renegotiate our incorporation documents, and Steve provided prompt feedback on terms we needed to address, was helpful in framing negotiation tactics, and patiently walked us through terms that we needed to understand. He was also able to keep within a tight timeline, which opposing counsel struggled with. I'm happy to say that we got our most important contractual concerns accepted and Steve helped us focus our time and budget on the most important issues. Overall it was a great experience and I wouldn't hesitate to work with Sherman Business Law again.

As a scrappy startup, working with David from the early days of our business, we were able to secure multiple deals with major publishing and entertainment entities in Japan which were not only critical contributors to our success but also withstood the rigors of 2 exits. David's solid knowledge of the entertainment industry combined with his Japanese language ability and expertise in dealings with Japan were perfect to support our business.

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Francisco, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
