I worked with Andrew on a case for a good 18 months. After working with him for extended period of time, I have a very clear idea about Andrew and here is a summary of what I found: 1) Extremely strong lawyer: his work including is simply unbelievable; to say the least. He is very knowledgably about everything has to do with law and legal matters. He never failed to impress me every time he drafts some paperwork and never failed to impress me on phone calls. The advice you get from Andrew are extremely valuable. 2) Very honest person: Andrew’s is extremely honest and he never ever tried to do work (like many other lawyers) that has little value to me even though he could benefit from it. He was always putting my interests before his interests, and this happened in dozens of scenarios. 3) Unbelievable writing skills: it is well-known that lawyers’ writings and choice of words are excellent, but Andrew is at a different level. I was employed for many companies in the last 10 years and I worked with many lawyers on various contracts. Andrew is way better than anyone I worked with by a massive margin. 4) Hardworking: he is always available, and always respond within a very short period of time. He replies to emails after hours, and even after midnight. 5) Very nice person: I met Andrew couple of times in person and I had a great time with him. This is a person you would live to spend time with, and you would definitely like to work with him on anything. 6) Very smart: he is very intelligent, and has a wide understanding of modern technologies. I have met lawyers that you need to explain to them terms from my industry. In Andrew’s case, he was so aware of our industry thoroughly and we did not need to spend time to educate him on anything. Furthermore, he has deep analytical skills that came handy in many situations. It is critical to work with a highly intelligent lawyer, and Andrew has that in him. It would have been so counterproductive to spend time explaining every detail to him, he knew everything.
I highly recommend working with Andrew, he is unbelievable lawyer. I think I was very lucky to work with him, and I recommend anyone to hire Andrew. He has it all given my experience.

My company, a Fortune 200 biotech company, hired Andrew not only for his specialized expertise in both patent litigation and patent procurement, but also for his advanced technical knowledge. After retaining him, Andrew quickly and thoroughly grasped our complex technology that combined life sciences, engineering, and material sciences. He then analyzed multiple competitor patents and evaluated their potential impact on this technology. We were pleased when Andrew provided us with clear, detailed, and useful opinions on these patents, thus providing guidance for our future research and business efforts. Importantly, Andrew delivered these opinions within a tight budget and time-frame, all without compromising quality. As in-house counsel, I was Andrew’s primary client for this matter. I believe Andrew’s experience, skill, and knowledge, both in the technical and legal domains, were critical in delivering this high quality of work product. Moreover, Andrew was able to work seamlessly with members of the legal team at various levels, as well as with the responsible business executive. Our team was very impressed with Andrew’s work, and I would unequivocally recommend Andrew to others for all manner of patent-related work.

I worked with Andrew on patent litigation defending several large well-known companies. I found Andrew’s work to be efficient and effective. Plus, he is a pleasure to work with. Now, I am in-house intellectual property counsel. I have recommended that we hire Andrew for at least one litigation matter and would not hesitate to recommend him to my company or other companies looking to hire an intellectual property litigator.

When I was in house as head of the legal department, Andrew defended a multi-party patent litigation and got a defense judgment in our favor and an award of attorney’s fees. The award was upheld on appeal. While the plaintiff claimed not to be able to pay the award of attorneys’ fees, Andrew’s persistence resulted in a significant payment. Andrew is very knowledgeable, pragmatic and cost effective. I have had occasion since that case to work with him on other matters and haven’t hesitated in referring other business colleagues and attorneys to him.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Jose, California?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
